Welcome

to the August issue of the

Sprotbrough Arrow Hot hot hot! I hope everyone coped with our heatwave in July. A sunny day improves the mood of us all, but sweltering temperatures like the ones reached in July made it difficult for many of us (Animal friends included) to function normally. We have been told to expect more summers like this, a further effect of climate change. The Arrow went to print earlier than usual due to the holiday period and I had just found out the news that Doncaster Sheffield Airport has started a 6 week consultation to review its future. The closure of our airport would have a detrimental effect on Doncaster City and I plead with you to do all you can to support our Airport. Lobby your MP, sign petitions and keep up to date with what’s happening. The airport is something we are proud of and part of our landscape, heritage and history, please help to save our Airport. The September issue deadline is Wednesday 17th August. The Arrow will be delivered before 1st September. Best wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk arrowpublications.co.uk

Community News SCARECROW FESTIVAL Hay, hay! Just a reminder that this year’s annual Sprotbrough scarecrow fes val is being held on 3rd and 4th September. If you want to make a scarecrow that’s ‘outstanding in its field’ you need to get your completed entry forms and fee to one of the drop off points by 10th August in order to be included on the map and be judged.

Queens Jubilee June 5th was not the best day as far as the weather was concerned all our plans for an outdoor celebra on went awry but the plan B was well executed and what a fabulous day we had! 500 cups of coffee, 110 hog roast baps, a combined choir of 50 from Orchard Infant and Copley Junior and Laar Music's Daylight Singers, 200 guests, and a fair few brollies! Not to men on more cake than your local Cooplands! There were indoor cra s and body art for the children and despite the weather room to run around. Thank you to everyone who made it possible including Chris ans Together the Sprotbrough Scouts and everyone else who played a role! A Time Capsule which includes items created or given by local schools, The Music Society, Don Gorge, Women’s Ins tute, Mothers’ Union, churches and other community groups has been put together. This will be planted in the grounds of St Mary’s church at 3pm on Saturday September 3rd (This is the weekend of the Scarecrow fes val September 3rd and 4th, have you got your entry planned?) The place where the me capsule is planted will be marked with a plaque indica ng it should be opened in another 70 years – so 2092, here we come!

www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk/animals-for-adoption Here at the RSPCA Doncaster and Rotherham Branch, we care for over 1000 animals per year ranging from dogs, cats, puppies and kittens to birds, wildlife and rabbits. We aim to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home every animal that we care for. That being said, some animals are in our care longer than others. Below you will find our current long-stay residents, all of whom are ready and waiting for their forever families. Casper is our current longest-stay rabbit resident, he has been in our care for 7 months now, after being found as a stray with suspected fight wounds. He is now ready to find his forever home and has been waiting patiently for the right family to come along. Could you be the right person for Casper? Our longest-stay feline residents are Desmond and Reginald; this playful pair, are on the lookout for their new home together. Desmond is sweet-natured but is a little timid at times. However, his confident pal Reginald brings him out to be his true self, and they conquer the world together. The pair can live with children aged 5 + and with other cats. They may also be able to live with cat-friendly dogs if introduced slowly. Trixie is our current longest-stay canine. She's a tremendous girl who came into our care through no fault of her own and is now looking for a forever adult-only home with no other pets. She is looking for a family who can give her all the time she needs to form a bond with them and someone who understands her. Trixie enjoys all the attention for herself and enjoys going on quiet walks. She would benefit from several meet and greets before adoption day. Whether you are on the lookout for a dynamic duo or a sole companion, we have a wide variety of animals currently available for adoption – from dogs and cats to rabbits and guinea pigs. When one of our animals becomes available for adoption, they are posted on our website and Facebook page. If you are interested in adopting an animal, please follow the process that is explained on our website. There are many ways to help RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch with our mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, donating cash or goods, leaving a legacy, and sponsoring through our Safe Haven programme and attending events. We have charity shops at Bawtry, Rossington and Thorne, as well as eBay and Depop. At the Animal Centre, we rehabilitate and re-home the animals in our care and have a pet supplies store on site for all your requirements.

On Tuesday 21st June all the children at Orchard enjoyed taking part in our annual sports day. In the morning, we held year group curling compe ons and then children had fun doing outdoor races in the a ernoon. There was the classic running race, the infamous egg and spoon race and the tradi onal ‘potato’ race which actually involved collec ng bean bags! Whilst it was a warm and sunny day children kept cool and hydrated in the shade whilst wai ng for their turn and did a great job of cheering each other on. We were very proud of the children’s enthusiasm and very appreciated the support of the many parents and accompanying family members/friends that turned out to support on the day. Go Orchard!

Following sports day, some of our Year 2 children took part in the local ‘Sing Out’ event at The Dome. Children had spent the past few weeks learning new songs and accompanying dance rou nes which they then performed with other local schools in front of a live audience. We were so impressed with the children’s commitment and eagerness to share their musical talents and the rapturous applause on the night said it all! We would like to thank the Doncaster Music Educa on Hub for organising and pu ng on this massed singing event which has been unable to go ahead for the past couple of years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We would also like to thank the team working at The Point for their support and liaison in the run up to the event and say a big ‘well done’ to all the Doncaster schools that took part. During the past week all children have been eager to find out about their new classes ready for September when they will move up to the next year group. They have enjoyed a couple of ‘class swaps’ to aid this transi on where teachers have warmly welcomed their new class members. Year 2 children are also very much looking forward to their first transi on visits up to Copley Junior School during the last few weeks of term and we know that they will work hard to impress their new teachers! Children in Nursery enjoyed sharing their end of year gradua on on Tuesday 5th July and impressed their parents/family members by singing some of their favourite before posing for end of year photographs. Recep on, Year 1 and Year 2 children will be performing their end of year celebra ons during the last couple of weeks of term, and we expect a few tears as our Year 2 children prepare to say goodbye. To ensure they have a memorable end of term we have planned a fun day out at Gulliver’s Valley Theme Park where the children will no doubt enjoy tes ng the adult’s braveness on many of the a rac ons there! Look out Gulliver’s Valley, here we come! As we sign off for the summer, we would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our children a very happy summer holiday and say thank you for their hard work and enthusiasm for learning during the last academic year. In par cular, we would like to thank our Year 2 children and wish them ongoing success as they move to new schools in September. Finally, a MASSIVE thank you to all the parents/carers and school staff at Orchard for their ongoing support and hard work. We really do appreciate each and every one of you!

