ESSENTIAL

Editors letter...

I always find September a really motivating month, probably born from the memories of facing a new academic year at school no doubt, fresh start and eagerness to get going... If you are starting something new, whether it be a business or activity group, please let us know so we can share your story with others in the village. If you have been part of a group for some time and feel it needs a bit of promotion, again, let us know so we can help you spread the word. The October issue goes to print around 15th September, so please e-mail me your articles etc by this date. Thank you to everyone who continues to support the Arrow and keep us all up to date with what is happening in your village.

News, News, News, News, News, News "Travels and Collaborations" by the Brevon Studio Artists. Brevonart Gallery, 6 Bass Terrace, Thorne Road. Doncaster DN1 2HZ 7th August - 17th September 2010 Terry Chipp, Katherine Milns and Nathan Turnbull (The Brevon Studio Artists) occupy the studios above the BevonArt Gallery in Doncaster. Established about a year ago, "Travels and Collaborations" is the group's first joint exhibition in more ways than one. As well as showcasing their individual talents through paintings based on their extensive travels they are showing their collaborative works for the first time. All three artists work on these paintings at the same time, usually in a public space and often with public participation. The end results are as different and as unpredictable as the events that inspire them. The exhibition was formally opened on 6th August by Dr Jo Willoughby, Britain‘s leading international sit-skier. For more information see www.brevonstudioartists.com or www.brevonart.com or phone the gallery on 01302 366133.

News, News, News, News, News, News CHATROOM 4 THURSDAY If you read this magazine very carefully every month, you may have noticed the name of this group as the very last entry under ‗What‘s On In Sprotbrough?‘ and wondered what it was all about. It has been meeting at the Methodist Church on Park Drive on the 4 th Thursday of the month, from September to June (excluding December), for three years now and is a group that anyone is welcome to join. It offers an opportunity to meet people, whilst at the same time providing information and entertainment thanks to a variety of speakers. This year, we have learned about Tools for Self Reliance, a village group which collects old tools and sewing machines so that they can be repaired and sent out to third world countries; the Doncaster Repair and Support Service, which provides a free service helping the elderly and disabled; a film show of A Visit to Marrakesh; the Singing Vicar; and a talk on Wynthrop Park garden prior to making a visit there in June. The new season begins on Thursday 26 September, beginning at 2 pm (not 1.30 as stated in the Arrow) when the speaker will be Janet Conroy, a poet, who has called her presentation ‗Away with Words‘, a mix of poems, short stories and anecdotes. In October, I hope Age Concern might whet your appetite to come along on the 28th when ‗Get Cooking – Keep Healthy‘ will be the topic. Anyone is welcome to drop in for all or part of the session until 4 pm, so don‘t be shy, come and meet everyone and make it part of your social diary.

POWDER WORKS – 6 By Peter Finnerty We are now up to the sixth article in this series, the last one having been published last November 2009. I have

had my replacement knee since 23rd January this year and am still working on getting it to bend more than 90 degrees, and have been back at full time work since June. I have been looking forward to putting together a few more lines about the former Powder Works at Denaby, so I hope you enjoy this piece. I did some background checks and discovered that Denaby Powder Works opened in 1889 for the manufacture of explosives. One website that Google found concerned ―The Dictionary of Explosives‖ which states that Denaby Powder was the name used for a variety of blasting explosives including Dominite, Dragonite and Dreadnought Powder. These 3 were all coal-mine explosives, the Dominite one originating from Germany. Denaby Powder consisted of a compressed mixture of Securite and Charcoal. The Powder Works were known as the Westfalite Works, part of the ICI Nobel Division (also known as their Explosives Division). Looking further afield I found another website focussed on Nellie Lindley, nee Constantine; when World War 2 started she worked there assembling explosives for the war effort. If anyone has anymore details please contact me. One of my visits has been with Nancy Bagnall nee Beaumont, a sprightly early 80 year old, living now at Sprotborough. She was married to Reg Beaumont, a well known journalist. Her brother in law Jack Newbart was married to her step-sister Kit or ―Kitty‖ and he worked at the Powder Works. His skin had a yellow hue after working there. But he never spoke about his work there. He was a quiet person. They lived in Crossgates in Mexborough and had a daughter called Maureen who may still live there. Nancy sometimes sees her in Mexborough with Yvonne who is Maureen‘s older sister. Jack and Nancy knew each other from him being 10 years old to the day he died. His full name was John Reuben Newbart.

