Community News Could you give 2 hours a month to support an older person to get more out of life? Dennis is 91 and lives alone in Doncaster; his passion in life is all things football. A lot of people we support through Age UK Doncaster are safe, warm and have everything practical they need, but they are often lonely and not doing the things that matter the most to them in life. Since launching in January 2017, Circles is putting a stop to this. Circles put people at the centre of everything we do; we are about all the things that make life that little bit richer. Each Circle has a clear purpose. The purpose of Dennis’s Circle is to keep him involved in football. ‘I love football, I could talk all day about it but it’s not the same when you don’t see many people, especially those with the same interests’. Friends of Sprotbrough Library Dennis was matched with our volunteer Alex. They invite YOU to a have since attended a charity football match together and have been reminiscing over old team photos. Other people’s Circles involve staying active, cookAt Sprotbrough Library 10am-12noon ing or crafts, re-connecting with a faith community Saturday 16th September or starting dancing again. Richmond Hill Primary Academy Healthy Week It’s safe to say that Richmond Hill had another jam-packed Healthy Week! We kicked off the week with the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Sports Days, for which we were lucky enough to have had some sun! We would like to thank everyone who came out to support our competitors and really gave everyone a much needed boost during their events. We would also like to thank Sainsbury’s Sprotbrough Local, who provided water and juice for our Reception Sports Day! Later in the week, pupils took part in lots of fun lessons and activities, including KS2 Taekwondo sessions and KS1 Balance Bike sessions! Tour de Yorkshire Relay A selection of pupils were given the opportunity to take part in a Tour de Yorkshire cycle relay this morning, alongside pupils from all over Yorkshire! Pupils set off on their part of the relay just before 10.00am and returned for 12.00pm, having cycled a phenomenal 9 miles, which is the longest section of the route on our leg of the relay! Our pupils cycled from school to The Boat Inn, where they were passed a baton by pupils from Denaby. They then cycled from The Boat Inn to Castle Hills Primary to pass on the baton to the next group before cycling back to Richmond Hill. The Doncaster leg of the relay visited Hooten Pagnell, Barnburgh, Conisbrough, Sprotbrough, Bentley, Toll Bar and Snaith, where the baton was handed off to East Riding Council. Pupils cycled alongside two members of staff and a qualified ride leader, along with the leader of the relay. The event was organised and lead by the charity Sustrans, who encourage children and adults to take up cycling. Well done to the pupils who took part, who earned a well-deserved rest! Hill House Partnership After a fantastic Art & Textiles Workshop in March, our pupils were lucky enough to attend another fantastic experience at Hill House School. Year 5 pupils attended the Hill House Primary Science Fair this June, where they took part in Chemistry, Biology and Physics lessons, with full access to the school’s labs and equipment! The accompanying teachers as “fantastic” and that the children “thoroughly enjoyed the hands on approach” they experienced during the day. Thank you again to Hill House for such a fabulous day!

Happy Trails, Y6! We would just like to take the opportunity to say well done and farewell to our Year 6 pupils! Good luck in your new schools, we’re sure you will do fantastically well! Thank you also to our Year 6 parents/carers for all your support over the years, it has been greatly appreciated. Poetry Competition Following on from the fantastic news that several of our Key Stage 2 pupils had been chosen to have their poetry published earlier in the year, we are incredibly pleased to announce that Key Stage 1 have repeated that success! Key Stage 1 pupils also took part in a poetry competition recently, with the chance to have their work published in a book, and we’re delighted to announce that we have some winners! Pupils wrote poems based on the theme ‘Poetry Safari’ and wrote about all kinds of animals, even minatours! Congratulations poets, we can’t wait to see your work in print! Congratulations to Charlie Lindsay, Angel Standell, Keira Perry, Chloe Greenhalgh-Wilson, Finley Williams, Matilda Gillespie, Isobel Jenkins, Charlie Kay, Leticia Shaw, Sophie O’Connor and Xavier Burfield for their fantastic work! The book, Poetry Safari – Northern Verse Makers, will be published on 31st October 2017.

School News from Copley Junior School

Children’s University 2017

In July we attended the Children's University Graduation Ceremony in the beautiful surroundings of High Melton College. Fifty six of our children 'graduated', having achieved at least 30 hours of extra-curricular learning. Many of our pupils have achieved far more than this - in some cases, over 643 hours and counting! Sports Festival at the National Institute of Sport As part of our local partnerships in P.E. and Games, we were invited to take part in an inter-school Sports Festival at the National Institute of Sport in Sheffield. This was a great opportunity for children to engage in sport with other schools at a world class sporting facility. Each school represented a different country – we embraced Jamaica! Cricket Success Well done to our cricket team! Last month we played local schools and became the Ridgewood Champions. We then progressed to compete in the Doncaster Finals and we are very proud to share that our team members are now the 2017 Doncaster Cricket Champions.

