Welcome to the August issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow So much can change in a month! When I last went to print we were in the EU, had a male Prime Minister and we were hoping to win Euro 2016 or at the very least beat Iceland!! By the time this month’s issue goes to print we will have our second female Prime Minister and very possibly on our way to a female leader of the Labour party. All we need now is Hillary in power and the ladies will rule the world (officially)! ;) Many young people will receive exam results over the holiday period, I hope everyone gets the results they need to enable them to pursue their dreams, what ever they may be. Good luck to all pupils moving up to secondary school, again, I hope you make the most of the opportunities that come your way. The deadline for the September issue will be Wednesday 17th August. The Arrow will be delivered the last full weekend in August.

Best wishes and Happy Holidays Michelle Sidebottom Website www.arrowpublications.co.uk E-mail michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk Mobile 07795 387937

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School What another packed month we’ve had here at Orchard! It’s fair to say that the children and staff alike have earned their summer holidays this year with how busy they’ve been packing lots of amazing activities into the last few weeks of term. On 17th June, year two children harvested their potato crop to enter a competition which aims to get children planting and growing vegetables. They enjoyed the process of chitting the bulbs, planting them in compost and harvesting. Currently, we are waiting to hear the results of the competition. During week commencing 20th of June, all children in all year groups participated in National Sports Week. We timetabled a packed week of fun sporting activities. Highlights included Twinkle the pony coming to visit us, cricket skills and dance routines. We would like to give a special thanks to Mrs Caress, Mrs Hardy and James Ward from PTC Sports for their involvement and help in providing a fabulous experience for the children. We held our later than planned sports day on Wednesday 6th July which was well attended by families of the children. They had lots of fun competing in the traditional running race, egg and spoon and bean bag race. All of our children participated well and were good sports. On Friday 8th July we held our tri-annual summer disco which again was very well attended. We would like to thank our parent helpers for their commitment to ensuring the disco ran smoothly. Reception concert and nursery graduation both saw a great turn out from parents and families of the children. The teaching staff and children put a lot of hard work and effort into practising and rehearsing their lines in preparation for a big audience. Key Stage 1 concerts will be held on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th July from 9.30. We are anticipating that they will too be well attended. We do ask that any photographs you have taken of your child/ ren at school for any event not be posted on social media sites due to child protection.

On Thursday 7th July Annette and Toni came into school to talk to the children about summer safety to bear in mind over the summer break. They talked about children staying away from water, no matter how tempting it looks and being polite and respectful to neighbours. They have made an appointment to come back into school in September to check that everyone had a good break. School will reopen to children on Monday 5th September, we hope that everybody has a fantastic and safe

Richmond Hill Primary Academy Opera North

Opera North are acclaimed for innovation and creativity, so we just couldn’t miss out on the opportunity for our Y5 pupils to work with them and share their experience of opera. Pupils were totally committed to this new genre and their hard work certainly paid off, culminating in an electrifying performance at Doncaster’s Cast Theatre.

Race for Life Following Richmond Hill’s own Race for Life, donations from sponsorship for Cancer Research UK, have so far hit £1,289. The children had a thoroughly enjoyable experience running with their class mates in a spirit of friendship.

Y6 Performance Our Year 6 End of Year Performance was a journey into ‘Saturday Night at the Movies’. They experienced what life would be like living without their ‘electronic devices’. Luckily their imaginations managed to stay intact as they spiralled into a world where they could sing and dance through a catalogue of old movies (or films as some people still call them!)

Y2 Visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park Yorkshire Sculpture Park is a pioneering place that aims to challenge, inspire, inform and delight. Our Year 2 children were absolutely enthralled by the sculptures they encountered!

Stand Up to Bullying Day Stand Up to Bullying Day is a national campaign spearheaded by The Diana Award (a legacy to Princess Diana) that focuses on bullying. Our pupils shared the school’s commitment to the 10 Stand up to Bullying Pledges.

Sporting News Congratulations to our Multi-Skills Team who won 2nd place out of an initial 64 Doncaster schools, at the competition finals held at Dearne Valley Leisure Centre – a phenomenal result! We are also very proud to announce that Richmond Hill has achieved the Gold School Games Mark Award for commitment, engagement and delivery of competitive school sport.

School News from Copley Junior School Children’s University Graduation

In November 2015 we registered with Doncaster Children’s University™ as a ‘Learning Destination’ and held a celebration launch assembly with the whole school which was very exciting! Children's University is an opportunity for children to be rewarded for spending time involved in positive activities outside normal school hours. Children's University is an exciting way for children to learn by having fun and doing things they enjoy! Children record each hour that they do in an activity at a Children's University Learning Destination in the Children's University 'Passport to Learning'. Children are encouraged to work towards national certificates that are issued from the Children’s University. Certificates can be awarded up to 1000 hours. In July we attended our first Children's University Graduation Ceremony in the beautiful surroundings of High Melton College. Fifty six of our children 'graduated', having achieved at least 30 hours of extra-curricular learning. Many of our pupils have achieved far more than this - in some cases, over 276 hours and counting! Thank you to over 90 parents/carers who were able to join us for this lovely occasion. Science Week 2016 Last week we had a Science focus week. We are very grateful to the CSA for funding our ‘Living Eggs’ project. We have had the fun of watching nine chicks hatching. We organised live streaming across the classrooms and chicks emerged to the sounds of cheers from the classrooms!

Our Science Week was busy, with plenty of scientific enquiry. Children in Year 3 investigated the power of magnets and have undertaken investigative Science and Maths work linked to the Olympic Games. Children in Year 4 took part in practical work to find out about our digestive system. This included a representation of digested food, the functions of, for example, saliva and stomach acid, all with the aid of a pair of tights! Year 5 children continued their study of the properties of materials, including investigation of reversible and irreversible changes as part of their Alchemy Island project. In Year 6 children carried out investigations to explore the concept of adaptation. Year 5 Choir Performance at the Cast Theatre Well done to our Year 5 children who joined a choir of 200 children and the Chorus of Opera North at the CAST Theatre in ‘Myths and Legends’. Thank you to so many parents/carers for supporting the children. They performed so well; what a wonderful experience for our children. Top British Mountaineer Visits Year 4 This week Year 4 were very excited to meet Mr Alan Hinkes, who brought the excitement of mountains and adventures to the children in Year 4 as part of their creative learning project ‘Misty Mountain Sierra’. Mr Hinkes OBE is the first British mountaineer to have claimed all 14 mountains with elevations greater than 8000 metres. He summited Mount Everest in May 1996. We are thrilled that he was able to visit us to inspire and inform our children. It was extra special for Mia McG in Year 4, as Mr Hinkes is also her grandfather! We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher
