Welcome to the March issue of the
Sprotbrough Arrow The first signs of spring are upon us with the glorious sound of the birds singing in the morning and the long awaited splash of colour from the daffodils. The seasons give us hope as we sense life around us changing and Spring brings evidence of new life and energy, encouraging us to feel optimistic for the future. We are so lucky to have so many lovely walks around our villages where Spring can be experienced to the full. In addition to our lovely walks, we have lots of other news of events taking place throughout March to keep everyone entertained. Be sure to catch the Artisan Craft Fayre at Yorkshire Hive or the easter egg hunt at Boston Park Farm to name but a few.
Best wishes

DONCASTER RAMBLERS
From the Crown Inn at Barnbugh ten of us set out along the road in a southerly direction before turning left after 300 yards along a track towards Barnburgh Grange and on to Melton Mill Lane, where we turned to follow a footpath alongside the road. The original Barnburgh Grange was part of Nostell Priory in whose possession it had been for over three centuries at the time of the dissolution. At the bottom of this slight hill, near the Dearne Bridge, we took a right of way between a few trees onto a very large, very muddy, field. Someone commented that it was sticky mud. Towards the middle several of us fell forward, as our feet stuck in the mud. Most were able to stumble on, although for one person, his stuck foot led to a 15 minute nightmare. The problem with getting a foot stuck in mud is that the other foot has to take a lot of pressure to release the first foot. And that foot is then stuck. Several of us spent time on our knees scraping the mud away from a stuck foot in an attempt to free it. Then repeat, again and again. Having finally reached the end of the very muddy area we were able to make reasonable progress up the hill to the Doncaster Road, where we turned right and walked to High Melton. After refreshments and a much-needed break we crossed the road and followed Hangman's Stone Lane, a dry, smooth farm track to Hangman Stone Road. However Hangman's Stone Lane has it's own story. The story goes that centuries ago, when sheep stealing was a capital offence, a man stole a sheep from a field at night. He must have injured the sheep because he was carrying it over his shoulders and had tied its feet together with a rope. When he reached the lane now known as Hangman's Stone he stopped for a rest, placing the sheep on top of a stone post whilst he himself sat on the ground. He then fell asleep. The story is that the sheep must have slipped off the stone and the rope, which the man had round his body slipped up round his neck and strangled him, so doing the hangman out of a job.

We crossed Hangman Stone Road to walk along the delightful path through Barnburgh Crags, passing a relatively recent carved face on the cliff face. After about 500 yards we turned left and started our descent, mostly skirting the edges of more muddy fields until we reached St Helen's Lane, which took us directly back to the Crown Inn, passing the site of St Helen's Chapel on the way. The ruins of St. Ellen's Chapel lie in St. Ellen's field, the most easterly of the open fields in the village. The ruins lie close to what was part of the Roman Ricknield Street now Hangman Stone Road. They are preserved in a copse a few yards away from a dried up well. It is believed that the Chapel was dedicated to Ellen, the Celtic goddess of armies and roads and was later rededicated by the early Christians to Helen, the mother of the Emperor Constantine. So, the end of an 'interesting' walk, a five-miler which felt like ten. RICHMOND HILL PRIMARY ACADEMY
In the last few weeks at Richmond Hill Primary Academy we have been very busy! Educational visitors have joined us in some year groups, we’ve had a musical extravaganza afternoon, clay sessions and science investigations galore . . . Our Reception children were investigating the effects that different foods have on teeth, in this case, we used eggs – yikes, look what the orange juice did to an egg shell!
Year 3 had a special visitor this week, watching a puppet show, alongside designing and making their own puppets – so much fun! Year 3 have also brought the Bronze Age back to Richmond Hill, making Bell Beakers out of clay.

Our music afternoon blew us away; we had singing, movement to the beat/pulse, glockenspiel and clave playing, notation reading and children composing their own music! Here we have our Year 1 children learning all about syllable rhythms. Both Year 4 and Year 5 were learning about musical notation and the difference between the lengths of the types of notes.
This year’s Ambassadors have been through a rigorous recruitment process and have also had the first term trying out their new roles. This week saw the exciting arrival of their Ambassador badges, so here are our official Ambassadors for this academic year. Look at them, don’t they just ooze our CARE values! (Collaboration, Aspiration, Resilience and Endeavour).
