I hope everyone had a terrific Christmas and made the most of the holiday season. Once again, December was full of community events, bringing everyone together with volunteers giving up their time to bring us joy.
So, January begins and the New Year is upon us, I hope your plans, whatever they may be, motivate you to get up out of bed on these cold dark mornings. If you are looking for a new activity this year, check our local village /church halls who are bursting with classes and events, there is sure to be something of interest.
A gentle reminder to keep an eye on your neighbours, January can be a lonely month after the fun and festivities of Christmas.
The February issue deadline for adverts and content is Wednesday 18th January. The Arrow will be delivered by 1st February 2024.

The big Christmas Light switch on at the end of November drew crowds of locals who enjoyed a day of fun and Christmas festivities at the heart of Sprotbrough village.
The organisers said ‘We thank everyone for coming and we hope you enjoyed the new display. There are so so many people to thank that it’s impossible to list everyone. Those who planned, those who worked behind the scenes, those who put on the high viz vests, those who came at a moments notice to help, all those who entertained, in fact everyone who came to see the new display … we send our thanks. AND…. We do it all again next year on Saturday November 30th 2024. Same time. Same place. This is planning day number 1.’
Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved with this project, the lights look incredible.

Welcome to the latest edition of Sprotbrough Cricket Club’s Arrow column, bringing you all the news and goings-on of a club at the heart of the community. First this month, we’d like to thank everyone who came out for our Christmas Market on Sunday 26th November. Although it seems a world away now, it was a great event enjoyed by all which raised valuable funds for the club. We even got a bit of local news coverage at the Sheffield Wire, an online news platform for South Yorkshire! Thank you to all our market stallholders and volunteers who helped set up, coordinate and pack the event away. The market would not have been possible without them. We’re looking forward to putting on some wonderful events in our community in 2024!
There are still ways to support your local cricket club all year round. One of which is by playing our 100 Club game, a fun way to win money every week. Participants pick a number between 1 and 100, which is assigned to a duck for a weekly virtual race. Whichever number duck wins the race, its owner can win £100! If this is something you would be interested in joining, details are available from John Marsh or Lindsay Graves, contactable via the phone number 07545503777. Entry costs £2 a week and is paid via a standing order.
Looking forward to 2024, preparations for the new season are well underway. It’s been a busy winter recruitment-wise so far, and we’d like to take this opportunity to welcome middle-order batter Fraser McLean, all-rounder Louis Richardson and wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Fidler to the club. We’d also like to give a huge welcome to the club to Akhil, who will be joining as our overseas player for next season. Akhil is coming to us from India – a nation which lives and breathes this wonderful game. He is a left-arm batter and spinner and we can’t wait for his all-round talent to take us to a new level. We’re so excited to see all of our new signings in action come April.
Indoor winter nets are also just around the corner for junior and senior players interested in representing Sprotbrough next season. Junior nets for u9s and u11s begin on Monday 5th February between 6pm and 7.30pm at St Pius X School at Wath, and will run for 8 weeks. Senior nets begin on Tuesday 20th February between 8pm and 10pm at Sheffield Hallam University Sports College (Bawtry Road, Brinsworth) and will also run for 8 weeks. Winter nets are a great chance for players old and new to re-acclimatise themselves with their cricketing ability. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to discover new talents, meet new people and become part of the Sprotbrough CC fraternity. Look out for updates on our social media pages, which you can find below, for more information. We hope to see you there!
Finally, we’d like to pay tribute to our very own Michael Threapleton, who has decided to hang up his spikes after over 30 years at the club. More commonly known as Threap, he’s represented Sprotbrough from junior level. Since our PlayCricket records began in 2013, he’s taken 466 wickets and posted 3656 runs. Threap was also part of our 2021 Whitworth Cup-winning campaign, pictured here (right). Over the years, he’s worked tirelessly to keep the ground and facilities in great condition. It’s hard to put Threap’s impact on our club into words but the club wouldn’t be where it is today without him. Thank you for everything, Threap. You’ll always be welcome at Sprotbrough.
Thank you as always for reading! Don’t forget to follow us on social media and look out for the next edition of this column in February 2024!

We had some special visitors come to see everyone at Richmond Hill to mark the 1st December, and countdown to Christmas! There was an array of different activities and prizes to be won to celebrate getting closer to the big day!
The children had the option to stay after school and enjoy a Christmas film, wearing pyjamas/Christmas jumpers. Hot dogs, drinks and chocolate lollies were on offer at this particular theatre – fun was had by all.

Our wonderful Choir performed at The Dome in ‘A Choral Christmas’ concert. They looked super smart in their choir uniforms and sounded absolutely beautiful, we are so proud of them!
The last few weeks have been very exciting for us at Richmond Hill –we are all now back in the same building, after nearly 3 long years! Here’s a few pics of our KS2 children moving in to their new classrooms… we are soooooo happy to be back together!!