Diana

Award We are very proud to share that our pupil-led Anti Bullying Ambassador Team has been awarded a national honour, the Diana Award. In the words of the awarding body, “the Diana Award was set up in memory of Princess Diana and her belief that young people have the power to change the world for the better.” The award celebrates “exceptional young people who embody Princess Diana’s qualities of kindness, compassion and service.” During the year our Anti Bullying Ambassadors have led successful activities to promote Anti Bullying Week and E Safety. They lead a ‘playground patrol’ to monitor play each week, in addition to the adults on duty, and love to share the examples of kind and supportive play that they have seen. To mark their success, the Anti Bullying team will be invited to a regional ‘INSPIRE’ event to receive their certificates and to advance their skill-set still further in specially tailored workshops with other young people who are leading inspiring work in their schools. The children were also excited to receive a personal invitation from The Earl of Spencer to visit Althorp House, Diana’s childhood home, over the Summer with their parents.

Year 6 Residential Visit to Northumberland Well done to our Year 6 pupils, who have returned from a very enjoyable residential visit to Northumberland. The children had a very busy four days, which included a visit to Alnwick Castle and a broomstick workshop, a boat trip to the Farne Islands landing on Inner Farne and visits to Dunstanburgh Castle, the Grace Darling Museum, Bamburgh Church, Vindolanda and Beamish Museum. The children stayed in Seahouses in a hotel next to the beach so evening activities included cricket, paddling in the very cold sea and playing games on the beautiful sandy beach. Many adults at the venues we visited commented on the interest and enthusiasm of the children, as well as their excellent behaviour and polite manners. Of course we expect this from our Copley children, but it is always lovely to hear. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton, Head teacher

Conservation Volunteers

Newsletter

Summer is here again as I write. I have been away on holiday during June and experienced more rain than I would have liked, but that’s England for you. Now it is July and tomorrow we are heading for Warmsworth Gala, so let’s hope the sun manages to last for tomorrow at least!

Funding We have had some good news this week in that we have received a grant of £1000 from the St George’s, Doncaster branch of the Rotary Club. This is for equipment to enable the volunteers to prune back the hedges that have been laid over the past few years. They have now grown out of all proportion and need topping and siding so that will be a job for the future. The voting for the Tesco Plastic Bag Fund also finished at the end of June so we are now waiting to hear how much we will receive from that – it depends how many voted for us. We are hoping we have done well as we need it for the project we are doing near the fish pass. This will start in earnest on Tuesday 18 July and continue throughout the Summer. It’s possible some Thursdays may be worked as well now that the dry -stone wall building at Cusworth is finished. This work was not really connected with the Don Gorge group, but several of our volunteers joined that project.

The group continues to meet on alternate Tuesdays; as I said the next session is 18 July, meeting at the lock house, although they are likely to be found near the fish pass once they get their equipment together. If you are interested in joining them, they start at 10 am and work until about 3 pm. Suitable clothing and a packed lunch is required, as well as an appropriate insect repellent if you suffer that way. Work on the Himalayan Balsam slashing will also continue as and when possible. Last year’s efforts seem to have paid off and there is not as much so far this year.

Sightings in the Gorge I received a report yesterday morning of an otter having been seen in the river below the lock. All good news. Anyone else seeing one (or more, even better) and able to photo it would be gratefully received, as would reports of sightings of otters or anything else interesting.

Blog Don’t forget to check this and our website out now and again. Just put Don Gorge Community Group into your search engine and I’m sure you’ll find us.

Don Discovery Day – Thursday, 24 August 2017 Please put this date in your diaries now. A variety of activities are being organised for all ages, ie the launch of the Don Valley Way by the Don Catchment River Trust, information on Geocaching and trips on the Wyre Lady. Several groups will also be represented, including the Environment Agency; Yorkshire Wildlife Trust; the Canal & Rivers Trust, who will open the lock house; the River Stewardship Company, who do work in relation to invasive species; and ourselves Andy Routhwaite, a wood turner, is also coming and, of course, there will be another fishing taster event which was so popular last year. A quiz with prizes will also be available. So it’s looking like it should be a great day out for all the family and we’ll keep our fingers crossed for good weather. Look out for posters which will be going up shortly.

Sprotbrough Lock

See you there. Liz

This gorgeous boy is Donald, a very affectionate 4 year old boy who has recently come into Isle Rescue, and is looking for a new home. Donald is great with other cats and would be fine with kids, and would make a lovely family pet. He is just one of 15 cats currently in the Rescue looking for new homes. All of our older cats are neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you would like to come and meet any of our cats or dogs, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705 or check out our website- www.islerescue.co.uk for more details