RICHMOND HILL PRIMARY ACADEMY

What fantas c sports days we had at Richmond Hill - from 9am to 3pm over two days, we welcomed families and friends to watch Nursery, Recep on, Y1,Y2,Y3,Y4,Y5 & Y6 take to the field. All children ran in every race and the sun shone for the occasion. A big ‘Thankyou’ to Mr Burke and Mrs Scanlon our Sports Leaders, for all the organising of events and also to Richmond staff for all the site organising. Just look at these fantas c murals designed and painted by our fabulous Y1 children as part of their topic art project called Streetview, which is inspired by the ar st James Rizzi. We think they are spectacular and are brightening our corridor walls now.

We are so VERY proud of our fantas c Choir at Richmond Hill, they performed recently at the Doncaster Dome as part of a phenomenal choral celebra on event ‘A brand new day’. Mr and Mrs Mellors our choir leaders, are something special when it comes to developing music in our young people and inspiring their futures as seen at this amazing event.

As part of Na onal Sports Week we enjoyed a week of planned ac vi es and sports all through school. We welcomed visitors and providers from street dance to cricket along with some fabulous team building ac vi es. Our Year 4 children have been involved in an incredible performance of 'The Water Diviner's Tale' with Opera North at the Doncaster Dome. Huge congratula ons to our children, along with all pupils involved who were from our Trust schools. We were so proud of them all taking part in the opera on climate change! Our Year 2 children enjoyed a fabulous Victorian day at Normanby Hall - They couldn’t believe the hard work that went into doing all the laundry but they all had a go and listened really carefully.

Community News Don Gorge Community Group

Following the election of a new management committee, the Don Gorge Community Group volunteers are continuing their invaluable work within the Don Gorge area of Sprotbrough and Warmsworth.

June and July will see the cutting back of vegetation and overhanging tree branches around the Sprotbrough Flash and nearby woodland, to keep the walkways clear and un-obstructed. Working alongside the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, in August, we’ll be clearing back the reeds from the wader bays, thereby allowing the wading birds easier access to the water’s edge. We also have another major clear-out of the canal end of Sprotbrough Lock planned with our volunteer canoeist, Stuart Guy. We’re excited about a new Butterfly Project planned for September. In liaison with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, we’re proposing to clear bramble from a small area off the Trans Pennine Trail and plant wildflowers to encourage the butterflies. A new hedge laying project is proposed along the Trans Pennine Trail for December and our continued battle with the invasive Himalayan Balsam goes on throughout the summer months. Sadly, the on-going problem with litter/fly-tipping in the Don Gorge is never-ending however, the volunteers continue to collect other people’s rubbish and dispose of it responsibly. On that note, we hope you will visit our scarecrow at the boat landing strip, off Nursery Lane during the Sprotbrough Scarecrow Festival on 3rd & 4th September 2022. Follow us on Facebook – Don Gorge Community Group or join us for volunteering on alternate Tuesdays and Thursdays. Doncaster Rambler’s - Old Moor and Wombwell Ings Looking at a map it’s hard to believe we were in the middle of an urban sprawl, housing estates, retail parks, and monster warehouses and yet, we were oblivious. That is the beauty of a Ramblers walk, we take you to the heart of the natural environment. The Old Moor RSPB reserve where we, I say we, seventeen of us set off, is a legacy of the coal mining industry when topsoil was removed and used to cover an adjacent polluted site. The resultant wetlands a ract bi ens, lapwings, redshanks and avocets. We just a ract eager walkers so a er a short briefing by our walk leader Steve, we set off le along the TPT with, since there were so many of us, Tony back marking. The 1.3 mile star ng route afforded excellent views across the wetlands but sadly no wild foul in sight. A er crossing the River Dearne we con nued north just missing the outskirts of Bolton upon Dearne along a track which was heavily ru ed making walking a bit of a balancing act. S ll no bikes here unlike on most of the route, where we were regularly harassed. Luckily we had been pre-warned and most cyclists had bells giving warning for us to jump aside. Soon we picked up another long distance trail Dearne Way / Barnsely Boundary Walk heading northwest, with even be er views of Old Moor, and despite the lack of wildlife, there was plenty of artwork to admire, on the concrete canvass of the A6195 underpass. Making our way towards Wombwell Ings we took a brief refreshment stop by a bird hide, where Herons could be seen flying in the distance. It's surprising what you can come across in suburban Wombwell, but there it was a vintage Chevy, and a er an unhealthily long admire, we took off back southeast along the TPT to the start. Total six miles 2hrs 48min Peter Rowsell Please visit our website h ps://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/ for latest informa on, including future ac vity. Also follow us on Facebook h ps://www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/ for details of past Rambler ou ngs. Remember while out observe the Countryside Code and give way to other walkers.
