THE BIG SWITCH ON Sprotbrough Christmas Lights are very excited about seeing the results of their huge investment in extra lights in trees around the green in Sprotbrough this year and the huge Christmas Tree. This has been made possible by donations, sponsorship and fund raising events and, particularly for this year, an exceptional generous donation from an anonymous source! Their message is: “We at Sprotbrough Christmas Lights would like to thank all those that are supporting the event this year, be it financially, as working volunteers or by attending on the night. Without such help and support, the event would not be possible! We hope you’ll enjoy the new tree and the extra lights we have installed this year around the green. Our aim has been, over the last ten years, to make the Switch-On event bigger and better each year. We feel that we’ve reached the stage now where we’ve put Sprotbrough on the map and have a community display to be really proud of!” We hope everyone can take part in the event and has a great time. What a fantastic start to the festive season.

SPROTBROUGH
CRICKET CLUB NEWS Welcome to the latest edition of Sprotbrough Cricket Club’s Arrow column, bringing you all the news and goings-on of a club at the heart of the community. We’ve already started counting down to getting back out onto the pitch in April! Be sure to follow our Facebook (Sprotbrough Cricket Club) and Twitter (@CcSprotbrough) pages for regular updates around the club for both the off-season and preparations for next season! In October, we hosted both our junior and senior end-of-season award nights. Our junior award night was held on the 14th October at St Mary’s Church Hall, and was a wonderful evening enjoyed by all of our junior players and their families. Amongst our award winners, it was Dan Credland – pictured with club captain Dean Williamson – who took home the prestigious Kieran Greening Award, presented for the best junior performance in a senior match. Dan took five wickets for 23 runs and hit the winning runs (scoring 9-not-out in a final-wicket partnership of 19) in a nail-biting one-wicket win for the Second XI against Wath back in June. Wath were eventually promoted from the league, making Dan’s performance all the more special. We’d also like to give a special mention to Nick Graves and Eric Brown, who both won the Junior Bowling Award for their respective divisions at the Yorkshire Cricket Southern Premier League end-of-season awards earlier in October. The future of Sprotbrough CC is in safe hands! Our senior presentation night was held on the 20th October at the clubhouse. Congratulations to all of our award winners and thank you to each and every one of our players of all ages for representing the famous Copley crest this season. We’d like to take this opportunity as well to thank everyone who helped us tidy the ground away for the winter ahead at the end of September. It’s always sad when one season ends but it makes us even more excited for what’s to come next year! See you all soon for what is undoubtedly going to be another memorable season in 2024. Looking forward to November now, we’re about to play host to two of our biggest off-pitch events of the year. First up, our annual Bonfire and Fireworks Extravaganza will take place on the 4th November. It’s an event which never fails to provide great entertainment for all the family! Our fantastic street food market returns following last year’s success. Wrights Spit&Grill, MeatCastles, Yamas, Brewpark Coffee, Madame Crêpe, Cakes Jessica Bakes, 500 Degrees North, The Cookie Smith and The Brisket Pit will all be here to make a great night even tastier! Gates will open at the Ivanhoe at 4.30pm; we’d highly recommend coming down early for a wonderful family evening out. You can buy the tickets in advance (using the QR code on this page), costing £5 per person – under 5s go free – or on the gate. We would politely like to ask, if you are travelling to the event by car and plan on parking near the Ivanhoe, to please consider our neighbours by parking carefully and thoughtfully. Thank you very much for your cooperation; we can’t wait to see you all for an amazing night! At the end of the month, we have our 2023 Christmas Market to look forward to. It’s another great family day out here at Sprotbrough CC and will take place on Sunday 26th November from 10.30am to 4.30pm. We still have availability for stalls to sell your products. If you are interested, please contact Lindsay Graves on 07545503777 or email scc19419@gmail.com for more details.
Thank you as always for reading! Look out for the next edition of this column in December 2023!

