Editor’s Letter...

Although we were off to a very cold start, what a relief it was to find some warmth in April! The Daffodils were in bloom and buds started to flourish at long last! The Sprotbrough Local Community Library, which is now run by volunteers has many courses on offer. All the courses are listed in this month’s Arrow and contact details are provided for anyone interested in learning a new skill/practice or brushing up on an old one! We are approaching Summer fayre time, if anyone has an event they would like promoted through the Arrow, please let me have the information before the deadline date below. The deadline for the June issue for advertising and articles is Wednesday 15th May. The June Arrow will be delivered from Friday 24th May 2013!

Sprotbrough Community Library

has recently celebrated its first full year as a volunteer-run library. After DMBC terminated the employment of the paid librarians, the running of the library became the responsibility of a group of local volunteers who formed a new company specifically for this purpose. The library has been kept open for business six days a week, and all the work is undertaken by unpaid volunteers, with an average of 45 volunteers helping each week. Customers have been very grateful for the efforts made to keep the library open. A key part of the philosophy for the new company has been to develop the library as an important local community centre. There has been a significant increase in the number of courses and groups on offer, and these have been very well attended. Part of the upstairs library has been dedicated as a permanent exhibition area, and already there have been five exhibitions. This is an excellent facility for local groups to use to connect with the public, and to increase interest and awareness in their activities. There has been great support from various sources – DMBC Central Libraries department, the Parish Council, the Friends of Sprotbrough Library, and of course the local public. A generous donation was received from the Sprotbrough Gardeners Association. This is an excellent library, and the volunteers would be delighted to welcome new customers. New volunteers would also be very welcome. This is a great opportunity to learn new skills (full training is provided), to work with a very friendly team of volunteers, and to provide an invaluable service for the local community.
