2010 Scout Road Race and Gala Sprotbrough scouts welcomed the village and a field of nearly 160 runners to their annual gala on new lane playing fields on Sunday 20th June. The weather could not have been better for the gala if a little warm for the runners. The 6.5km race began at 2pm and the ultimate winner Josh Lowe took an early lead which he maintained throughout the race coming home in a time of 22min 41 sec. The first scout home and winner of the scout shield was Tom Douthwaite. The Gala also saw the last shift on duty for Sprotbroughs community police officer Lynne Walker who retired after the event , the scouts made a presentation and offered thanks to her for her support over recent years.

Special treat from Local Salon International City Church youth group, „Girlzone‟ had a very special treat organised for them this month. A day at local salon, vintage beauty, where the girls experienced pampering first hand! ‗Vintage beauty Salon owner, Diane Powell said, ―We have had 2 visits from the Girlzone section of the church so far where we treat the girls to a nail paint and the older ones to spray tanning, we also spent time with them talking about skin care and giving them a salon tour. The girls had a fabulous time and we really enjoyed having them. We hope to create strong friendships with the girls as this will be a continued visit for them‖. The International City Church runs two youth clubs, one on Netherhall Road and one in Edlington. The charity group aims is to provide a centre for children to socialise in a fun and safe environment where they become involved in activities and organised trips. This charity is run by the church and they are doing an amazing job with many youngsters. Details of the church are International City Church, Netherhall Road, Doncaster www.internationalcitychurch.com

Off to the Farne Islands
Copley Junior School Sprotbrough
Highs and Lows of the Year 6 Residential Brought to you by… year 6! Highs When we went to the beach on the second day. We had loads of fun swordfighting, playing cricket, swordfighting, jumping down sand dunes, swordfighting, refreshing in the supposed-to-be-freezing sea and a bit more swordfighting! Being a whole group was well and truly the highlight of the holiday, it really made me proud to be part of Copley Junior School Travelling to the Farne Islands because we got to see loads of interesting things and on the way back Mr. White and Miss Mellor had a water fight emptying everybody‘s water bottles. Lows Taking a 5 mile walk to a massive sand dune on an absolutely boiling day resulting in getting sand down my trousers which wasn‘t pleasant because everybody was really sweaty…… Getting up really early to get ready for the day ahead of us. Plus, on the last day Mr. White threw three shoes at me to wake me up, owwww! (Actually Charlie it was four, you are a heavy sleeper – Mr. White)

Skincare Make up Nails Skincare Make up Nails Dear Reader, Last month we focused on treatments to prepare your body for your annual holiday in the sun – this month we will look at the many treatments that will make your fingers and toes look stunning for Summer!
We all want our hands to look their best but this can prove to be a difficult task with both nature and housework taking it‘s toll! Sometimes we need a bit of help with a professional manicure to re shape our nails and give some extra TLC to our cuticles! However, if you want your nails to look their best every day of your holiday, then there are a few options; Bio Sculptures or Nail Extensions. Bios are available in a range of beautiful fashion colours, delicate shimmers, french manicure and glitter gels, the benefits are endless: they are strong, flexible, natural looking, and won‘t chip, smudge or wear away. They strengthen and condition natural nails and have been tested to the highest standard. However, if you require lengthening of the nail, Acrylic Nail Extensions are a perfect answer; they look natural and beautiful and you can choose either a ‗french manicure‘ look or varnish with your preferred colour or nail art design selected from the many that are now available.
If your feet are in desperate need of some care and attention
a pedicure is definitely the answer. If you do not relish the job yourself, then an appointment with a therapist will do the trick! At Perfect Harmony you can get all of the following for just £19 - a perfect way to spend an hour of your time. ‗Get Fresh‘ Luxury Pedicure using the ‗Get Fresh‘ foot care products loaded with ingredients such as seaweed, aloe vera juice, shea butter, pumice and fruit acids. Treatment includes nail re-shaping, cuticle treatment, gentle removal of hard skin, Perfect Harmony/Arrow‟s Gift Voucher exfoliation and Is going to a lady who lives on Ashburnham masque, soothing foot Gardens who could really do with a little bit of and leg massage and „me time’ at this moment. varnish if requested - a beautiful treatment for tired and aching feet.
Or the fabulous Minx which we have featured on many occasions. Minx is a solid nail coating that comes in foil and sparkly metallics, photo quality designs and any colour under the sun. There is no drying time, it does not smudge or chip and it can last up to 8 weeks on toes and up to a week on fingers!

