Welcome
to the April issue of the
Sprotbrough Arrow
The nights are getting lighter and the weather has been somewhat brighter lately, what an exciting time of year this is, full of the promise of bright sunny mornings that fill us with motivation for the day and warm hazy evenings full of exercise, dog walks and alfresco dining. Not necessarily everyone's cup of tea, but however you spend your late spring/summer evenings, it’s so much nicer with milder temperatures and light. Plans are starting for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this June. We have an additional bank holiday this year so we now have 2nd and 3rd of June as bank holidays giving us a long weekend of celebrations. Each village has their own plans and If you want to get involved or have ideas, please share them with your Parish Council. The May issue deadline is Wednesday 13th April. The magazines will be delivered the last full weekend in April. Happy Easter Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk arrowpublications.co.uk

Well ‘World Book Day’ at Richmond Hill was an amazing event this year. Not only did we see our children bringing to life their favourite book characters, but we shared some wonderful stories throughout the day.

Our visit to Austerfield Year 1 have enjoyed their very first visit out of school this year and where better to investigate than Austerfield Study Centre. They have explored the Animal House, Minibeasts and Habitat Hunters, a great time was had by all. sow, Grow, Farm As part of science week and our 'Sow, Grow, Farm' topic, Year 5 have been planting seed potatoes. They have been learning about all the different ways plants reproduce and know that potatoes produce tubers rather than seeds. They are hoping to be able to harvest the first crop in late June/early July.
Sprotbrough Day of Action On Sprotbrough Day of Action our wonderful Year 4 children were out and about in the community undertaking a litter pick with staff and Clare Johnson from Doncaster community partnership. What a fabulous job they did. Star Pupils Our star pupils from the autumn term have been celebrated, all chosen for their contribution to the school CARE values of Collaboration Aspiration Resilience and Endeavour. We are so very proud of them all.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club based in Doncaster promotes fellowship and companionship for retired and semi-retired Professional, Business and Like-minded men and women who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Doncaster Town Fields Sports Club, Bennettorpe, Doncaster DN2 6AA starting at 10 am. This as a new venue, the Club having recently moved there from Town Moor Golf Club. On 21 February Bill Adey gave the first half of his presentation on the British Motor Industry. This was based on all the small motor car and commercial vehicle manufacturers who eventually became the British Leyland Conglomerate. So the great names of the past such as Wolsely, Riley, Austin and Morris, Standard and Trumph and many others were part of the fascinating story. Among lots of interesting material we learned how Small Sidecars of Blackpool eventually became Jaguar Cars. Then the next time, on 7 March Bill continued with stories of lots more well know companies from what some called the golden age of motoring. The Club held its Members’ and Guests lunch’, (formerly known as the Ladies’ and Guests’ Lunch} at the usual venue,Ye Olde Bell and Barmby Moor on Thursday 17 March. This was our first Springtime Lunch for three years, having missed the previous two because of lockdowns. Everybody was delighted to be back for a most enjoyable occasion, We are always pleased to see new people visiting us with a view to becoming a member. If you think that it might be for you, the please call David Allen (01302 885813 or 07395 128759) or email enquiries@danumprobus.co.uk or turn up on the day and introduce yourself to one of the officers on the front table. Long-Stay Animals Looking for a Second Chance at Happiness At the RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch, we are pleased to report a very successful adoption rate so far in 2022. However, our longer stay residents are still waiting to find their forever homes. These tend to be older animals who are notoriously harder to find homes for, but offering them a space in your heart ensures that they will spend their golden years in peace and comfort. Our older residents currently searching for their forever homes include Fern, a dog, and feline sister duo Mitzie & Mimi. Fern is an older lady looking for a cosy retirement home after spending most of her life outside. She came into our care alongside her friend who has just recently been rehomed – Fern however is still patiently waiting. Despite being 10 years old, she still has plenty of energy and loves nothing more than spending time in our paddock. We believe that Fern would benefit from a quieter home with older children so that she can bask in all the attention. Mitzie and Mimi came into our care through no fault of their own, after their previous owner’s circumstances changed. They are a very loving and affectionate pair who love fusses. They have quite a sassy nature so could make a great addition to your home, but they would need to be indoor-only cats. At our animal centre, we are finding that rabbits are taking a little longer to rehome. We have Floyd and Mystique & Morticia in particular who have taken a little longer than the others. We know that rabbits prove to be great pets, either to teach an early sense of responsibility to children or as family pets for those who appreciate a quieter, less hectic life.

