As the days grow shorter and the crispness of autumn gives way to the chill of winter, this time of year always reminds me of how fortunate we are to live in such a wonderful community. It's a season that brings us together and we can all look ahead to the events that make our village so special.
November and December are months filled with tradition, festivity, and remembrance. Soon, our villages will be ablaze with red poppies, a poignant reminder of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in times of conflict. As we prepare for Remembrance Sunday and hold our moments of silence, we will remember them. It’s these acts of communal respect and gratitude that remind us of the shared values and history that bind us together.
You will find the November Arrow full of festive events from the Great Christmas light switch on to festive fayres, bustling markets to the heartwarming sound of carol singers. These events, running throughout November and December, offer something for everyone, and I am always amazed by the effort and passion that goes into organising them. They reflect the heart of our community spirit and the joy of gathering together.
Best wishes
The December issue deadline for adverts and content is Wednesday 13th November. The Arrow will be delivered by 1st December.

Welcome to the latest edition of Sprotbrough Cricket Club’s Arrow column, bringing you all the news and goings-on of a club at the heart of the community.
Although we’re into the wilderness months, don’t forget to check out our social media pages (at the bottom of this article) for the latest club throughout the winter!
This month, we’re celebrating our Sunday XI after a great 2024 season which saw them win the Barnsley and District Cricket League. The team’s seven victories this season allowed them to finish four points clear of Fenwick CC with 67 points. Before we celebrate individual achievements, we’d like to thank everyone at the club who has represented and helped out with the Sunday XI this season.
Starring with the bat this year was Matt Fidler. It was Matt’s first season at the club and took up wicketkeeping duties for the First XI on Saturdays. However, his handiness with a bat in hand allowed him to come away with Sunday team silverware too. He scored 337 runs for the Sundays this season, over 100 more than anyone else for the team, averaging about 67. His high score of 72 against league rivals Fenwick against May went a long way in our 121-run victory. Congratulations on a fantastic debut season, Matt!
In the bowling department, it was off-spinner Nicky Graves who extended his electric form for the Second XI across the entire weekend. Nicky has been with the club since he was a junior and has regularly featured alongside his relatives across all of our teams, but has really shone this season. He took 17 wickets for the Sundays, averaging 3.35 with the ball across 42.2 overs. His best figures of 5/15 blew Conisbrough away back in late-July, allowing Sprotbrough to chase down 104 for a five-wicket win. Well done on capping off a fantastic 2024 season, Nicky!
Our individual performance of the season goes to Paul Hunt, whose wonderful all-round effort against Crofton Phoenix in June was instrumental in securing a 57-run win. After Sprotbrough won the toss and chose to bat, Paul made an impressive 51 from 46 balls batting at number six, including four 4s and three 6s. With Crofton chasing 190 on a windy afternoon, Paul ripped through their middle order, picking up 3 wickets for just 12 runs. After rotating the bowlers, their tail couldn’t knock the runs off, securing victory for Sprotbrough. Nice work, Paul! In other news, we’d like to thank everyone who came along to our annual Six-a-Side tournament at the end of September. It was a wonderful day of fancy dress, fundraising and cricket. Congratulations to Second XI captain Tom Langley’s Wrestlers for breaking the Marsh brothers’ monopoly of the last few years and taking victory!
Looking forward, our annual Bonfire and Fireworks Extravaganza returns on Saturday 2 November, and it promises to be our biggest and best event yet! Gates open at 4.30pm and with our fantastic street food market returning, it’s a great evening out for all the family.
You can buy tickets on the gate or in advance, via the QR code, and cost £5 each – with under-5s going free. Both cash and card are accepted on the gate but we highly recommend booking in advance. We’d also politely like to ask, if you are travelling to the event by car and plan on parking near the Ivanhoe, to please consider our neighbours by parking carefully and thoughtfully. Thanks for your cooperation – we can’t wait to see you there!
Thank you as always for reading! Don’t forget to follow us on social media and look out for the next edition of this column in December 2024!
