Welcome to the second edition of Sprotbrough Cricket Club’s new Arrow column, bringing you all the news and goings-on of a club at the heart of the community.
Firstly, on a personal note from the editor, I’d like to thank everyone for the wonderful support we received following our first column! It’s a project we’re very proud to be taking on, and this is only the beginning! Be sure to follow us on Facebook (Sprotbrough Cricket Club) and Twitter (@CcSprotbrough) for more about what’s happening at the club!
Naturally, we’re very sad to say the 2022 English cricketing summer has officially concluded. It’s been another rollercoaster year of immense highs and gutting lows – all the weird and wonderful emotions you experience when part of a sports team. Everyone at Sprotbrough CC is incredibly proud of our players of all age brackets for giving us another great year of cricket.
That’s why it was great to celebrate everything achieved on the pitch this year at our annual end-of-season awards night, which took place on the 21st October. As always, it was a great evening with plenty to celebrate. Sprotbrough CC would be nothing without each and every one of its players and members, but we’d like to extend our warmest congratulations to all of our individual award winners – including the following.
The Clubman of the Year Award was scooped up by Leon Rudkin, who we paid tribute to in the last article. Leon has worked tirelessly with the age group that comprised of this year’s U18s, with their triumph in the Opella Cup the perfect way to round off their time as juniors. That said, the Rudkin family shouldn’t have a problem with the permanent step-up to seniors, as Will Rudkin was this year’s recipient of the Kieran Greening Award – which is given to the best performance at senior level by a junior. Will hit 388 runs for the First XI this year at an average of 29.85; figures that would make even the likes of Brendon McCullum jealous! Meanwhile, Declan Richards took the accolades for the Chris Sharpe Award, given for the best junior performance in a junior match. That was thanks to his figures of 4/16 with the ball and 21 with the bat in the U15s Osgoldcross Trophy Final, which proved vital as we won by just six runs in the end!
Other award highlights include George Thompson winning Best First XI Performance thanks to his Ben Stokes-esque 47* against Sheffield Collegiate (also discussed in the October article). Sadrian Ward was the First XI’s Top Batter, with 1106 runs at a 40.86 average. And finally, we’d like to give a special mention to
Nicky Graves for his Third XI performance against Bradfield’s Second XI back in July. His bowling figures of 8 wickets taken for 7 runs conceded were the third-best in the ENTIRE COUNTRY that weekend, and we were all immensely proud to see his name on the National Honours Board! Thank you once again to all of our players for their efforts this year; see you in 2023!
Whilst cricket matches may be finished on the Ivanhoe for 2022, we’ll be taking to the hallowed turf for the penultimate time this year – and we’d love it if YOU could join us! That is because our annual Bonfire and Fireworks Extravaganza returns on Saturday 5th November! It’s all set to be our biggest fireworks display yet, set to music once again – with a tremendous bonfire to keep you cosy. We’re also delighted to be welcoming Laura Doody Beauty for facepainting and our regular roundabout man to entertain the little ones. As always, we’ll be selling our own refreshments prepared by our delightful team, but for the first time this year, we’ll be welcoming local vendors to form our BRAND-NEW STREET FOOD MARKET! Whatever your preferences, they’ll be something for everyone as we host Madame Crepe, Love U 2 Pizzas, Silk Road, Cookie Smith, Wrights Spit & Grill and Cakes Jessica Bakes! We’re very excited to add this new aspect to this beloved village event, and hopefully – like this column – it’s the beginning of something great!
Gates will be open from 4.30pm on the day, with an admission fee of £5 (free entrance for under 5s). We would also welcome any volunteers the next day to help tidy up and return the Ivanhoe field to its lovely condition.
This night, as with all our other fantastic public celebrations, would not be possible without the amazing work of our volunteers – so we are always on the lookout for people who’d be happy to give back to both this great club and our cherished village!
Thank you! Look out for the next column in the December 2022 edition of the Arrow!
We have had a fantastic Autumn term so far here at Orchard. As part of our ‘Great Outdoors’ centre of interest we have followed up the earlier visit we had to Sandall Beat Wood by exploring and working in our beautiful school grounds.
Children in Year 2 have been busy creating their own artwork using natural ephemera collected from within the school grounds. This work was inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy, a British artist who is known for producing natural sculptures and environmental land art, and the local artist, James Brunt, who is well known for his stone balanced artwork. Both staff and children were thrilled that James even replied to an email that was sent from the children to share some of their creations! He praised their work and asked staff to congratulate the ‘artists’ involved. Children have also been inspired by one of their favourite authors, Julia Donaldson, to create their own stick people based on the story ‘Stick Man’.
Year 1 children have also been incentivised by Julia and one of her other popular stories ‘The Gruffalo’ when they worked collaboratively to prepare a delicious ‘Gruffalo fruit crumble’ as part of their food technology work. They certainly enjoyed tasting the result…yum! They have also revelled in exploring clay to make their own hedgehogs complete with wooden spines! Their next mission is to build log-pile houses and mini-beast homes where they will experiment with leaning and stacking techniques to create stable structures around the school field. Watch this space for their outcomes!
Early years children have revelled in a range of outdoor learning opportunities too this half term. Some activities have included using natural materials (a favourite being the conkers collected from our huge horse chestnut tree!) to make simple patterns and sort objects into numbered groups to support their maths learning.
We have included some of the many photographs that have been taken to share some of our fabulous work with you.
The Autumn term has seen the return of our ‘after school clubs’ which have been well attended by many of our Key Stage 1 children. Children have enjoyed taking part in a range of sporting activities which have not only helped to develop specific sporting skills but have encouraged children to work collaboratively, enhancing their ability to work as part of a team.
Following a period of absence due to previous Covid restrictions, staff and children have also warmly welcomed the return of ‘Open the Book’. This involves a team from the local churches who come into school to present key bible stories during school assemblies. The children look forward to Wednesday mornings when they eagerly await the story that will be acted out. Thank you to all those involved in this valuable experience.
We are very much looking forward to taking part in a special Harvest assembly before we break up for half term when Reverend Amanda will pay one of her regular visits to school. Thank you to those parents/ carers who have sent in donations for this which will be given to ‘Caring for Doncaster’ that supports the homeless.
We will look forward to sharing more of our new and exciting learning in next month’s issue.

Our Reception children have had their first school visit and what better place to go than our very own Sprotbrough Library. It was a wonderful experience for all. They certainly enjoyed ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’ and the fabulous stories and activities throughout the day. Thank you for a fantastic visit.
A great afternoon of football was had by our Y5/6 and Y3/4 boys’ teams competing for the first time in a Leger Sport competition. We were very proud of the fantastic behaviour and attitudes demonstrated with also a runner up place for our Y3/4 team. Well done to both teams representing Richmond Hill so well.
Year 4 have been working really hard to learn their times tables using TT Rockstars and just look at how well they are doing - we can’t keep up with the awards they are all receiving through their determination - such superstars we think!

Thanks to Miss Russell our Science Lead, Richmond Hill has ‘borrowed the moon’ after she applied to the STFC (Science and Technology Facilities Council) Lunar Rocks and Meteorites Loan Scheme, and was security approved to host the precious samples. She has delivered lessons to every class from nursery to Y6, so they have enjoyed exploring the loan box containing meteorite samples from NASA including Moon rock discs from Apollo 15 and Martian meteorites. A truly unique learning experience for all.
It was so lovely to see so many of our parents, carers and friends at our Macmillian Coffee Morning & Afternoon! That big we had to do it twice. Thank you to all who attended, donated cakes for sale and bought cakes and drinks at the event. Our
Year 6 Super Servers were simply fabulous. Collectively we raised a wonderful £726.07 for the charity.
