Editor’s Letter...
Summer is here, quick; get the bbq out, it has got to be a good one, Mother Nature owes us!! This year’s annual Family Gala and Road Race has a welcome newcomer with a morning cycle race! Check out the news page for more details and good luck to everyone either cycling or running. I was shocked to hear the sad news of Alastair Grave’s death earlier this year. Alastair was a Scout leader and very involved in the organisation of this event. I am sure there will be lots of people running with Alastair and in his family in mind. The deadline for the July issue for advertising and articles is Wednesday 19th June. The June Arrow will be delivered from Friday 28th June 2013!

News, News, News, News, News, News.. Annual Scout Gala and Road Race Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June
Welcome to the annual family gala and road race! We hope that our link with the Doncaster Wheelers group that have organised a cycle race on the morning of the Gala will be mutually supportive and encouraging. The winning cyclists will be announced at the beginning of the gala afternoon. We anticipate continued spectacular community support and participation in both the road race and the gala itself. We are joined again by ‘Military Fitness prior to the race to ‘warm up’ and ‘cool down’ at the end of the 6.5 Km. We also welcome some new and regular support from stall holders, including Archery from the Armthorpe Archers group and the chance to watch and perhaps join in some Scottish country dancing. All the funds we raise do go back into ‘scouting ‘here in Sprotbrough which enables our young people to participate in a range of activities- orienteering, canoeing, camping, national navigation schemes, cooking competitions, sporting competitions. These activities facilitate confidence and team leadership qualities equipping young people for life. Thanks must go to the local businesses, family and friends who provide the support and finance, where necessary which makes our role so much easier to complete for this event. Family participation is very important and valued in the Scout movement and this event would not be able to succeed without the whole ‘Scout family’. As with all families , we gain valuable members and sadly we lose some as well… and for me personally this year will be somewhat sad and very different. Alastair , my husband who was also a Beaver Leader and an integral part of the Team planning and executing this gala event since he became involved in Scouts some 12 years ago, sadly lost his life to a brain tumour in April 2013. The love and support we have received from the community in recognition of him and the part he has played, has been overwhelming and it is this community love and warmth that will enable us all to continue to move forward and continue to provide a great community event for all. And so finally…. if you are reading this for the first time and have never been along to the Gala, it is a community and family event not to be missed! If you have participated in previous years, ‘thank you once again’ and we hope you have an enjoyable afternoon, whether you are aiming for the ‘bull’s eye or running the race, or settling for a pint and listening to the band. There is something for all the family. Anyone who wishes to register to enter the race can do so on line via our website, but you can still register on the day. Hope to see you there! Janet Graves, on behalf of the Scout Supporters Group

SoulSpace
Are you 13-16 Years old and live in or near Sprotbrough? A new project is designed for you by 13-16 year olds. 42 youth and volunteers met at Woodlands Church on Sunday 21st of April at 5 o’clock for a two-hours session of activities organised and run by a group of young people. Those who gathered were welcomed by a pile of biscuits with tea, coffee or squash , but they could all see through the serving hatch an appetising set of desirable eatables for later on. Bang on five, the youth band by the way (percussion, violin, vocalists and keyboard) struck up with Wherever you will go (The Calling) followed by Titanium (David Guetta feat, Sia), which had accompanying words projected on a screen with lively pictures. This was followed by a team competition – Can you trust a friend?- hosted by a lively and impertinent young quiz master. The countdowns and the contortions of the competitors had the whole church roaring with laughter. Appropriately this was followed by by the way again, whose rendering of Don’t you worry child (Swedish House Mafia) encouraged most of those present to join in with a will. Another young host then asked all 42 of us questions about what made up friendship, and caused us all to think hard about it. This too had a set of projected illustrations. A teenage stand-up comedian then put on an act that warned current favourites that they must look to their laurels. Each appalling joke was followed by a crash on a snare-drum – very loud if the joke was really groanworthy. Then there came the interval when the food was consumed with enthusiasm. One helper said he had never seen four large pizzas vanish so rapidly; and the wraps with a variety of fillings (all chosen by the young
organisers) certainly equalled them in their speed of disappearing. In the second half there was more music (Ho Hey (The Lumineers )and Use Somebody (Kings of Leon)),some magic tricks, and there was a pulling together of the themes of the evening – that Jesus was a friend that you can rely on, and that he can do miraculous things in your life. This theme and future ones will reflect current attitudes and trends of society and encourage the young people who come to think about and express their view points, and explore Christian approaches to these issues. SoulSpace is planned for every 3rd Sunday of the month at between 5 and 7pm in Woodlands Church. The next two are 19th May and 16th June. If you want to come, try contacting your local church about lifts to Woodlands. Or just turn up – it’s on a bus route.
Warmsworth & Edlington Lions Club are holding their annual judging of their photographic competition. This is from Schools & Groups in the area, with ages ranging from 8 - 11 years of age. The judging will be held at the Yorkshire Main Community Centre on Friday 7th June from 5pm to 6.30pm. All welcome. Tea's, Coffee's and Biscuit's will be available. Tom Kelly, Lion President
