Editor’s Letter…

Welcome to the April issue of the Arrow. To help you get in the mood for Easter and Spring, Sprotbrough’s WI will be holding their annual Spring Fayre at St Mary’s in Sprotbrough on Saturday 5th April. You will hopefully receive your magazine before Mothers Day, if so ‘Happy Mothers Day to all you well deserving Mums’. If you are looking for something a bit different, how about membership to the Ramblers? The Ramblers organisation offer thousands of routes throughout the country for walking, a great opportunity to spend some time with your Mum with routes ranging in ability. It’s great to see what is happening in our local Primary Schools so thank you to all the Head teachers for the articles that have been submitted this month. April is my favourite month (so long as Easter is in it) all that chocolate :) Happy Easter everyone!

The deadline for the May issue for advertising and articles is Wednesday 9th April. The May Arrow will be delivered the last weekend in April.

Happy Easter Michelle Sidebottom

Caroline with Jim Beachill, Barbara Beachill and John Gwatkin. Don Valley MP Caroline Flint was the honoured guest at a sneak preview of an exhibition about 400 local men and boys from Conisbrough & Denaby Main involved in World War One. Said Caroline “Jim and Barbara Beachill and John Gwatkin deserve huge credit for an exhibition that touches the lives of hundreds of local families. 340 men and boys from Conisbrough & Denaby Main fought in the Great War and did not return. This exhibition brings their stories to life. It is full of remarkable and sad accounts. “These men were plunged into a great conflict just two years after the Cadeby Main disaster had taken 91 lives. Little did they know that this community would lose 340 more in such a short space of time.” Said Jim Beachill of the Conisbrough & Denaby Main Local History Group: “It was great that Caroline could spend time to see the preview of this important exhibition and there is already interests from local schools. The preview of the Great War week on Friday gave visitors an insight to the depth of information to be revealed to visitors during the Great War Week from March 15th to March 22nd.”

4

Two of the twelve exhibition displays were on view, each containing numerous photos and stories of people from Conisbrough and Denaby who lived and died during the World Wide conflict. The other displays being constructed will take the number of stories and photographs to over 400. As well as the detailed information about the Great War there will be a snapshot of the history of the villages of Conisbrough and Denaby Main including amongst other items the Cadeby disaster and ‘Bagmuck’ strike. Visitors can also see a diorama depicting Laurence Calvert’s bravery in winning his V.C., together with other models from the period, memorabilia and medals. The computers in the library have now been linked to the local history website with over 3,400 pages of information of the extraordinary history of Conisbrough and Denaby Main. The week will feature a quiz for schoolchildren who visit with a prize of replica memorabilia from 100 years ago to children who complete the quiz. The depth of information to be provided on display during the Great War week promises to provide visitors during the week a unique insight into the lives and events of local people 100 years ago.

This year GreenThumb Doncaster West are celebrating their 10 year anniversary. Lee and Jayne started GreenThumb Doncaster West franchise back in March 2004. They had seen the impressive results of the GreenThumb treatment at a relatives garden in Cheshire. After making enquiries they found there wasn’t a branch where they lived in Doncaster and so ended up buying a franchise. Ten years on they are still here and now employ 4 lawn treatment operatives and treat over 3000 lawns in and around the Doncaster area. They have built their business on giving good customer service and carrying out the work in a professional manner. This has worked extremely well and they still get many new customers each year from the recommendations of their existing customers. Lee says “We know that the GreenThumb treatments work well and give good results, however we always say it is a partnership between us and the customer – we can apply the treatments but it is then down to the customer to look after their lawn with regular cutting (not too short!) and watering if the weather is dry”. If you would like a quote from GreenThumb, please contact them on 01302 886 551 or use the Freephone number 0800 0111 222 and they will arrange a convenient time for you to call out and assess your lawn.

School News from

Copley Junior School Well done to our Copley pupils! At Copley Junior we have some very resourceful pupils, who love to organise and lead activities, showing a huge amount of initiative! Well done to Alistair, Amaan and Kellan who organised a Diabetes Day in school, to raise awareness and raise funds for research into the condition. The boys prepared a presentation about diabetes and a dress up day in the charity colours. Altogether they raised £337.44! Well done also to Fay and her management team of pupils who organised a fun run at Cusworth Hall Park in support of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, planning every detail on their own. Fay and her team organised medals for all participants, prizes for the best dressed runner (well done to Kaden, who must have got very hot running around Cusworth Hall Park dressed as Harry Potter!) and most helpful donation. A fund raiser from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance joined our Monday assembly to tell the children about the life saving work of the charity and Fay presented a cheque for £639! Well done to all our pupils who have both led and supported the fund raising activities. We are very proud of you! Mrs Crayton

China Week During the last week of Spring half term, we explored some fascinating Chinese culture and customs to celebrate and strengthen our link with Zhongshanlu Primary School in Dalian. Each class used items and photographs that I brought back from my visit. These formed starting points for writing in English and in Chinese, philosophical discussion, art works of statues and bamboo, geography, culture study and research.