RICHMOND HILL PRIMARY Ceremonial Celebrations We are so proud that Chloe has been selected this year from Richmond Hill to hold the position of Primary Ambassador to the Civic Mayor. What a wonderful time she had at the Mansion House enjoying the robing ceremony. Football Champions It may have been a little wet, but it didn’t stop our Y3/Y4 superstar boys being crowned winners at the Leger Sport competition. Unbeaten in all games played and a great present for Mr Burke on his birthday. Thank you for taking them Mrs JohnsonQuinn & Mr Burke.
Autumn Days Our Nursery children have been out and about searching for autumn treasures, making some wonderful art. We have some budding photographers too.

Magnificent Birds of Prey After inclement weather halted the Year 3 trip in September, they finally were able to enjoy it in October, with a wonderful visit to the Birds of Prey centre as part of this term’s topic. A great day was had by all. Exploring History It was another exciting trip as Year 4 travelled to the Royal Armouries in Leeds for a fun filled day of workshops, role play and exploration of artefacts. Superb Sportsmanship Our Y5/Y6 boys have been the first group this term out of school in competitions, taking part in a Leger Sport football tournament. We were so proud of them. Skill, teamwork and fantastic attitudes on display. They placed second in the competition losing out in a nail biting penalty shoot out to the winners.
Shaping Young Minds As part of black history month our Y6 have been researching, planning then delivering lessons around school to link with each year group’s topics on significant people. From nursery to Y5 the children have enjoyed lessons from our teachers of the future - watch out they are fantastic.

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School Open the Book Here at Orchard, we have recently welcomed ‘Open the Book’ back into school after the summer break. We are thrilled this small team from the local community help support the delivery of our RE curriculum. The children are always fascinated to watch the Bible stories they dramatize and we are always amazed at the thoughtful questions they ask. After watching the story, ‘Saul is chosen to be king’ the children wanted to know why the people wanted a king, why Saul was a bad king and why did God choose David, not the older sons, to be the next king? This story, and the image of unwrapping a present, helped children to think about whether what is on the outside matters as much as what is on the inside. Reception Poetry As part of the EYFS curriculum, children in Reception are expected to recite poems from memory. Our Reception children have spent time learning ‘Chop, Chop’ and ‘Falling Apples’ ready to perform in assembly later this term. Science Learning Last week, as part of our ongoing monitoring and evaluation, it was wonderful to visit all classes to see what children were learning in Science. Our curriculum has been designed to help children build on previous knowledge and ensure they make progress across school. In Nursery, children were involved in a variety of activities that focused on naming external body parts and understanding what these parts were used for. In Reception, children were encouraged to build on the knowledge they gained in Nursery by using the names of a wider number of body parts and applying their knowledge of how humans change over time to a sequencing activity. Building on their work about habitats, Year 1 children were able to recall the names of familiar wild plants and talk about the features that helped them to identify them. They were also able to explain that wild plants do not need to be planted or looked after by humans. In order to help them remember the facts they had learnt about minibeasts and micro-habitats, Year 2 children were working in pairs to feedback their new knowledge to the rest of the class. They applied new vocabulary like hibernate, camouflage, predator and prey within their spoken and written sentences. Year 2 Wreath Workshop Our Year 2 children who stayed behind after school on Wednesday 4th October had a fabulous time making their autumnal wreaths. They had great fun designing, creating and learning from each other. Even though the aim was for the children to enjoy doing something different, they were still learning as they experimented with different techniques to tie/fasten their decorations onto the wreath base, discovering what worked and what didn’t in the process! Some of the finished wreaths will be taken to St Mary’s Church when the Y2 children visit to share some of their Harvest learning. Special thanks go to Miss O’Hara and Mrs Nicol for giving up their time to stay and support the children in this extra-curriculum activity – it was much appreciated! An inspired idea Miss Jones and Miss Altoft and looking forward to your next brainwave! Community—Harvest Assembly Reverend Amanda joined us in school on Monday 9th October for our Harvest Assembly. We collected lots of non-perishable food/toiletries to pass onto a local charity, ‘Caring for Doncaster’ that supports the homeless. Thank you to all the families who donated to this worthy cause.
