We are so lucky to live in villages who really capture the essence of this special time of year with events planned throughout late November and December. From Christmas fayres, lights being switched on, carol singing and so much more, there is a lot to look forward to this Christmas. All dates can be found in this months Arrow.
If you have any special photos from the festive community events you attend over the coming month, please send them to me and I will share them in the January issue.
I would like to dedicate this Christmas issue to the amazing Arrow delivery team who work hard each month, regardless of the weather, to ensure your magazine is delivered on time.
The January issue deadline is Wednesday 7th December The Arrow will be delivered before 1st January.
At just over 20ft tall, it is the biggest and best tree yet, thanks to a generous donation. As Carol Rees, Sprotbrough Christmas Lights co-ordinator said “The tree now stands for a couple of days to let the branches settle and then it will be professionally dressed and include many coloured lights. It will look magnificent for the grand switch-on Saturday 26th November at 5.30pm. We look forward to seeing you all there!’
Sprotbrough’s 2022 Christmas Tree has arrived and is now in place on the green.

Welcome to the latest edition of Sprotbrough Cricket Club’s new Arrow column, bringing you all the news and goings-on of a club at the heart of the community.
Even though we are only just beginning the long road to taking the field again next April, there’s been a lot going off to fill that large corky-sized hole in your life around the club lately. Don’t forget to follow us on our Facebook (Sprotbrough Cricket Club) and Twitter (@CcSprotbrough) pages to keep up to date with everything happening at the club this winter and beyond!
Shall we start this month’s edition with a bang? On 5th November, we hosted our annual Bonfire and Fireworks Extravaganza down on the Ivanhoe field – and once again, it did not disappoint! Our brandnew street food market went down an absolute treat, and we’d like to thank all of the wonderful vendors who helped make this possible! We look forward to hopefully welcoming you back next year! We’d also like to thank our other local suppliers Marr Grange Farm Shop, Clarkson’s Fruit & Veg and Moore’s Bakery for helping us cater the event. It’s always great to be supported in our celebrations by these amazing local companies!
As usual, the fireworks display was nothing short of spectacular! We haven’t seen explosiveness like that on the pitch since the summer, when George Thompson was batting! We’re very grateful to Fuse Fireworks for supplying these excellent fireworks and allowing us to really put on a show for the fantastic people of Sprotbrough! As for the bonfire, that was a sight to behold yet again! Thank you to everyone who kindly donated wood for it; we were quite literally inundated!
Lastly, we’d like to thank everyone in that bumper crowd who came down and reveled in the entertainment, and to all of our volunteers who helped set the event up and cleaned up the following day. Whilst these pictures can only paint a small picture of the magnificent night, we hope it was enjoyed by all! Since we started this event back in the late-2000s, it’s grown far beyond anything we imagined it would and has become a staple village tradition every year. This wouldn’t be possible without your continued support of this event, and we’re excited to make it even better next year. Events like these also allows us to raise vital funds which help maintain the club as both a green space in the heart of the village and an idyllic place for neighbours to come together and make lasting memories. We will always be grateful for your support, especially in the current climate. Fortunately, we have one final event in the diary for 2022 before we let the hallowed Ivanhoe turf rest and preparations for 2023 can begin. On Saturday 3rd December, our annual Christmas Market will take place – which is always great fun for all ages! This year, we have over 20 stalls on offer providing everything you could need to really get you into the Christmas spirit! This includes classic Christmas favourites like wreaths, baubles, advent calendars and stockings, as well as crafted goods, winter warmers, jewelry, home decorations and MUCH MORE! We will also have a Santa’s Grotto, festive tearoom, children’s play and – of course – ALPACAS!
The market will be open between 10.30am and 4.30pm and entry costs just £1. We hope to see you there!
Finally, as we approach the end of another wonderful year here at the club, we’d just like to thank all of our players, coaches, staff and supporters for another wonderful year on and off the pitch. As we say, we genuinely wouldn’t exist without your continued support of the club through thick and thin.
Everyone at Sprotbrough Cricket Club would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year full of good health and prosperity. Look out for the next edition of this column in January 2023!
As part of our RE and PSHE work children across school have been finding out about Diwali – the ‘Festival of Lights’ that is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. The festival marks new beginnings and celebrates the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. To mark the occasion children have been writing stories, creating rangoli patterns, drawing mehndi patterns and making their own diva lamps in clay.
On Tuesday 8th November, children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 also participated in class dance workshops based on the story of Rama and Sita. The workshops were led by a professional dancer-choreographer from the popular visiting group “West End in Schools” and gave children a wonderful opportunity to celebrate diversity and explore the medium of Indian dance. We would like to say a huge thank you to the company for such a fabulous experience that was enjoyed by both children and staff!
As part of their learning linked to Remembrance Day children in Reception made mosaic poppies and in Year 1 they enjoyed finding out about Georges Seurat, exploring the Pointillism style when drawing pictures of poppies. Year 2 children behaved in an exemplary fashion during a recent visit to Sprotbrough Methodist Church on Monday, 7th November where they enjoyed sharing their acrostic poems about remembrance with members of the community. They were also proud to display their ‘Poppy’ fabric work for all to see. Many thanks to the members of the Sprotbrough Methodist Church who gave up their time to welcome our children, providing a valuable purpose and audience to their writing.
During anti-bullying week, which started on Monday 14th November, we focused on kindness and helping children to understand that it is ok to be different and to have different opinions about things. Children explored a range of picture books and presentations to reinforce these important messages.
Finally, last year, some of our Year 2 pupils entered a competition to design a mascot for Active Fusion. We were thrilled to hear that two of our ex-pupils who are now in Year 3 at Copley Junior School were successful. We look forward to seeing their designs on future marketing materials and would like to congratulate them on their successful entries.
When taking numerous visitors around school, children have impressed us with their retention of facts and their ability to express their ideas fluently and confidently. We’re so proud children...WELL DONE! We look forward to sharing more of our news next month which will no doubt include lots about our festive preparations!
To introduce our new Key Stage One centre of interest on ‘Tudors’ children in Year 1 and Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed a visit to Sheffield Manor Lodge in the first week of this half-term. During the visit, they found out about George Talbot and Bess of Hardwick who lived at the manor in the 16th Century. They also found out that Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned at the manor for wanting to take the throne off Elizabeth I! Children were given the opportunity to dress up as Tudors and they discovered how difficult it was to write with a quill and ink. They also loved finding out about medicine in the Tudor period. They collected herbs from the apothecary garden and even made their own pomander bag to keep away the bad smells!
to take due to the pandemic. Our walks programme is back to normal and in November 30 of us travelled to Ewden Reservoir near Stocksbridge. Our A walkers completed a walk of around 11 miles and our B walkers did about 9 miles. Both groups set off around the reservoir and then split up, one group climbed up to Whitwell Moor and on to the village of Bolsterstone. The other group went towards Oughtibridge. The walks were really enjoyed by everyone, the only drawback was the misty weather which spoilt the views! Unfortunately, we can't control the weather and at least it wasn't cold or raining. We welcome new walkers so if you are looking to join a friendly group of like-minded people and love to get out in the fresh air, get in touch. Just search for Doncaster Pathfinders on Facebook, or have a look at our website.
11 of us set off from the Sprotbrough Country Club, including three new walkers, Ronny, Malc and Bev, plus the return of our Chairman David Gadd after a quick recovery from his hip operation. As soon as the walk started David was out in front taking photos, a welcome return to the familiar in this changing world. The weather was fine, not like the Thursday walk on 20th November when we experienced monsoon rains for the duration of the walk....sorry Brian). We descended the steps to the Boat Inn where the work to repair the damaged flood defence caused an unexpected hazard (not covered in the Risk Assessment) from single lane traffic on the blind bend, which we negotiated without mishap.
The weather brightened further as we walked along the River Don, and by the time we got to the flood bank by the viaduct the sun was shining, making it lovely walk round the bend in the river to Newton. A quick reverse led us over the bridge to join the TPT for a stroll up to Anchorage Lane, and we didn't see a single cyclist - is Thursday their day off? A left turn took us up to Cusworth Hall where we had a 20 minute break for refreshments and to enjoy the view. Then down the hill again to join the path that goes under the A1M, and across the fields back to Sprotbrough. Martin Wyman
Please visit our website www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/ for latest information, including future activity. Also follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/ doncasterramblers/ for details of past Rambler outings. Remember while out observe the Countryside Code and give way to other walkers.
On the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour Richmond Hill fell silent to remember. Our remembrance assembly was a lovely respectful way of all paying tribute to the fallen. Our poppy collection has gone to support the Royal British Legion Sprotbrough branch.
We are so excited to launch our very first Key Stage 1 Choir with pupils aged 5-7 years old! They were amazing. A big thank you to Mrs Elmore for arranging this and to Mr and Mrs Mellors from Rainbow Connection who are leading our weekly choir sessions - we can't wait for their first performance.
Our netball team recently competed in the Leger Sports local competition playing 3 games before play was rained off. It was their first competition and they won all their games! They played along with the most fantastic attitudes and what a team spirit they displayed.
Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic trip to York for their topic enjoying the Jorvik Viking Centre. They learnt lots of interesting facts from this historical period and really enjoyed the archaeological dig.
Our Y6 became teachers for the day - going into classes from nursery to Y5 to teach about significant people in history for part of black history awareness month. We were so proud of the planning and preparation they did, and the delivery of the lessons enjoyed by all our pupils. We certainly have some budding teachers of the future.
On 20th October Richmond Hill wore red for the 25th Anniversary of the UK’s leading anti-racism educational charity raising money to support them.
Our Y6 had a fabulous trip to Austerfield Study Centre to enjoy a day full of team building and group work. We were extremely proud that at 11am they halted their activities for 2 minutes silence and sang our school remembrance song.