Students at Zhongshanlu Primary undertaking their morning exercises

Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements

In China, morning exercises involve the whole school in grid formation doing a movement pattern designed to exercise the part of the brain used in mental maths and logic. Y3 studied this sequence and created a Copley version, filmed a training movie and taught the sequence to the rest of school. We performed it on the playground to the rousing ‘Pomp and Circumstance’. Morning exercises at Copley Junior Y3 worked with Mrs Gibbons (our volunteer helper) to write a New Year greeting ‘Everything is good’ in mandarin with brushes and black ink on Chinese handwriting paper. Mrs Gibbons kindly wrote all the Copley children’s’ names in mandarin which was a wonderful surprise! Our school cook, Mrs Wright, joined in with taster plates for the whole school. She prepared spring rolls, egg fried rice, noodles with oriental vegetables and a ginger drink. There was overwhelming consensus that you either love or hate the ginger drink! The finale to China week 2014 was a visit from dance teacher Nicky (from Cre8tive Dance). She taught every year group a different Chinese style dance involving fans and ribbons. The dances also featured Hong (red) and Huang (yellow) our resident lions who had had a special brush up for the occasion. Thank you to PTA for funding this fantastic experience.

I will be sending a CD of our work from China week to Zhongshanlu. Thank you to Copley staff for their commitment and support throughout each stage of bringing this exciting and enriching experience to our children. Well done to our wonderful children who embraced China week with enthusiasm and interest as well as some disbelief that in China the school day ends with the eldest children mopping and cleaning the school! It really does, but we didn’t go that far …not this time anyway!!! Mrs Adams

Spend some time with your Mum This Mothers Day

F

ed up with flowers and chocolates as the usual choice for Mother’s Day gifts? Are you looking for something a bit different? Something with a bit more meaning….

Some routes to try out

As we all know, spending quality time with Mum is normally an occasional treat, a chat over coffee and cake or maybe Sunday Lunch. When it comes to Mothers Day we look to buy a little something to show our appreciation. The Ramblers is encouraging people to treat their Mum to a stroll in the great out doors.

Rossington (Member only Route) 12.8 km—8 Miles Rating—Easy

What ever your thing, whether it be a gentle stroll taking in the scenery or a more challenging trek, the time spent with your Mum will become a treasured memory. I remember the first (and last) time I climbed a mountain I was with my Mum. It was also her first climb and although we did not have to scramble on all fours, the sense of achievement was amazing and to have shared that moment was very special. The scenery was breath taking and the picnic was guilt free! No matter what your Mum’s fitness level, there is sure to be a route which suits her ability as they all come with a difficulty rating. There is lots of information about the routes so you can check out which walk would be best before venturing out. This can of course be done for free as the Ramblers website offers many routes free of charge, or you can purchase a membership for your Mum which opens up over 45,000 group led walks every year, full access to Ramblers routes, quarterly editions of Walk magazine and more. For details, visit www.ramblers.org.uk/gift

10

Heron Way

A lovely walk to the west of Rossington using little used footpaths, tracks and very minor roads. The route passes Stancil, now a single farm but previously the site of a Roman Villa and later a fairly extensive farming community.

Sheffield

Norfolk Heritage Trail and Skye Edge Fields (Free) 5.6km—3.4 Miles Rating Leisurely A walk from Sheffield Interchange along part of the Norfolk Heritage Trail. Climbing up from the City Centre, it takes in the iconic Park Hill Flats, The Cholera Monument, Norfolk Park, Manor Lodge and Skye Edge Fields. A walk with glorious views.

Warmsworth Ladies’ Club Next year Warmsworth Ladies’ Club will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. So why not be part of our ongoing success and join us at Warmsworth Community Centre, Low Road. We have speakers, social evenings, outings and time for tea and a chat every Tuesday from 7-9pm during term time. Look forward to seeing you!

CHARITY APPEALS FOR ‘HOSTS WITH THE MOST’ TO HELP TRANSFORM THE LIVES OF LONELY ELDERLY PEOPLE IN DONCASTER

Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is appealing for volunteers in Doncaster willing to welcome a small group into their home for a tea party, just one or two afternoons a year.

The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone, by organising free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local communities. Each older guest is taken to the volunteer host’s home by a volunteer driver, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship for a couple of hours. The monthly gatherings exist as a vital lifeline of friendship for the charity’s older guests, however, the regular outings for the popular group in Doncaster are currently under threat due to a lack of volunteers able to host the tea parties. Contact the Elderly’s North and Midlands Executive Officer, Mary Robinson, said: “The charity is committed to offering a lifeline of friendship to the oldest and loneliest people, but this lifeline in Doncaster is currently under threat due to a real shortage of volunteer hosts in the area. Being a host requires a commitment of just a couple of hours, once or twice a year, and anyone who has a downstairs toilet, easy access to their home and a decent sized teapot is eligible! Our volunteers genuinely get as much out of the experience as our older guests, so I’m calling for anyone who is interested in giving something back to their community to please get in touch with me as soon as possible.” Doncaster residents interested in becoming a volunteer host for Contact the Elderly once or twice a year can contact Mary Robinson, North and Midlands Executive Officer on 01535 632 592 or email mary.robinson@contact-the-elderly.org.uk
