Welcome to the April issue of The Sprotbrough Arrow. With the latest news on the Coronavirus changing daily, I would like to advise everyone to check any events, meetings and church services advertised in this month’s Arrow as well as the church leaflet enclosed before attending and to follow the advice of Public Health England and the NHS. There is a centre page pull-out in this month’s Arrow which advises readers of a community support initiative to help anyone who may be self isolating or in need of support. The website address for Public Health England and the NHS is there too. Please check these sources for information to make sure you follow the correct advice. There is a lot of incorrect information about. This issue can also be viewed online via our website, address below. The deadline for the May issue is Wednesday 15th April The May issue will be distributed the weekend beginning 24th April all being well. Keep safe, well informed and check on your neighbours if you can. Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937

Doncaster Pathfinders We all know that February this year was the wettest on record and didn't we have some horrible storms to contend with? One of these put paid to our walk last month as Storm Ceira battered us. It's not very often we cancel but in the interests of safety we decided it was for the best. March came around quickly and our planned walk on the Wolds Way went ahead without a hitch on Sunday 8th March. The A walkers set off from the village of South Cave, picking up the Yorkshire Wolds Way, passing Low Hunsley Plantation, through East Dale and Swin Dale before arriving in North Newbald for our lunch stop. There was a choice of two pubs in this pretty Wolds village, the Tiger Inn and the Gnu Inn. After lunch we continued on the Wolds Way, turning off at Arras Wold to walk through Sancton Wold to reach the finish at Sancton. A moderate walk of 12 miles for our A walkers. Our B walkers enjoyed a circular walk of about 8 miles taking in some fine Wolds scenery, starting in the market town of Market Weighton, famous as the birthplace of Britains tallest man, William Bradley who was 7 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 27 stone! A statue of him stands in the centre of his hometown. We crossed fields and followed tracks to the village of Londesborough passing close to the pretty Norman church of All Saints. Londesborough was once the location of Londesborough Hall, the hall was demolished in 1818, the park remains as we walked through it, you could only imagine how grand it once was. Passing over more fields we reached Goodmanham, a fine pub, full of character and home of the All Hallows brewery. Suitably refreshed, the walkers made their way back to Market Weighton along one of the disused railway lines closed in the Beeching Era. A good day had by all, looking forward to more springtime walking! We welcome new walkers so if you are interested in joining us, we are off to the Farndale area on 5th April and are really looking forward to a coastal walk, finishing in Robin Hoods Bay on 3rd May. For details about how to get in touch, please check out our Facebook page or website www.doncasterpathfinders.org.uk. Our programme for remainder of the year has been finalised and can also be found on Facebook or on our website.

Good news about the CT scanner. The suite was opened on 6th March, although the official opening will be on 24th April. Some of our members went along to view the suite and were very impressed. We will put photographs of the official opening on our website and no doubt there will be pictures in the press. Our current prostate cancer appeal fund now stands at over £62,000 at the time of writing and we would like to thank everyone who has recently donated. We really do appreciate all your support. Registration is going well for our popular Midsummer Walk on Sunday, 17th May. It starts at 10am and is from Town Fields to Lakeside and return. The distance is approximately 6 miles, but can be reduced. It is all on public footpaths and is wheelchair and dog friendly. Entry is £6 and is free for disabled and children under the age of 12. Please contact Christine Whiteley, Tel. 01302 536472 or Email: musicline02@yahoo.co.uk. Christine is a member of Thorne Rural Lions who organise the walk for us. Please try and book beforehand as it saves queuing on the day, although you are welcome to register from 9am on the morning of the Walk. Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. We are still looking for a volunteer to take over the role of Honorary Secretary at our office in Wood Street. It does mean working alone for the majority of the time, but there are social occasions to get together with everyone else. If you would like more information or would like to pop along for a chat please contact Ruth on 01302 325029 to arrange a visit. It is very rewarding work and you will be made very welcome.

NEWS FROM RICHMOND HILL Year 6 enjoyed a visit to Crucial Crew where they took part in a range of scenarios such as a Magistrates Court. The experience was great fun but also a fantas c opportunity to learn some serious lessons from a variety of emergency services.

Recep on at Richmond Hill ended Spring Term 1 with a celebra on of inven ons designed and made at home, judged by 'Professor Pipkin' who graced us with his presence. Straight back into a brand new topic a er a well-earned rest at half term. O we went to Sprotborough Library who are wonderful hosts. We can’t thank them enough for being so welcoming, well prepared and resourced. The children listened to stories, played games and got stuck in at the crea ve table. Such a treat just a walk away. Year 3 had a fantas c day at York's Chocolate Story. The children learned about the history of some well-known chocolate brands and the process of how chocolate is made. They even made their own chocolate lollies and bars!

