Discover Doncaster’s heritage at this year’s Doncaster Heritage Festival,

Saturday 4 – Sunday 19 May 2019. The 2019 Doncaster Heritage Festival will be launched on Saturday with two fascinating talks – Helen Cox asking the question who was the rightful king, Edward IV or Richard III? And TV historian, Michael Wood, talks about Doncaster’s connection to the decisive Battle of Brunanburh in AD 937, which triggered the making of a united England. Other Doncaster-focussed highlights of the festival, include ‘An audience with Brian Blessed’, Doncaster’s heritage ambassador comes home to CAST recalling growing up here and filming ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ at Doncaster Archives. In 2017 Heritage Doncaster purchased the Conisbrough Court Rolls, 1265-1935, and we have two full days of related events including a number of talks about how you can get involved with the HLF funded project, an insight into the Manor courts and their evolution through time, entertainment from the Doncaster Waites and many free events are being held throughout Conisbrough and Denaby Main. Doncaster Market Place sees the start of the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire and to celebrate Doncaster’s cycling history, local broadcaster and author, Chris Sidwells talks about Doncaster’s cycling legends including Tom Simpson, a local lad who was the first Englishman to wear the yellow jersey. The festival has an exciting programme made up of a series of enthralling talks, workshops, walks and events that explore the history of the borough and beyond. Events will be at a variety of different venues and location from morning to evening, so why not discover something new?

The festival is organised by Heritage Doncaster and is supported by heritage groups across Doncaster for the enjoyment of all. For full event details visit us online at www.heritagedoncaster.org.uk/festival or contact: Doncaster Local Studies call 01302 734307

New Christmas Tree for Sprotbrough Christmas Lights

Local company Brittains Beverages has sponsored a new large Christmas Tree for the green in Sprotbrough. Director, John Raper along with Kelly Hall, Operations Co-ordinator for Brittains are seen here on the green at Sprotbrough presenting a cheque for £1000.00 to Carol Rees of Sprotbrough Christmas Lights. Brittains came forward with their kind offer in response to comments made following year’s switch-on. Everyone enjoyed the wonderful event but many were disappointed with the tree and believed that Sprotbrough deserved a “proper” and larger tree! Brittains sponsorship will provide a cut eighteen foot tree for a three year period, with the first being in place for this year’s community switchon taking place at 5.30pm on 30th November 2019.

Photo: Carol Rees (centre) accepts the presentation cheque from John Raper and Kelly Hall of Brittains Issued by David Mears on behalf of Sprotbrough Christmas Lights Contact: DaveJMears@gmail.com. Mobile: 07767 880362

Carol Rees commented: “We are absolutely delighted with Brittains sponsorship. This means that Sprotbrough will now have the tree it deserves! It will make so much difference to the village centre this and in subsequent years over the festive season” Sprotbrough Christmas Lights plans to make this year’s event bigger and better with even more lights on and around the new tree.

DEARNE VALLEY WALKING GROUP ANNOUNCE DEARNE VALLEY WALKING FESTIVAL 2019 To celebrate their tenth year of existence, Dearne Valley Walking Group are pleased to announce that they are holding a week-long walking festival, starting on Saturday 13th April and finishing on Saturday 20th April. The walking festival will comprise of a series of eight walks across the Dearne Valley area, all of which will be led by experienced members of the group. The walks have been selected to celebrate the splendour of the Dearne Valley, which although once one of Europe’s most industrialised areas, still has many unspoilt areas of natural beauty and rich heritage. The official festival opening will be conducted by the Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor Steve Green, prior to the first walk on Saturday 13th April and the festival will conclude on Saturday April 20th 2019 with a social evening to celebrate the achievements of all the participants, young and old. Following the festival opening, the first walk will be a 6-mile Darfield Boundary Walk at 11am on Saturday 13th April. This will be followed on Sunday 14th April with a 4.1 mile Sprotbrough and Cusworth Circular Walk, also at 11am and on Monday 15th April it is a 1pm start for a 5 mile Hooton Pagnell Walk. Tuesday 16th April sees the first evening walk with a 4 mile Pottery Ponds & Roman Ridge Walk in Swinton which starts t 6.15pm and on Wednesday 17th April it’s a 6.2 mile Three Reservoirs Walk from Ingbirchworth which starts at 1pm. On Thursday 18th April there is a 4.5 mile walk from Conisbrough Station at 6.30pm whilst on Friday 19th April it’s a 12 noon start for a 6.5 mile Wentworth Classic Walk. The Festival concludes on Saturday 20th April with a 4.5 mile Rockley Blast Furnace Walk from Worsbrough Village at 3pm which is followed by a Celebratory meal at the Edmunds Arms at 6pm. Our Group is open to everyone to attend with no membership fees to be paid, so anyone and

everyone is welcome to join any of the walks during the course of the festival week. All we ask is that each adult donates £1 to participate in each individual walk, with accompanied children walking free of charge. For the more enthusiastic participants, a season ticket for all walks and the closing social evening can be obtained for a donation of a mere £14, which includes a meal at the social evening. Participant numbers, however, do have to be limited and places can be secured with online donation via the festival website. Dearne Valley Walking Group is a not-for-profit organisation and the festival is being held in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance charity - Registered Charity No. 1084305. Dearne Valley Walking Group was formed in the Barnsley area of South Yorkshire in April 2009 and has since grown into a thriving independent walking group which is open to everyone, with around 100 active participants, hailing from the surrounding areas of Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. We walk mainly in South Yorkshire and the Peak District throughout the year. We encourage everyone to take up a healthier lifestyle and many of our walks are family friendly, as well as some that are more challenging for the experienced walker. Doncaster Rambler’s "To Be A Pilgrim"

