DOG FOULING, NO EXCUSE.

Dog mess is the most unacceptable and offensive type of litter on our streets. Keep Britain Tidy research tells us that dog fouling is the issue the public are most concerned about.

Dog fouling is not only deeply unpleasant, it is dangerous. Whilst rare, contact with dog excrement can cause toxocariasis – a nasty infection that can lead to dizziness, nausea, asthma and even blindness or seizures.

It’s no wonder dog fouling is such a problem – there are estimated to be more than 8 million dogs producing more than 1,000 tonnes of mess every day in the UK alone. While most dog owners are caring, responsible individuals, there are still some people who do not clean up after their pets. Anyone who fails to clear up after their dog can be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of up to £100. If the case goes to court this could cost the owner or person in charge of the animal up to £1,000. The law states that being unaware a dog has fouled or not having a suitable bag is not a reasonable excuse.

If someone does fail to clean up after their pet, it falls to the council to get rid of it. Normally after being reported due to children or the elderly having slipped in it. Keep Britain Tidy have a new campaign ‘We’re watching you’. This is aimed at reminding people, even at night, you can be seen and we will not put up with it.

It’s important to highlight to dog owners that any bin will do for their pet’s mess. While some councils do provide dedicated dog-fouling bins, any public bin can take the waste.

Sprotbrough Cricket Club

Welcome to the latest edition of Sprotbrough Cricket Club’s Arrow column, bringing you all the news and goings-on of a club at the heart of the community.

It’s so exciting to think we’re just a month away from the start of a new season! It’s definitely starting to feel real now, and we can’t wait to get back out there – in case you can’t tell already!

Winter nets are now in full swing for both our junior and senior teams! Whilst we’ve had a great turnout so far, that doesn’t mean it’s too late to join us in time for the new season. If this is something you or your children aged under 15 are interested in, our junior sessions are taking place between 6pm and 9pm every Monday until 27th March at St Pius X Catholic School in Wath-upon-Deane – postcode S63 7PQ. These sessions cost £5 per week. Our senior nets, which is open to people of all ages wanting to play senior-level cricket, are taking place every Tuesday between 8pm and 9.30pm at Sheffield Hallam University – postcode S9 1UA – until 28th March, but there may be more sessions after that to be confirmed. These sessions also cost £5 per week.

Regardless of whether you are completely new to cricket or an experienced veteran, we are keen to welcome anyone of any age or standard interested in playing cricket this year. We’ve said it once, but it isn’t too late to join us at our net sessions to help refine your skills before the 2023 season starts. Payment for both junior and senior nets can be made by card, cash or bank transfer.

We have also recently confirmed our important dates for the upcoming season, so make sure you save them! Thank you to everyone who joined us or renewed their time at Sprotbrough Cricket Club at our annual signing-on day on the 26th February; we’re hope you’re just as excited for the season as we are! Other important dates for the summer are as follows:

Our annual six-a-side tournament will take place on the 28th May, in memory of our dear friend Alastair Graves. It’s a day which never fails to provide great fun for all the family and is open to entry for everyone – regardless of whether you play regularly or not!

It’s also been confirmed that our annual summer barbecue will take place on the 8th July. This is another event which we feel always brings our community together, and is certainly not to be missed at the height of t-shirt weather and long days!

More information about these events will be announced in due course. If you would like the most up-todate news on winter nets, important dates for 2023 and what’s happening around the club, make sure to follow our Facebook (Sprotbrough Cricket Club) and Twitter (@CcSprotbrough) pages – which can also be contacted if necessary.

Thank you as always for reading! Look out for the next edition of this column in April 2023!

The Charity Christmas Concert

ter Wheatsheaf Singers and supported by The Co-op on Saturday 17th December 2022 at Doncaster Minster was once again a huge success. The concert once again featured performances by The Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers and Hatfield & Askern Colliery Band with The 20ft live Minster Christmas Tree creating a wonderful backdrop. The performers, The Minster staff, Co-op Food, Funeralcare and our local Co-op Member Pioneers all worked together both before the event and on the night to provide a wonderful evening's entertainment which also included refreshments during the interval. The refreshments and raffle prizes were once again provided and served by our local Coop stores and their staff. This was yet again a fantastic turnout by the people of Doncaster to support a great cause, Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust which last year celebrated their 50th Anniversary year. Proceeds from the concert and the amazing Memory Christmas tree in the Minster (which was also donated by Doncaster Coop Funeralcare) raised £1500 and a cheque was presented to members of the charity in Doncaster Minster on Monday 16th January 2023.

The attached photograph shows just a small number of the volunteers who helped to put the concert together from the choir, Coop store, Coop Funeralcare and membership personnel along with representatives from Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust and the Minster. Dorothy Miller, Chairman of the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers who organised the concert wished to extend her thanks not only to the performers but to all involved in making this event such a highlight of the Christmas celebrations in Doncaster.

The Year of the Rabbit!

Our Early Years children enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year - with some fabulous activities and a yummy taste testing.

Slowly Does It

A V.I.T (Very Important Tortoise) visited Year 2. Taco, ate, drank, took a bath and sprinted across our carpet. Pupils loved seeing Taco loving life in Y2 and respectfully created a quiet and safe environment to observe his movements. A lovely afternoon.

Team Work Makes the Dream Work

It’s all about team work in Year 6 - they have been using these skills in a set of exercises to develop shelters in den building and completing assault courses.

We Love Maths

Our weekly maths club in Year 2 is going from strength to strength. Here they are using manipulatives to support and enhance knowledge and application of number and calculations.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

At the time of writing the sun was shining on a lovely group of snowdrops, a sure sign that Spring was on the way.

We are very pleased to report that we are in the process of buying equipment for the Jasmine Centre at DRI (breast cancer). It is a table and rack which will help the theatre staff during surgery and we have donated £6,250.

Also, as previously mentioned, we are buying another couch for the Urology Department. The price has slightly increased since last month and we will donate £13,667.

We now have a final figure for the money raised by Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers along with the Hatfield and Askern Colliery Band at their annual Christmas concert at the Minster. The total came to £1,500 which included donations from the Minster Memory Tree (kindly provided by Doncaster Co-op Funeralcare). Our very grateful thanks once again to everyone involved.

If you have any fundraising ideas please let us know. Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), first floor (lift available), Room 111. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. As the office is not fully manned it is best to Email or telephone.

As always, we continue to try and improve the lives of local residents by fundraising to buy much needed cancer-related equipment for our hospitals. All donations, however small, are very welcome.

For more information on the work of the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust or to donate, please check out their web site www.dcdt.co.uk. Also on Face Book.