The UK has well-established plans to deal with outbreaks of infectious disease and everyone can play an important role in making these plans work, slowing down the spread of coronavirus. We try to slow the spread of coronavirus for a number of important reasons: Firstly, we are still learning about COVID19. At the moment we believe that the majority of people who get the disease will experience a mild illness, but because this is a new virus we Public Health England, approved advice as of 16th March 2020. are not complacent, and our scientists will continue to learn from evidence emerging both here and internationally. Secondly, though we believe most people will have a mild illness, some older people or people with pre-existing health conditions will experience severe illness and we need to protect them. Finally, trying to slow an outbreak so everyone isn’t sick at once is an important way to manage pressure on health services and prevent widespread staff sickness absence in our public services and businesses. There some simple and effective actions everyone can take to protect themselves and their wider community: • Wash your hands before and after eating, using the toilet, preparing food and every time you return home for at least 20 seconds with warm water and soap. • Catch sneezes and coughs in a tissue, always carry tissues, bin them as soon as possible and wash your hands. Use your arm if you have no tissue. • If you suffer from a new persistent cough or high temperature, you and those you live with must self isolate for 14 days at home. Try to remain separate from others at home, eat separately and be the last person to use the bathroom, cleaning fully afterwards. You may exercise outside but keep away from other people. • Encourage social distancing, work from home where possible, avoid public transport, pubs, clubs, restaurants, theatre etc. • Have a plan of support for those around you in case anyone you know needs to self isolate, look after your neighbours and older members of your family with shopping etc. • If you start to experience symptoms and believe you could have coronavirus, do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital as you could pass the infection to others. Visit NHS UK's coronavirus (COVID-19) pageadvice. • Contact NHS 111your symptoms are getting worse. • The UK coronavirus (COVID-19) pagekeep you in touch with how the Government is responding. • The NHS coronavirus (COVID-19)includes a wide range of health-related information. • Follow Public Health England The Department of Health and Social CareTwitter for regular updates.

CORONAVIRUS COVID (19)

SUPPORT IN OUR VILLAGES, PROVIDED BY OUR COMMUNITY As we are all now aware, the Coronavirus is among us and the Government has issued guidance to help slow the spread of this virus. Their aim is to delay the ‘peak’ and hopefully reduce the size of the peak to help alleviate the pressure on the NHS. The advice at the time of going to print on Tuesday 17th March 2020 has been published on the opposite page. It is important you keep up to date with the latest advice using the official NHS and Public Health England websites as this advice may change.

www.gov.uk/government/organisations/public-health-england www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19

St Mary’s Church are collating a list of volunteers, residents within our community, who are happy to provide help with shopping and errands for the elderly and those who need to self isolate if they have no other support. These volunteers are not replacing the work of the NHS and care providers, they are simply residents carrying out neighbourly duties and helping where they can. The most important thing is to keep yourself safe and consider the safety of others. The volunteers WILL NOT need to enter your property and will only knock on your door if you have requested their help. You will know in advance, the name of the person who will assist you. Rev’d Amanda Barraclough and Andrea Offord will be the main contacts. They will not always be available as they have their own commitments to attend to but will try to get back to you as soon as possible if they miss your call. Hopefully this support should provide you with help should you need it.

We don’t want anyone in our community going without food or essential items because they have no one to ask for help.

Rev’d Amanda Barraclough Tel: 01302 854836 Email: amanda.barraclough1@b nternet.com Andrea Offord Tel: 01302 788428 Email: andrea.offord@gmail.com Sarah Beckingham Tel: 07592 526058 WANT TO OFFER YOUR SUPPORT? Please contact Rev’d Barraclough or Andrea Offord. above by email. They will need your name, address, whether you drive, email address and confirmation you are happy to share your contact details for the purpose of this community initiative.

Please keep up to date with current advice and continue to wash your hands. 17

School News from Copley Junior School World Book Day We are keen to promote interest and enjoyment in reading at Copley Junior and, as always, we were delighted to see the children’s enthusiastic response to our World Book Day activities. The children (and staff!) looked fabulous in their book character themed costumes. Can you guess the book titles from the costumes the children are wearing in the photographs below?

Book Swap On World Book Day all the children who brought a book for our swap event were invited to select a new title to take home. The children thoroughly enjoyed browsing and choosing, and it was made all the more enjoyable as there were so many titles to choose from. In total, 152 titles were brought into school and children thoroughly enjoyed browsing and choosing, and it was made all the more enjoyable as there were so many titles to choose from.

Themed Reading Collection We have purchased a fantastic range of new books for children on a theme of ‘Award Winners’. In order to extend children’s reading, we have selected titles that have won awards e.g. Carnegie Children’s Medal, Waterstone’s Children’s Book Prize etc. Children are invited to borrow these books to read at home and then to return them to school and our central display for someone else to enjoy. Each book has a review slip inside the jacket so that children can see who has read the book and read their short review. Book Fair Children really enjoyed browsing through all the lovely book titles at the Book Fair. Lots of great new books to read! Gymnastics Success Well done to members of our gymnastics team, who did so well to compete at county level by reaching the Yorkshire Championships. The children's performance was excellent and we are very proud to share they came 2nd for the whole of Yorkshire! We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton

NEWS FROM ORCHARD INFANT SCHOOL This half term at Orchard the children are learning all about food. The children in Reception, Year One and Year Two recently visited Tesco and enjoyed their ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the store. They explored the aisles, looked closely at the traffic light system on food packaging, went in the warehouse, smelt the delicious smells in the bakery and found out how much sugar different drinks contain. They particularly enjoyed making their own flavoured water using various pieces of fruit. The children in Nursery have made fruit kebabs, with the fruit kindly gifted by Tesco, and were encouraged to add fruits they hadn’t tried before. They carefully cut the fruits by themselves and then enjoyed eating their kebabs. In Reception the children have been talking about the changes in the weather and how some wildlife need help finding food. They have made bird feeders using hooped cereal and pipe cleaners which they will hang in their outdoor area and observe the types of birds which use them. The children in Year 1 have been learning about instruction writing. They closely followed instructions to make a sandwich and soon realised they needed to be more precise! The children are now going to write their own clear instructions using imperative verbs.

Year 2 have been looking at the importance of hygiene when handling food. They have set up a science investigation where they handled bread under different conditions (hands washed with soap, hands cleaned with hand sanitiser, unwashed hands, placed on the floor and a control piece of bread). The children will observe the changes which occur over time and are looking forward to finding out the results!

This half term the children are learning all about the human body and how we keep ourselves healthy. We have discussed the importance of a balanced diet and exercise. For Sport Relief the children have been set the challenge ‘Can we walk 100 miles in 5 days?’ Each child in school will walk 1,500 steps each day and collectively we will achieve enough steps to walk the 100 miles of the Namib Desert in Namibia. That’s over a million steps! Good luck Team Orchard! On the 5th March here at Orchard we celebrated World Book Day by coming to school in our pyjamas because bedtime is often when children enjoy sharing stories. Children were also invited to ‘Donate a Book’ and we would like to thank the children and their parents for their generosity. These books are continuing to be shared throughout school and the Year 2 children have relished the opportunity to read to the younger children within school.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB danum probus.co.uk

Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At this meeting we have a speaker whose subjects cover a wide variety of interests, the programme can be found on our website, www.danumprobus.co.uk. Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the annual holiday which is usually in early June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Section play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. On Monday 20 February our presenters were Julie Colver and Valerie and Michael Oxley whose topic was “The Journal of Amelia Staniforth of Firbeck Hall”. This Hall, originally built in 1594, is situated near Worksop, and the subject was the very detailed journal kept by Amelia Staniforth from 1782-85. Amelia and her sister Henrietta lived at the Hall at that time, and a daily detailed account of their day to day life can be built up from the entries. The Journal gives a full account of their social life at his time, including visits to other local Halls, even down to the names of their card games and the times which people set off and arrived. There are also entries about the food and drink eaten at the Hall. There is an entry about a feast at the Mansion House in Doncaster, which must have been some celebration because they arrived at 3pm in the afternoon and left at about 3am the following morning. There are also lots of references to the weather. This was a fascinating account of life in a “big house” towards the end of the 18th century taken from the journal of one of its residents. The journal has been transcribed by Valerie Oxley and Julie Culver from the hand written original, standardising the spelling, into a modern manuscript. Then on Monday 2 March Mike Burdis made a welcome return “Catching a Spy”. This was a detailed presentation about the spy Nicholas Prager, who was convicted of selling official secrets about the ‘V’ Bombers and their navigation systems to the Czechoslovak government during the Cold War. Prager came to England because his father was a clerk at the British Embassy in Prague until it was closed in the late 1940’s because of the Cold War, and he and family were offered settled status in the UK. After studying electronics at Prague University, where he met his wife Jana, he joined the RAF and was trained in radar technology. After several postings he was moved to RAF Finningley where he had access to secure information. Becoming fed up with the work, and feeling he was underpaid, he offered to spy for the then Czech Government. This went on for a number of years before being brought to the attention of the British authorities by two Czech defectors. He left the RAF to work for GEC, specifically on the first computer controlled rolling mill in Rotherham, from where he was seconded to Bratislava to help install and run a similar mill. During this time a full investigation into his, and his wife’s, activities was in progress, and he was arrested on returning to England for a conference. He was convicted for his activities, and served a prison sentence. He died when he was only 52 years old. The death certificate said heart problems, but there were suspicions that it might have been homicide On 8 April our speaker is Keith Lumley with “Firearms and Forensics”, and then on 20 April Sue Clifton’s subject is “RSBP - The Birds in our Gardens”. Any interested men who would like to come to these meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Des Parks (01302 856188), George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table. More information is also available on the website (danumprobus.co.uk).
