Welcome to the April issue of The Sprotbrough Arrow.

Spring has sprung at last! Hurrah! The nights are getting lighter and what a wonderful feeling it brings. I hope everyone enjoyed Mother’s Day and had the chance to spoil or be spoilt! It’s great to see the local primary schools’ celebrating World Book Day after being delayed by the ‘Beast from the East’, (a title for a book if I ever saw one)! There were some fantastic outfits from the children. Well done everyone! Did you know, there are approx. 770,000 children in the UK who do not own one single book! A staggering statistic...let’s hope World Book Day continues to draw attention to the importance of reading books to young children so this figure can be reduced. The deadline for the May issue will be Wednesday 18th April. The May Arrow will be delivered by the last weekend in April.

Happy Easter Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 01302 534256 / 07795 387937 email: michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School This term our centre if interest is Transport. The children have been exploring different types of transport and learning about Road Safety. During the first week of term we have been looking at cars old and new. Our planned visit to the Parkgate Transport Museum had to be cancelled but local resident Mr Miller came to the rescue! The children had an unexpected treat when he very kindly brought a Penny Farthing and drove classic cars in to the school hall. Mr Miller talked to the Year 2 children about the special features of his cars and answered their questions. All year groups have enjoyed using the cars and Penny Farthing as a stimulus for their art work and writing over the spring term. Thank you Mr Miller. On Wednesday 21st of March Orchard Infant School is hosting a Quiz Night to raise funds to renovate the Year 1 Quad and develop the outdoor area. Reception and Year 2 parents Kerry Pye and Caroline Perkins have very kindly organised the special night of entertainment and are planning a fantastic transformation of the existing Quad. Local businesses have donated some amazing raffle and auction prizes. Orchard parents have sponsored resources for the children to enjoy and given their time to help sell raffle tickets. Thank you so much for your generosity and support for this event. What a brilliant way to end the spring term with fantastic attendance at the Easter disco. We had lots of fun and the children enjoyed dancing and playing games. On the last day of term Orchard will be having its very own Easter egg style hunt in the playground. The children will be searching for different coloured lollipop sticks and then in return they will enjoy a chocolate egg to take home for the school holidays.

School News from Copley Junior School

We are keen to promote interest and enjoyment in reading at Copley Junior and, as always, we were delighted to see the children’s enthusiastic response to our World Book Day activities. The children chose the theme of ‘Crime-Fighters’ to celebrate World Book Day and children (and staff!) were invited to come to school dressed as a crime-fighter featured in a fiction or non-fiction book. Can you guess the book titles from the costumes the children are wearing in the photographs below? Book Swap On World Book Day all the children who brought a book for our swap event were invited to select a new title to take home. The children thoroughly enjoyed browsing and choosing, and it was made all the more enjoyable as there were so many titles to choose from. Themed Reading Collection and Reading Challenge The children helped us choose 75 new ‘Crime-Fighters’ book titles which we displayed centrally for children to borrow and read. After just one week, the titles have been read 122 times so we are delighted by the enthusiastic response of the children. Our ‘Reading Challenge’ celebrates and rewards children’s success as they record their hours of reading.

Cross Country Success Many congratulations to our Year 3-4 cross country teams who competed in the county finals following their earlier success at the Doncaster Championships. On a decidedly chilly afternoon, our intrepid teams competed at the South Yorkshire Finals at Cannon Hall against 550 finalists from across Doncaster, Barnsley, Rotherham and Sheffield. This was a great opportunity for our pupils to compete at an elite event. We are so proud of all the children as they demonstrated great effort, stamina, enthusiasm and sporting behaviour. Our Year 3-4 boys came third in county, which is a fantastic achievement! We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton, Head teacher

Richmond Hill Primary School News Magnification Magic! This year, we were lucky enough to loan a class set of microscopes from the Royal Microscopical Society. The microscopes have been used across a variety of year groups in school and every pupil has used them with great enthusiasm and interest. We have learned about magnification and field of vision and have predicted, compared and contrasted what we can see with our eyes, a magnifying glass and the microscopes. We have enjoyed looking at a wide range of materials under the microscopes, including water droplets, newspaper samples, sand, coffee, foam, baby powder, sugar, herbs and even dead wasps! Our pupils have enjoyed the use of the microscopes so much that we have already applied to the RMS to loan them again for 2019!

Using Our Imagination After joining the Imagination Library Project - Supporting Parent Partnerships and Developing Reading with young children and their parents, we have been busy implementing ideas at Richmond Hill in Foundation. Since joining the project in February, children have shared a number of their Imagination Library books in class including ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’, which became our focus for this half term. The children are enthralled in the text and even got Fiona Cann, the programme leader, involved in their activities when she visited the school. Thanks to ideas from the project, we now have a book sharing morning happening once a week before school in Foundation, which has immediately been a huge success. Thank you to all the parents and carers who have been so far!

World Book Day Sponsored Read We recently took part in a sponsored read for World Book Day. Year 6 were partnered with Year 2 and took turns in reading to one another. Everyone involved had a really enjoyable time! The Year 2 and Year 6 teachers were really impressed with the genuine collaboration they saw from both year groups. Hill House Visit with Caryl Hart Our Foundation pupils had an exciting visit to Hill House School, as part of our ongoing partnership. Pupils had lots of fun with poems, stories and interactions with the author Caryl Hart over the visit! Thank you once again to • • Wallpaper Hanging Hill House for providing Specialist such a brilliant experience • • Emulsion & All for our pupils!
