Welcome

to the August issue of

Sprotbrough Arrow

It’s that time of year when our young people leave their familiar school environment to move onto new horizons. After the most challenging of times, I would like to wish them all the very best of luck for September and what ever it may bring. Thank you to all the local schools for your wonderful support, it is so lovely that you share everything you are doing in school with the local community. After the last 18 months, I hope everyone can relax and enjoy the summer break and return in September revitalised and ready for our new world! The deadline for the September issue is Wednesday 18th August. The September issue will be distributed the last full weekend in August. Happy holidays and keep safe. Michelle Sidebottom

On a cold, wet February evening I received an email to inform me that I had been lucky enough to be allocated a ballot place in the 2021 London Marathon. I am not a natural runner so my first reaction was “I don’t think I can run that far!” After some serious talking to myself I confirmed my place and got my running shoes on. I have been training four times a week since February and I can often be found stumbling along the trans pennine trail or pounding the pavements around Sprotbrough. After the difficult year we have had, I felt that the London Marathon would be a personal challenge for me, but I also wanted to use it as an opportunity to raise money for Barnardo’s. I have set up a just giving page and would be grateful for any support for this fantastic charity. Wish me luck and give me a shout out if you see me out running. Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School Recently, we have welcomed visitors back into school to extend our children’s learning. Specifically, we hosted Reverend Amanda on Monday 21st June who spoke to the children about summer sols ce. We learnt about the longest day of the year and how the Earth is at its furthest point from the sun. She shared with us a PowerPoint presenta on and objects rela ng to the ma er in hand. We would like to extend our thanks to Reverend Amanda and her con nued support for school, children always enjoy her assemblies! On 1st and 8th July we had our class swap days to give children opportunity to meet their new teachers for academic year 2021-22. Children had a wonderful experience of visi ng their new classrooms which many haven’t had chance to see before due to CO-VID19 ‘bubbles’. All children are super excited to start a new adventure in September with their friends. Wednesday 7th July saw our Sports Day event. Unfortunately, the weather was a tad inclement meaning some year groups had to par cipate indoors in the school hall. However, the classes who were able to make it outside to the field joined in with the egg and spoon race, javelin and long jump to name just a few. Miss Belk and our two sports coaches did us proud planning and delivering on a fantas c line up so we would like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks to them for all their efforts. To e in with our topic this half term, the Olympics, we joined a Zoom call on Friday 9th July with local hero Beth Dobbin! She spoke to the children about her journey from her own school sports days to her qualifying just recently for Tokyo 2020. Children had the opportunity earlier in the week to compose and write ques ons ready for Beth and they were extremely proud to have given their wri ng purpose. We are looking forward to tuning in a er 23rd July to watch her race in the 200m and relay and we know she will do a brilliant job -- GO BETH!

The Head teacher’s Award is given in recognition of the demonstration of the key learner values that we hold dear at Copley Junior School. These include academic endeavour, cheerfulness, getting fully involved in school life, integrity, showing a good example to and caring for others, and enjoying all that the school offers. Head teacher’s Award 2021: Alice A and Oliver S Following the Year 6 Graduation, the children packed their bags ready for their residential visit to Northumberland. Coastal walks, a boat trip to the Farne Island, visits to Dunstanburgh Castle and Alnwick Castle and evening activities on the beach. What a perfect end to the school year! We wish all our Year 6 leavers every success at their new secondary schools. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher

Richmond Hill Academy Goodbye and Good Luck Year 6 We are so lucky that our Year 6 leavers’ party could go ahead and what a lovely event it was. It’s been a difficult year for these wonderful children with many events cancelled including their residen al. But the sun shone bright for our shining stars for their outside disco. Our leavers’ party wouldn’t be complete without its ice cream shack. The children enjoyed making and ea ng their own sundaes in the sunshine ‘Underneath the balloon arches………’ - we captured some fantas c group photos for our Year 6 children to keep as special memories of their day.

Ahar mi hear es Year 1 walked the plank all the way into year 2 in their transi on week. They were fantas cally fearless - Well done. Our Nursery children thoroughly enjoyed making face masks when they visited their new Recep on class.