Floyd is a neutered male rabbit who would appreciate another bunny friend to keep him company. He was found wandering around our car park but was ready to find his forever home after a few days of TLC. Sadly, he is still waiting after more than 3 months in our care. He is a lovely little boy who loves hopping around and exploring. He would make a perfect addition to a home with children over 12. Mystique and Morticia are a sister duo who are still on the lookout for their new home together after waiting more than 4 months. They could live with children as young as 8 as long as they are supervised until they become fully confident with handling. When one of our animals become available for adoption, they are posted on our website (https:// www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk/animals-for-adoption) and Facebook page. If you are interested in adopting an animal, please follow the process that is explained on our website. There are many ways to help RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch with our mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, donating cash or goods, leaving a legacy, sponsoring through our Safe Haven programme and attending events. We have charity shops at Bawtry, Maltby, Rossington and Thorne as well as eBay and Depop. At the Animal Centre, we rehabilitate and rehome the animals in our care and have a pet supplies store on site for all your requirements. We also provide a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. To donate £5, text ‘RSPCADRB’ to 70085.

St Mary’s Sprotbrough Mothers Union NEWS With Covid-19 restrictions ending and people feeling happier to socialise again, St Mary’s Mothers’ Union were thinking about reintroducing their annual Spring Fair. However, as it is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this year and the fact that the Queen is Patron of the Mothers’ Union, and has been for the past seventy years, it was thought that a Jubilee event was called for. So, Sprotbrough Branch are welcoming all to a Jubilee Cream Tea in the Church Hall, Sprotbrough on Tuesday 26th April from 2 - 4pm. There will be a raffle and stalls; including home-made cakes, plants, mystery gift and a chance to win the Royal Teddy! Tickets, £3.50 each, which include a cream tea, are on sale and available from Helen Harwood (01302 785240) or Issy Mears (01302 570431). Proceeds will go to Mothers’ Union AFIA (Away From It All) scheme. AFIA is a holiday scheme, primarily funded by MU members, to give the opportunity of a break to those who may be experiencing stress or difficulties in their family life. On average, MU helps 2,500 people to have a holiday each year. https://www.mothersunion.org/projects/ away-it-all

ORCHARD INFANT SCHOOL NEWS

Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements
The children at Orchard are enjoying the second part of Spring term and have fully engaged in our new centre of interest which is ‘Transport’. So far we have looked at how transport has changed over the years and enjoyed reading transport themed stories, a favourite being ‘Mrs Armitage on Wheels’ by Quentin Blake. The children in Year 2 have written their own version of the story where Mrs Armitage wears a suitably adapted pair of roller skates! Thursday 3rd March marked the 25th anniversary of World Book Day. As part of our activities this year the children enjoyed bringing a range of books to school that they could share with their peers – whilst sporting their favourite pyjamas/lounge wear! During the day, the children in Year 2 had the opportunity to try out their reading skills and selected a range of storybooks to read to some of the younger children in school. Both the children in Nursery and the Reception thoroughly enjoyed this experience and have asked when the Year 2’s will be coming back to do it again! Thank you to all those families that donated a book to school to mark the occasion – we have loved sharing some of these in class and are truly grateful for your generosity. We look forward to sharing more of Orchard’s news next month – this will include our support on Comic Relief Day, Friday 18th March.

DONCASTER RAMBLERS
A LOCAL WALK FROM FISHLAKE On a very blustery morning10 walkers gathered on the landing in Fishlake for a windswept 5 mile walk. Opting for a flood bank walk to reduce the mud experience that Fishlakes green lanes currently have due to recent rain the group headed towards Kirk Bramwith and walking on top of the flood bank it became apparent that the river Don was in flood mode however the large tracts of water made for some interest from some of our guests in including Teddy the Labrador The group consisted of 3 old hands from Tuesday walks and some new walkers covering the first mile about 30 mins everybody crossed Stainforth bridge and down onto the canal path which gave some relief from the constant westerly wind in our faces. Continuing along the canal path everbody made for Kirk Bramwith Bridge and time for Elevenses After a short break the route back was over Kirk Bramwith bridge and onto the public footpath along the river Don. Along this stretch the group was shown the original course of the Don pre 1947 which is now an oxbow lake before re crossing Stainforth Bridge and re tracing our steps back to Fishlake Distance 5mls Time taken 2hrs Stuart Twell
