Community News Said Caroline: “Our aim is simply to tidy these graves, in this centenary year, and have them properly marked in honour of these brave men once again.” Father Stephen Edmonds said “The Parish of St John the Baptist, Edlington, is very keen to fulfil its responsibility to ensure that the graves of these servicemen are properly cared for and the site rejuvenated.” Said Old Edlington resident Dave Glover: “I’m delighted by the support I’ve received from Caroline Flint and Father Edmonds. There is no better time to honour these men who gave their lives and I’m more optimistic than ever that we will get the job done.” For more information contact Phil Cole 07950 635393; father Edmonds 01709 858358 or Dave Glover on 07932 723242

Caroline Flint and Father Stephen Edmonds are joining local historian Dave Glover and local residents to restore the graves of four veterans who gave their lives in World War I.

Alarms & CCTV

The graves of: Private G Bucktrout (Military Medal), Private C McLaughlin, Private A Walker and Able Seaman C H Pye have been left unmarked for over 30 years in a small overgrown graveyard near St Peters Church Old Edlington. In this centenary year, the MP and local campaigners have established that the Church of England’s Sheffield Diocese still owns the small cemetery annexe where the graves are located, many years after the church closed in the 1970s. The headstones were removed in 1981.

Sprotbrough Cricket Club Under 15’s Cup Winning Side. Sprotbrough CC Under 15’s visited Hensall Cricket Club on Sunday 6th July to play Hensall CC Under 15’s, in the Pontefract District Alison Trophy Final after beating some quality sides on the way. Both Sprotbrough and Hensall were unbeaten in the league and in the cup all season and therefore both teams were keen to put up a good show. Both teams had chances of winning the game but it was Sprotbrough who came out on top. Sprotbrough won by 10 runs in a tense finish which could have gone either way. Neil Critchley, Under 15’s Manager said “Really proud to have been the Manager of a Super Under 15’s side this year, a brilliant effort to have finished the league unbeaten and to have won the Alison Trophy. Well Done Boys” Thanks to the U13 lads who helped us in the previous rounds but were not in the final, thanks to all the parents for a great turn out on the day and to the senior players and Club Chairman, Mark Mitchell for also giving the lads great support.

School News from

Copley Junior School

Summer Fair Thank you to everyone who supported our Summer Fair. Our CSA organised a range of stalls and activities including chocolate tombola, a silent auction, archery, bouncy castle, raffle, adult tombola, nail art and face painting, cake stall and the list goes on! Well done to our Year 6 pupils who used their enterprise skills to create games and activities to raise funds.

After the year group talent shows, I am pleased to confirm that Copley definitely has got talent! Well done to House leadership teams who organised the event. It was lovely to see the children’s confidence in sharing their talent and they had a very appreciative school audience. We had a great range of talent shared, including dances, singing, guitar and piano performances, stilt walking, blowing giant bubbles and dancing eyebrows to mention just a few! All the children who participated were awarded House points

Kaden sacrifices dry clothes for the school, charging pupils who wished to throw a wet sponge at him!

for their contribution. Thank you to the children from each year group who then shared their performance at our ‘Summer Showtime’ Concert for parents/ carers.

Scrumdiddlyumptious

As part of their healthy eating Scrumdiddlyumptious food project Year 3 have been studying the different food groups and how they help us to keep healthy. The children have explored what a ‘balanced’ diet means and how to create a nutritious and balanced meal. Children have created their own imaginative recipes. Movie clip presentations have been studied and the children presented one of their recipes as a movie clip in the style of a celebrity chef. The children have enjoyed creating nonsense poems about food and have studied advertisements for food leading to children using persuasive devices in an advert for their own smoothie. Year 3 enjoyed creating their own fruit smoothie and conducted market research (the tasting samples were delicious!) across school in order to evaluate their product. We look forward to sharing more of our school news soon. Best wishes E.A. Crayton Head teacher

A new Safari Village, offering a wide variety of distinctive gifts, has opened at the awardwinning Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

Bustling Safari Village

at Yorkshire Wildlife Park

The 600 square metre village, complete with its own café and a much larger YWP shop, also features crafts, artwork and décor and adds to the appeal of the UK’s fastest-growing visitor attraction. The Safari Village, which can be sampled without entering the Park, near Doncaster, is a perfect drop in for visitors before and after enjoying the magical walk-through experience of YWP.

The finishing touches were applied to the purpose-built units before Easter It feature outlets such as Etc Etc Etc, the admired jewellery, furniture and accessories store based in the village of Bawtry. It also offers a range of stylish goods including Emma Bridgewater pottery. Limited 2 Art displays work from some of the finest painters and most collectible artists including Kerry Darlington, Peter Smith and amazing bronze sculptures by Frogman. The Chocolate Box is also in the Village where sweet toothed visitors can enjoy an Aladdin's cave of sweets and chocolates. “We are always looking at ways to improve the YWP experience for visitors and the Safari Village will provide a unique range of gifts and showcase the work of talented local artists and craftsmen,” said YWP Director Cheryl Williams. “Shoppers can even enjoy the Safari Village without paying to enter the park, making it the perfect stopover for coaches on the way to or back from holiday destinations like the Dales.” The 70-acre park at Branton, which has won a string prestigious awards since it opened in 2009, had an extremely busy Easter with its unique collection of beautiful animals including Amur Tigers and Leopards, Painted Hunting Dogs, Lions and Giraffes. It offers an unrivalled opportunity to come face to face with a huge range of some of the world's most beautiful and at risk animals. See the Amur Leopards, the most endangered big cat on the planet, from an 8m-high viewing tower or through a 10m-glass wall at Leopard Heights. Visitors get the perfect view from a 150metre walkway of stunning Amur Tigers among waterfalls and pools. Sayan and Vladimir are among less than 400 Amur Tigers left in the world and are part of a crucial European wide breeding programme. Then there is Lion Country - home to the pride of ions rescued from a run-down zoo in Romania, now roaming in the extensive reserve with a lake and waterfalls. Visitors also enjoy the great African Plains where Zebra, Antelope, Ankole Cattle and Ostrich roam free, and the playful monkeys in Lemur Woods.
Then there are Meerkats, Wallabies, Camels, a giant Anteater, Zebra and many many more. There is also the weather proof 600 sq m Monkey Playbarn – the perfect place to warm up or stay out of the sun with a drink in the 120 seater eatery. Children can enjoy three levels of play equipment, including climbing frames, dens, slides and rope bridges - in full view of the new baboon reserve through a glass wall. Grammy nominated singer songwriter John Parr lifts up Sprotbrough Church Hall John Parr has been doing what he calls his ‘pretty village tour’ which can have a charity focus and I was approached by him via Howard Johnson to see if I could organise an event in Sprotbrough. I decided to organise the event in support of Brian Tumour Research and Support Across Yorkshire, as this charity is important to me because of Alastair, my husband. he as you will probably know died of a brain tumour which was inoperable in April 2013. We held the event on Saturday 17th May in St Mary’s church hall and it was well supported. John Parr told his ‘story’ from his humble beginnings to success in the USA, through music and singing. It was a fabulous evening and we raised £600 for Brian Tumour Research and Support. Janet Graves.