Tuesday 19th March - It was a short journey down the Great North Road to our starting point at Daneshill Lakes, near Torworth. After a briefing from our leaders Chris and Sue, 41 of us set off through the woods and lakes and initially alongside the busy E.Coast rail line. After heading north for a mile or so we turned west, passing through the village of Ranskill to our coffee stop at Roman Bank Earthwork on the edge of Serlby Golf Club. From here we continued north towards our lunchtime stop at The Pilgrim Fathers in Scrooby. How nice to be welcomed with broad smiles, willing staff and the use of the beer garden for our picnics. Given our numbers, the service was also very efficient. Our afternoon journey took us in an easterly direction to Mattersey Grange before heading south along tracks and through woodland back to Daneshill Lakes. Everyone enjoyed this very pleasant spring walk helped by the much improved weather conditions with few coats being worn for a change. Today's highlight - bog-hopping across a field after lunch! Thanks, Sue and Chris, for planning and leading this most enjoyable day out and to Keith, our ever-reliable backmarker. Ranskill The village dates back to the Danish invasions of the 9th century where the name 'Ravenskelf' meant 'shelving knoll/ridge of the raven. The village features St. Barnabas Church, built in 1878 and a Methodist chapel first built in 1868 and expanded in the 1930s. The Methodist chapel also features a schoolroom, where today the local newspaper, the STAR (Scrooby, Torworth and Ranskill) is printed. Ranskill also has a reading room, built in 1891 by the Gillott family as a library and reading room, where in 1909 the room was changed to include billiard tables. Scrooby Until 1766, it was on the Great North Road so became a stopping-off point for numerous important figures including Queen Elizabeth I and Cardinal Wolsey on their journeys. The latter stayed at the Manor House briefly, after his fall from favour. An earlier resident William Brewster became dissatisfied with the Anglican Church and attempted to leave for the Netherlands in 1607. After an unsuccessful first attempt, Brewster succeeded in 1608. He eventually went to New England in 1620 on the Mayflower, as one of the people later called Pilgrim Fathers. By Dave Binnington and Peter Rowsell

Pathfinders Walking Club Sunday 10th March dawned wet and windy but it didn't put off Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club. We set off early and soon reached the starting point for our walks around Kirkham Abbey, near Stamford Bridge. Three walks of varying distances were led by our experienced leaders. There was a good turnout for the A walk of around 11 miles, setting off from Westow, through Howsham Woods and then on to the pub at Crambe. After a pint and the chance to dry off, we followed the Centenary Way, through the village of Firby and back to Westow. The B walkers followed a similar but shorter route of around 8 miles, also enjoying a pint at the Stone Trough Inn at Crambe. Our group of C walkers completed 6 miles and spent some time at Howsham Mill where there are some interesting displays. Not wanting to miss out on a pint, the walk ended at Crambe where they were picked up by the coach. Although the day started wet, the weather improved in the afternoon and we were able to dry off before our coach journey back to Doncaster. We are a group of like-minded people who like to get out and about in our beautiful countryside. We welcome new members so if you would like to join us, search for Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club on Facebook or visit our website www.doncasterpathfinders.org.uk. Our next walk is on Sunday 7th April when we will be walking part of the Wolds Way. If you can't make it in April why not join us on 5th May when we will be in the Matlock area."

Wonderful news!! We have reached our target to buy the CT scanner for Doncaster Royal Infirmary! A huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated towards this appeal or helped us in any way - we couldn't have done it without you all. Initial work started on the new CT suite at DRI in February (which will house two CT scanners) and should be operational by early 2020. Our new fundraising appeal is for prostate cancer. The NHS states that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, with over 40,000 new cases diagnosed every year. We plan to raise ÂŁ150,000 to buy a Transperineal Prostate Biopsy machine for the Urology Department at DRI. If you have any fundraising ideas to help buy this desperately needed equipment please do get in touch with us. Don't forget our Mile of Coins week will be in Frenchgate Centre from 1st to 6th April, 10am-3pm each day. All donations to our prostate cancer appeal. Also a reminder to register for our Midsummer Walk which is on Sunday, 19th May. Please contact Christine Whiteley on 01302 536472 or by Email: musicline02@yahoo.co.uk. Price is ÂŁ6 per person and is free for disabled and children under 12. We are at 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), 2nd floor, Room 209. School News from Copley Junior School

World Book Day

We are keen to promote interest and enjoyment in reading at Copley Junior and, as always, we were delighted to see the children’s enthusiastic response to our World Book Day activities. The children chose the theme of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ to celebrate World Book Day and children (and staff!) were invited to come to school dressed as an animal or book character featured in a fiction or nonfiction book. Can you guess the book titles from the costumes the children are wearing in the photographs below?

Book Swap On World Book Day all the children who brought a book for our swap event were invited to select a new title to take home. The children thoroughly enjoyed browsing and choosing, and it was made all the more enjoyable as there were so many titles to choose from Themed Reading Collection and Reading Challenge The children helped us choose 65 new ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ book titles which we displayed centrally for children to borrow and read. After just one week, the titles have been read 118 times so we are delighted by the enthusiastic response of the children. Our ‘Reading Challenge’ celebrates and rewards children’s success as they record their hours of reading. Gymnastics Success Well done to members of our gymnastics team, who did so well to compete at county level by reaching the Yorkshire Championships. The children's performance was excellent and we are very proud to share they came 1st for the whole of Yorkshire and are now County Champions! The team is now practising hard ready to compete in the National Finals. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher
