Wow where did January go! I hope 2023 has started well for you and you are still clinging to those new year resolutions.
s nice to have something to look forward to whether it s a holiday or special celebration, I have just booked tickets to see Olly Murs at YWP this summer, they also have a Whitney tribute, I have a feeling these events will sell out quickly.
Love is in the air this month so you best get your tables booked for that romantic Valentines evening. Wilds Café Bistro at the HIVE have a special Valentine menu, so no excuse, its also over a few days so plenty of options if 14th is not convenient.
If you are considering advertising your business, or have an event you would like promoted in the Arrow, contact me for details.
The March issue deadline is Wednesday 15th February The Arrow will be delivered before 1st March.

Welcome to the latest edition of Sprotbrough Cricket Club’s Arrow column, bringing you all the news and goings-on of a club at the heart of the community. We’re getting ever-closer to the start of a new season down at the Ivanhoe. We can’t wait to welcome players and supporters old and new to the hallowed turf very soon! Be sure to follow our Facebook (Sprotbrough Cricket Club) and Twitter (@CcSprotbrough) pages for the very latest news and updates as the final stretch of preseason hones into view! First, however, there is one final event of 2022 we’d like to reflect on. Back in December, we were delighted to once again play host to a successful Christmas lunch, which brought together elderly people and those who may have otherwise struggled to find people to celebrate the festive period with. 35 guests were treated to an excellent Ivanhoe Christmas Dinner with a complimentary drink and mince pies. We’d like to thank Voluntary Action Doncaster, Dearneside Fabrications, Rack King, Contura Stoves and Mark Mitchell for contributing to a lovely event. Thanks also to the Methodist Church Choir, Father Christmas and Laura Williams who donated crackers and prizes to ensure the guests had a great time. Looking forward to 2023, we have so many exciting opportunities for you to get involved in on and off the pitch. Our winter nets for our junior teams recommenced on the 23rd January, but it isn’t too late for anyone under 15 to come down if they fancy themselves as the next Ben Stokes or Alice Capsey! We’d particularly love new players in school years 5 and 6 to join our under 11s team, but we welcome anyone of any age and ability with open arms! Our junior sessions are taking place between 6pm and 9pm every Monday for the next 9 weeks at St Pius X Catholic School in Wath-upon-Deane – postcode S63 7PQ –at a cost of £5 per session or you can buy a block for the nine remaining sessions for £35. Our next session takes place on the 30th January! Similarly, our senior nets (open to all ages of people wanting to play senior cricket) are about to recommence at Sheffield Hallam University – postcode S9 1UA – on Tuesday 7th February between 8pm and 9.30pm for 10 weeks. We are keen to welcome anyone of any standard who is looking to play senior cricket! These sessions also cost £5 per week or £40 for the full 10 weeks. Payment for both junior and senior nets can be made by card, cash or bank transfer. Please see our Arrow adverts or contact our Facebook page for more information. Don’t worry if playing cricket isn’t your thing; there are still a whole range of chances to involve yourself with Sprotbrough CC this year. One way we are looking to do this is by expanding our 100 Club, a fun way to win money every week, to a 150 Club.
Participants pick a number between 1 and 100, which is assigned to a duck for a weekly virtual race – like the St Leger Stakes, but more frequent and iconic! Whichever number duck wins the race, its owner can win a prize ranging from £100 to £150 (depending on the amount of people entered). If this is something you would be interested in joining, details are available from John Marsh or Lindsay Graves, contactable via the phone number 0745503777. Entry costs £2 a week and is paid via a standing order.
If you would like to support us in a more prominent way, we recently announced the details of our 2023 sponsorship opportunities. These can provide a large outreach for your company at a reasonable cost. This year, we have three categories of sponsorship available to advertise your business in a way which is vital to the upkeep of a grassroots sports club in a fabulous community. Our Platinum Sponsorship Package (one available at a cost of £2000) is new opportunity to provide us with the catalyst to launch a Matchday Streaming Service; something which is becoming more valuable in this day and age! Clubs of a similar size with this service attract over 45,000 views per week, so it would provide big exposure for your business.
Likewise, our Gold Sponsorship Packages (eight available) provides matchday exposure through a large advertising banner which is hung around the Ivanhoe during the game. These packages are available at a cost of £650 for the first year and £500 for each year following. Please note the initial extra cost covers the cost of the banner itself. Alternatively, our Silver Sponsorship Packages (unlimited availability) allow you to sponsor a match ball across all of our games if you would prefer a more game-by-game approach to sponsorship. These are available at a cost of £25 per match and entitles you to a free cricket tea, which have to be tasted to be believed! More information on these fantastic opportunities can be found in our Arrow adverts, on our Facebook page or by contacting Robbie Graves on 07944389039. Thank you as always for reading! Look out for the next edition of this column in March 2023!
We welcomed children back to school on 4th January and have enjoyed listening to their news and finding out about their Christmas holidays. So many busy children! We are proud that they have all settled back into their usual routines and have made a super start to the new term.
To introduce our new centre of interest for this half term we were thrilled to have a visit from Matt and his amazing Space Dome! This experience was a wonderful way of stimulating the children’s learning and we have loved hearing from a number of our parents who have approached staff to tell them how this theme has captured their child’s interest and enthusiasm. It is fabulous to see children coming into school each morning, eager to share new facts with each other!
While in the Dome, Matt told the children about the solar system, star constellations and the order of the planets. They were amazed to hear that the reddish star that can be seen in the sky at night is actually Mars! Matt challenged the children to go out on a clear night to see if they could find the North Star by looking up from the bottom corner of the Big Dipper. Why not give it a try?!
We would like to say a big thank you to our supportive parents who made the contributions towards the costs of this fabulous opportunity.
During our whole school weekly singing sessions children have enjoyed learning new songs linked to our Space theme which have so far included ‘Space – it’s a Place’ and ‘The Planets’. As part of class music sessions, Year 2 children have been listening to Gustav Holst’s music ‘The Planets’ where they have had the opportunity to identify simple differences in pieces of music and describe how music can make us feel, e.g. happy, sad, scared, excited etc.
In the coming weeks, children will also be given opportunities to play a range of percussion instruments to make patterns with sounds and explore ‘Chrome Music Lab’ which is a website that makes learning accessible through fun, hands-on experiments that explore various musical elements, e.g. pitch, tempo, rhythm and pulse.
As part of their Design and Technology learning, children in Year 1 are currently working on their team building skills to make ‘Mars Rovers’ using various construction kits. They are showing true resilience and learning from mistakes to improve their designs. Watch this space for their end results!
Parents were invited into school on Tuesday 10th January to find out what children are expected to be able to do in maths by the end of the school year and how they can best support their child at home. During the workshop, strategies were demonstrated for parents to share some of the ways we teach children in school. Thank you to all parents who attended this workshop and to the Year 2 staff for organising this valued opportunity.
In the coming weeks, children in our Reception classes will be visiting the Children’s Library in the Danum Museum and Gallery where they will take part in a storytelling workshop and have a tour of the new library area. We look forward to telling you more about this in our future articles. Thanks for reading…until next time!
Y2’s Movers and Shakers topic got off to a flying start - they were delighted to welcome back some of our Y3 Mary Anning enthusiasts! Y2 children gained a lot of knowledge, asked wonderful questions and thoroughly enjoyed the fossil afternoon!
Our Nursery children had a very different school experience for their new topic ‘Long Ago’, they enjoyed the role play, but much preferred the Miss Challinor of today.
We have had a library explosion at Richmond Hill with classes from Y2 to Y6 having their own new reading books to develop in class libraries. There are some wonderful books for all to enjoy.
Spectacular Skellig
Y6’s launch day for Skellig was fantastic. The children weighed out and measured everything they needed to make salt dough feathers, they looked at the symbolism of birds in literature creating detailed art works using chalk/oil pastels feathering and blending techniques. Their finished pieces were stunning. We love Doncaster Museum! Reception enjoyed a wonderful trip to Doncaster Museum as part of their topic ‘Long Ago’. They explored artefacts, photographs and took part in some interesting workshops.
