Community News

Sprotbrough Post Office

closed on Saturday 10th May 2014, with the retirement of Sub postmaster John Hardwick, who has provided the village with an excellent service for 44 years, having succeeded his mother in the role. The closure therefore brings to an end a long family association with this important village institution. John and his wife Jenny hosted a small celebration of their retirement in the post office on 10th May, attended by some 40 local residents. John and Jenny will continue to live in Sprotbrough, and may be seen in future zooming around on their new motorbike!

Local post office gets a life line thanks to local businessmen Sprotbrough Post office closed on 10th May. The nearest post office branch is in Warmsworth which isn’t easily accessible for many residents leaving them without access to a post office service. In response to the closure local businessmen Daniel Munro and Richard Davis are working to relocate the post office within Sprotbrough news. Just across from where the post office currently is. Daniel commented “being from Sprotbrough ourselves we understand how important a branch of the post office is and how heavily a lot of local residents rely on such a service. We are working hard to relocate the post

Community News office to make sure people in the village keep a much needed service. An application has been put forward to the post office to move the branch and things are underway and the post office are busy processing the application. In the meantime, Daniel and Richard have clubbed together to provide a shuttle bus service that will help local residents access a post office service in the interim period. The shuttle bus will take residents from the Village to Edlington post office. The service will run every Monday and Thursday and will depart from Sprotbrough news at 9, 10 and 11 am. To book a place on to the shuttle bus residents can call 01709 850293. Thomas Waddoups who, on the application is to be the new village post master added “we want the transition of the post office to go as smoothly as possible without people in the village having a period without access to a service. We want to keep a sense of community and keep the village as it is, something that we all feel very strongly about. We hope in the meantime that the shuttle bus can be something people can rely on.

Hannah Miller from Sprotbrough plans to run the Race for Life with her team the HaMonicas for the third year running on Sunday 29th June in Doncaster. Hannah was only 14 when she lost her Mum and has recently turned 16. After losing her Mum, Hannah dedicated her time to raising funds for Cancer Research and formed a team called the HaMonicas who have now raised thousands of pounds. The HaMonicas have already raised nearly £1,000 for the Doncaster Race for life, if you would like to support Hannah and her teammates please visit http://www.justgiving.com/the-hamonicas your donations will be appreciated.

Community News Another Celebration?

Seven weeks after Easter, Christians have another celebration – Pentecost or Whitsun – and this is the third of the main festivals in the church’s year. To mark this occasion this year, Churches Together in Sprotbrough are holding a great Pentecost party in the grounds of St Mary’s Church at 3pm to 4pm on Sunday 8 June. There will be singing, readings, activities and as a special attraction a performance by Micah’s Gang, a team of puppeteers from Woodlands. They made a recent appearance at Richmond Hill School and were a great hit with the children. So this celebration is geared to the whole family, children and all. And what will people be celebrating? The coming of God’s Holy Spirit that enables Christians to go out and share their faith. You can join in, whatever you believe. Balloons will be used to represent the release of the Spirit, and the afternoon should be enormous fun. Make a point of coming.

Gymnastics Success! Copley takes to the floor at the British Gymnastics Final

Miss Hull leads our successful Gym Club. In March our gym team took part in the Yorkshire Championships, competing against school groups and gym clubs from across Doncaster, Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham. We were delighted that our team won and were announced as the Yorkshire Champions! We then competed in the British Gymnastics Finals… ‘On Sunday 11th May, Copley’s gymnastics team competed at Fenton Manor, Stoke on Trent for the British Finals. We gave our best performance with 100% effort. In the end, we were awarded a score of 7.3 and we came 10th in the country. Although the standards were very high, and even higher than last year, we were all quite happy because we won the Yorkshire Championships making us the best in Yorkshire! We all loved it!’ By Abbie and Lucy, team members

EXCITING FIND AT LOCAL INFANT SCHOOL

On Tuesday 29th April the staff and children at Orchard Infant School, Sprotbrough, had an ‘eggstra’ ordinary occurrence! During morning play me the children discovered a giant egg had appeared under the horse chestnut tree in the school playground! The area was quickly cordoned off and the surrounding area inves gated by the children who were busy looking for clues. Following the discovery the children have been busy wri ng newspaper reports about the egg, making posters, drawing pictures

and wri ng down their ideas of what could be inside. Some of the sugges ons have included: elephant bird, dinosaur, gigan c ostrich, an alligator or even an alien! A er careful observa on during the week the staff decided to move the egg into the school quad for safekeeping over the Bank holiday weekend. It has since been moved back to its original loca on where the egg remains under close surveillance to see what might happen