16

Nancy rang her sister in law, Betty Beaumont nee Ironmonger. Betty lives in Church Street at Mexborough and she offered to come through and talk with us. When she arrived she had plenty memories which are still vivid even to a 79 year old lady! Betty worked at the Powder Works from 1946 to 1948 and started in the Soldering Sheds, and describes the money as good. In 1948 she married, and the rules stated that she had to finish working there. The Soldering Sheds were inside the Wiring Sheds. Her and her friends job was to solder a wire onto a fuse head. The place itself was called the Munitions Factory then, and was inside Denaby Woods. No one was allowed there, and lots of notices were everywhere to warn people off. No lighters were allowed, another part of security, and they had to hand them in. You could tell who worked in the powder part and who worked in the soldering and other parts because of the yellow colour always on the powder people. Betty always worked daytime, never at night. She remembers they had to put little ―1‖ wire into fuse heads and solder them on. There was a glass screen to protect the workers from the soldering. During the war, they could see over the railway lines and fields and trees, where there was a large gun which shot at the bombers in the distance attacking Sheffield. Betty and her pals called it ‗Big Bertha‘. Often, a Buzz Bomb flew over the works and peoples‘ homes towards their target Sheffield, and were so low her mother used to say ―Keep low or it will hit you‖. Near Petits shop in Mexborough there was an Air Raid Shelter, close to The Bull‘s Head pub, and a Wine Lodge. You had to get to it through a tunnel under the road, and Betty and friends had to use it twice. Two nights on the trot one December, there were bombardments, and it was so cold that on the first night Betty‘s father gave out Sherry to those who wanted it. Guess what, the shelter was packed full on the second night after people heard of this!

Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements

Some of the people that stand out in Betty‘s mind include Betty Pearson, a little blonde girl from Denaby who had a lovely singing voice. Another memory was Mary Stanley who was a Supervisor over them, and was a nice lady. She has been mentioned in a previous edition. Mary is in the photo in the 4th article, part 2, the lady with the flowers (Sept 2009 edition of Conisbrough In Focus). Others are May Lindsey who lived in Denaby, Iris Myers who lived at Mexborough, Dorothy Rufus from Denaby, Olive Sleaford from Mexborough, Madge Foy of Conisbrough, Madge Trant of Conisbrough, Joyce Hodgetts, Jack Cope, Joan Boon, and a girl called Helen and her sister whose surname she believes was Foy. Betty Beaumont continued saying that Pat Ironmonger is her sister in law, and in turn Pat‘s sister is Beryl Cutts, nee Cauwood. Beryl and Pat both worked at the Powder Works when Betty was there. They used to gather together and have a walk about together. They all had green three cornered scarves that they had to wear, supplied by the works, to blend in with the woods during the war.

Betty mentioned that every so many years exPowder Works people have a Get-Together. The Empress Ballrooms at Mexborough has been one venue, and others have been at the former Pig, and Reresby Arms. There used to be a row of tiny houses on Doncaster Road then, lots of them and they appeared to be black houses, occupied by miners. If you would like to provide any further reminiscences or know someone who might have some, please contact me on 01302 86612. I have mentioned Patricia 'Pat' Ironmonger previously, and a while ago she sent me a photo of the Mexborough Grand Rink Hockey Club (below) taken 1931. The Grand Rink was located in the brickyard at Mexborough. Steve Breeze used to stage professional boxing in the rink occasionally. It will evoke memories I'm sure. Pat's mum, Lucy Hague is third from the left on the Second Row. Pat's dad, Harold Cauwood is second from the right on the Front Row. He was one of the team.

Skincare Make up Nails Skincare Make up Nails Dear Reader,This magazine should be landing on your doorstep just days before the St. Leger, so I hope all those of you who intend to frequent the races have a fantastic day and arrive home somewhat richer than when you departed! The topic I am going to cover this month is ageing - not a favourite topic for many of us, I know, but having reached the big ‗40‘ this year and entered the middle period of my life, I for one realise that it is something that has to be faced sooner or later, so I thought I would share with you some things that might help you along your way.

I am always being asked what treatments are available to help us look younger - especially how we can achieve a fresher, more youthful complexion - One of the more popular facial treatments available which achieves noticeable results, is Facial Lifting. This relaxing treatment involves pulsing a micro current through the skin, thereby stimulating the underlying muscles and tissues, which then tighten and firm, thus creating a more toned appearance. The effect on lines and wrinkles is distinctly softening. Good facial treatments, using scientifically proven products, have a wonderful way of strengthening the skin cells and improving the collagen and elastin. Given nutrients that it recognises, such as amino acids, vitamins and proteins, skin displays apparently miraculous powers of selfregeneration. For this reason, at Perfect Harmony we use the ‗Danne‘ products from America for all our facial treatments. Whereas some products merely act upon the skin, Danne products enter into partnership with it!

