elcome to the April issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow. I hope everyone enjoyed Mother’s Day’s, however, I have a small complaint if I may? To all those Mums out there, did you think it was a bit unfair the clocks springing forward an hour? One less hour to be pampered… conspiracy I say! All joking aside, I really do welcome the lighter evenings, it makes walking the dog more fun and it’s great to see our young people getting out and enjoying our villages. Thank you to all the local primary schools for once again sharing school life with us. It’s such a delight to read about what our young people are getting up to in school. As well as YWP, Doncaster’s biggest tourist attraction, we have lots of ideas to keep you and your family busy over the Easter holiday, lets hope the sun shines so we can all get out and enjoy our fabulous villages and what they have to offer, whether that’s a walk to the park, along the river or down to your favourite local. The deadline for the May issue will be Wednesday 19th April. The Arrow will be delivered the last full weekend in April. Arthur’s many lives Perhaps it is true that cats have nine lives – take the case of Arthur who was brought to his local RSPCA Animal Centre in November with a mysterious head wound. The RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre at Bawtry has its own clinic for rescue pets, thanks to a generous local legacy, and so Arthur received immediate treatment. Tests were completed by the clinic vet and special medication was provided. Arthur’s wound began to improve but he was still struggling. Once the head wound had healed it was possible to do further examinations and the vet discovered Arthur had a fractured skull, so it was more medication and very careful management by the trained staff at the Centre. Amazingly, despite the head wound and the fractured skull, Arthur made a full recovery. Never once, throughout the treatment, did Arthur complain – in fact his loving and trusting nature won many friends. He loves people and now he follows the staff around during the morning clean. Without a full history and not knowing the cause of his extensive injuries, we will never know how many lives Arthur has used up, but there is definitely at least one more to follow – when someone adopts Arthur and gives him a loving forever home. ‘We never give up on animals,’ said Animal Care Manager Laura Bullock. ‘Our clinic and our expert care team, backed up by brilliant volunteers, has resulted in us becoming one of the top re-homing centres for the RSPCA in the north of England.’ Of course this care comes at a cost, and the Centre receives no Government or lottery money. You can help by bringing in unwanted clothes, toys, bedding, curtains, books and bric a brac (phone 01302 719790 if you need it collecting); or make a mobile donation – text SYAC14 £5 to 70070. You can also support the Centre’s new enlarged Pet Store. Keep up to date with local RSPCA news at www.facebook.com/rscpadrb. The Centre is open six days a week 11am to 4pm (closed Wednesdays). For more information about volunteering, email info@rspcadrb.org.uk.

Harmonious Harmonicas There’s much excitement in Year 1, as harmonica lessons are underway! Pupils will learn the basics of harmonica in class with their teacher, eventually learning a song to perform for us all later in the year. We can’t wait to hear the results. Barney & Echo Internet Safety Roadshow A group of Y6 pupils were lucky enough to attend an Internet Safety Roadshow at Keepmoat Stadium to learn all about keeping themselves and others safe online. After learning lots and taking part in many different activities, the pupils will be planning a presentation to show us all what they’ve learned.

World Book Day Pupils celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as their favourite book characters and bringing their favourite books to school with them. We had all sorts, from Oompa Loompas to the Boy in the Dress, everyone put in a fantastic amount of effort. Year 6 even had a Harry Potter inspired Potions lesson, complete with cauldrons and robes!

Sprotbrough Orchard News
During the week commencing Monday 27th February, all classes spent half a day at the local Tesco Extra in Balby. This was to learn about healthy eating and tie in with our centre of interest for this half term: Food. All children enjoyed an engaging and practical experience where they we given a full tour of Tesco including viewing the unloading areas and they also had the opportunity to make their own muesli and taste different healthy snack options! As a result of this, children have since produced some fantastic written work about their trip and artwork of fruits and vegetables. Sam and Sammy came into school on Tuesday 7th March to talk to the children, during assembly time, about the importance of school attendance and being punctual. Each week classes are ranked in attendance levels, with the highest attendees being awarded with the attendance trophy. They came back on Friday 17th March to do a meet and greet with children and parents and gave stickers out.

We have been busy creating new reading areas for our children to enjoy books for pleasure during their ‘free choice’ time. Nursery now have a fabulous new willow den outside to enjoy reading in the outdoors, Reception have new bean bags, Year One have got some great new reading tepees and Year Two have been kitted out with comfortable cushions to make the spaces more user friendly. Additionally, the role play areas have been upgraded. To link with our centre of interest, Reception and Year One have created Café role play areas for children to link their curriculum work, including paying and giving change, reading menus and developing their speaking and listening skills. Year One children went to a gymnastics festival on Thursday 9th March at Dearne Valley Leisure Centre in Denaby. There, they were actively involved in paired balances and ribbon dance routines. Sarah Belk from Active Fusion also came during week commencing Monday 13th March to work with all children in their dance lessons. They applied their skills to develop jumping and stillness work with music and travelling around their space. Sadly, after 22 years dedication to our school, Marilyn Tuck our well esteemed cleaner retired on Friday 17th March. She decided to down her tabard for the last time and we as a staff celebrated with her over tea and cake and a trip to the Lyceum theatre. Marilyn will be hugely missed as she played such a crucial role within our team. We wish her all the best of luck and a long and happy retirement!

School News from Copley Junior School World Book Day We are keen to promote interest and enjoyment in reading at Copley Junior and, as always, we were delighted to see the children’s enthusiastic response to our World Book Day activities. We chose the theme of ‘Magic’ to celebrate World Book Day and children (and staff!) were invited to come to school dressed as a magical character from a book. Can you guess the book titles from the costumes the children are wearing in the photographs below?

Book Swap On World Book Day all the children who brought a book for our swap event were invited to select a new title to take home. The children thoroughly enjoyed browsing and choosing, and it was made all the more enjoyable as there were so many titles to choose from.

Book Reward Assemblies Well done to our winners in each class who were entered in the half termly class draw as a reward for reading regularly at home. Our lucky winners chose a brand new book from a wide range of titles. New Books For our ‘Magic’ World Book Day we purchased a range of new fiction and non fiction texts, all with the theme of magic. The children have really enjoyed reading the new titles. This display features creative writing by Year 3 children based on ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ by C. Duffy.

This gorgeous boy is Zeus, a 2-3 year old Whippet Cross who has been looking for his new home for a while now. Zeus is a lovely, friendly, affectionate boy who loves people and would make a great family pet. He is ok with most other dogs but not cats, and would need a fairly active home with lots of nice walks and toys! If you are interested in meeting Zeus, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At our meeting on 6 March our speaker was Keith Whatlin. This was his second visit to us in the last few months, and he continued from where he had left off with his story of the History of English Architecture. We started with Gainsborough Hall which is an example of a residential building built mainly of brick, a return to the method used by the Romans one and a half millennia previously. It also has large windows which were back in favour because people did not fell the need to live in fortified buildings any more. Keith talked about the influence that the Greeks had on our architecture (much via the Romans) such as Doric, Ionic and Corinthian supporting columns in buildings and other architectural features. He also featured Hardwick Hall (both the old ruined hall and the newer on which is the current visitor attraction) in his examples and photographs. Later in the month, on the 20th, our old friend Pat McLaughlin continued the historical theme when he spoke to us about “Signs, Symbols and Secrets. Our Spring Ladies Lunch took place at Ye Old Bell at Barmby Dun on Thursday 23 March when over seventy members and Guests enjoyed a fine social occasion. Any interested men who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Geoff Firth (01302 849734), David Allen (01302 885813 or John Gregory (01302 532032) for more information.