History of the Highway Code Dear readers, 1st June 2010 marks the 75th anniversary of the introduction of the driving test in the UK. Drivers today still need to continually improve their driving techniques in increasingly demanding driving conditions and keep their skill levels up to date. Our driving tests, however, have changed little over the years and an improvement in driving standards is needed to fill the gap. Although cars are becoming easier to drive – with much improved brakes and suspension as well as power-steering and a host of other safety systems, traffic has significantly increased and traffic networks have become immensely more complex. Therefore, the driver needs far more understanding of what‘s going on outside the car. In the UK, 71 per cent of road deaths occur on rural roads. It is improving the driver that will make the single biggest improvement to road safety in the future. In 1935 the driving test was introduced: within a year the death toll had fallen by nearly a thousand
In 1934, 7,343 people were killed on Britain's roads when there were just 2.4 million vehicles. In 2008 there were two-thirds fewer deaths (2,538), but fourteen times as many vehicles (34 million)
n 2008 the learner pass rate was 41 per cent for women and 47 per cent for men.
However, that still leaves plenty of room for improvement. The 1931 edition: cost one old penny and contained 18 pages of advice, compared to 133 pages in the 2007 edition. The 1935 edition included advice to drivers of horse drawn vehicles to ‗rotate the whip above the head; then incline the whip to the right or left to show the direction in which the turn is to be made. Since those early days, regular revisions of the Code have reflected changes in technology and developments in traffic management and road safety. Diagrams of road signs - just ten signs in all - were first seen in the second edition, as was a warning about the dangers of driving when affected by alcohol or fatigue. Stopping distances made their first appearance in the third edition, along with new sections giving hints on driving and cycling. The arrival of motorways in the late 1950s led to the inclusion, in the fifth edition, of a new section on motorway driving, explaining such things as how to use exit slip roads and advising drivers to avoid drowsiness by stretching their legs at the parking or service areas. The 70-page 1978 edition introduced the Green Cross Code for pedestrians and the new orange badges for the disabled. Prompted by soaring car crime statistics, the amended version contained advice on vehicle security. The 1990s saw a new format taller booklet and the inclusion of a section geared to the new driving theory test, which in the current edition has now become part of the Code itself. To be continued: If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer, you’ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 020 8996 9600 Safe Driving. Sprotbrough Road Community Church (Methodist)
The Family Table Hello again, I‘m back from holiday in the USA and at the Pilgrim Covenant Church where they have kept me filled with God‘s love. I have been sitting around a few different tables. But first I must tell you that at last my dearly loved table is whole again. Gordon has mended the leg for me, so the table is once again on solid ground. Praise the Lord, let us also be grounded by Him. Over there, on a Wednesday morning the Pastor takes a Bible class, where we gather around a large oblong table, seating about ten to twelve people (that sounds familiar doesn‘t it). The room is also used for the Choir practice and there is a library of Christian books. Afterwards we all go for lunch at a small café near the Church where we put two tables together and discuss our meeting and of course put the world to rights. On the Friday evening we have a house group where we sit around small tables in the conservatory. We sing a couple of songs, pray, read a passage from the Bible and discuss what we‘ve read. The fellowship is wonderful. It‘s just the same here in England, at Gordon‘s house on Tuesday mornings we have a prayer meeting, then some of us have lunch at a local pub and this helps us to get to know each other. On Tuesday evenings we also have a house group binding us together with different people from other Churches. How wonderful it is to sit with others who love the LORD JESUS as we do. To think that this is happening all over the world too, not just in our own Churches. I ask those of you who read my little missive in the ‗The Arrow‘ to try and find an hour during your busy week to spend time with someone who wants to learn more about Jesus. What a difference this makes to our lives. If you can‘t find a group please telephone the number on this page and we can help. You can also call at any of the venues, all invitations are free. We would love to hear from you. God Bless you all. See you next month Jean Scott