As we all know, the best way to delay the ageing process is to live healthily. By avoiding smoking, alcohol, sunbathing, stress and poor diet, we will age more slowly and more gracefully. Enjoying a well-balanced diet, including plenty of omega 3 oils, which are present in oily fish such as salmon and mackerel; and antioxidants, which are present in blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries; and refraining from processed foods such as bread, cakes, cereals and microwave meals, will greatly help in keeping those wrinkles at bay. Plenty of purified water, fresh air and exercise are also hugely beneficial in arresting the march of time.

Other options to consider if you wish to ‗turn the clock back‘ are the infamous wrinkle injections and dermal fillers, both of which can produce amazing results. At Perfect Harmony these treatments are administered by a qualified medical practitioner, so clients can have the confidence that they are in safe hands.

Beyond The Standard Driving Test Dear readers, The government has made the standard Driving Test more difficult in recent years, with the addition of a multiple-choice test and a computerised hazard-awareness assessment. However it still only involves learning the most fundamental driving skills and doesn‘t include preparation for poor-weather or motorway driving. The standard L-test is simply an introduction to driving a vehicle. Your further education takes place on today‘s congested roads and provides a steep and often precarious learning curve, this is where Driver education comes in. On the U/K‘s congested roads it‘s important that you‘re always in the right frame of mind to drive. A positive attitude will help to reduce the risk of collisions through tolerance and courtesy, by being realistic as to your own abilities, and by maintaining a high degree of care for your own safety and others. Driving on UK roads can be very stressful, but you must always remain cool-headed tolerant and courteous–helping to avoid or diffuse any threatening situations. Don‘t let your driving standards be affected by other motorist‘s mistakes or behaviour. Stay relaxed, don‘t be provoked and remember that, if you do make a mistake an apologetic wave is often all it takes to put things right. Don‘t let your enthusiasm for driving tempt you into breaking the speed limit or driving dangerously always know what speed you are doing and know what the maximum speed limit is. Remember timid drivers can be as dangerous as aggressive drivers. Always expect the worst from other motorists and try to understand what they are aiming to achieve. If you allow for poor observation and slow reactions, you‘ll find you‘re always prepared for the worst-case scenario. Whether you‘re a novice motorist or an experienced driver, you‘ll always find room to improve your driving skills. Keep an open mind, be realistic about your limitations and always be prepared to learn from any errors you make. When following other drivers, always apply the two-second rule if you suspect they may not be totally focused on their driving, leave an even bigger gap to give you extra braking time. Tailgating is a common cause of collisions, it is dangerous and antisocial and can never be condoned.

The Driving Position.

One of the most important aspects of driving a modern machine involves achieving the perfect driving position every time you get behind the wheel. This allows you maximum control over your vehicle and will keep you more comfortable and alert on longer journey’s It’s also the position most often adopted by racing drivers, especially rally and touring car drivers. Sit in the car with the base of your spine in the back of the seat to prevent back problems. Hold the wheel at ten-to-two or quarter-to-three. Keep your thumbs vertical. Whenever possible adjust the steering wheel rake for improved control and to enable you to see all the dashboard instruments. Make sure your arms are slightly bent. Your legs should be slightly bent too when your feet are on the pedals. The back of the seat should be fairly upright giving you a good view of the road ahead, mirrors, display and dials. Ensure that head restraints are adjusted so that they align with the top of you head. If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer, you‘ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 020 8996 9600 Safe Driving. Sprotbrough Road Community Church (Methodist)

The Family Table Once again I think of how good it is to share our tables. This week it was Coffee Cup Corner at my home. We didn‘t actually sit at the table, but being together felt the same. Sharing a drink a biscuit or two and of course the discussions. How amazing the diversity of conversation can be. Fellowship is WONDERFUL. Sometimes our talk turns to the blessings that God has given us, so He is with us as well. Next week I will be sitting at another table, this time in Lancashire; no boos or hisses please. I have a friend who has three indoor cats and each year I look after them while she‘s on holiday. It‘s an enjoyable and restful week for me, I take my knitting and a good book, (this time it‘s an old book by Taylor Caldwell on the life of St. Paul, The Lion of God). This turns my thoughts to how soon, we‘ll be giving thanks at our LORD‘S TABLE, as we celebrate Harvest. The farmers will have their crops in and those of us who are gardeners will be enjoying the fruit and vegetables. The aromas around the house tickle the taste buds, as jams and pickles are made from our produce, to share with others at their tables. Come and help us to be truly thankful for all the bounty that God provides. We enjoy the company as much as the sustenance we get for our bodies and our souls, as we share with God and with other people. Let our tables feel the weight of sharing, especially with people who live alone and feel alone. Let‘s all sing the harvest songs praising God and Jesus for everything we receive from them, and let the Holy Spirit fill our hearts and our lives with more than enough love, to share with the people around us. God Bless you all. See you next month

Jean Scott
