Welcome to the August
issue of The
Sprotbrough Arrow. Congratulations to all students, teachers and parents who have just come to the end of the annual exam period. Whether it is SATs, GCSEs, A’Levels, BTECs or degrees, I hope you are rewarded with the results you all hope for. The early print this month has meant that we have missed the Annual Scout Gala and Road Race, the forecast looks good, so I hope it was a huge success and will have some information in September’s Arrow. If you have any photo’s you would like to share, please forward them on to my email address below. At last, summer has arrived! There is so much happening locally over the holiday period. Yorkshire Wildlife Park will have their ‘Summer Concerts’ every Saturday over the holiday period. I am looking forward to the West End Musicals concert on 17th August! The deadline for the September issue is Wednesday 14th August. The September issue will be distributed the last weekend in August.
Happy Holidays

By the time you read this the holiday season will be in full swing – let’s hope for good weather for everyone. We are thrilled to say the Midsummer Walk has so far raised £6,406. There is still some outstanding sponsorship money which we hope will eventually bring the total to nearer £7,000. Thank you so much to everyone who took part, their sponsors, Thorne Rural Lions who worked extremely hard and Vizuality who designed and printed all the paperwork. There is a coffee morning at the Church Hall, Hatfield Woodhouse on Saturday, 3rd August from 10-12 noon where there will be raffle prizes to be won. Proceeds will be donated to DCDT. We will have a stall at Auckley Show on Saturday, 17th August selling scarves, £2 mystery parcels and other goodies. The Show opens at 12 noon with free admission and free parking. Check out their website: auckleyshow.co.uk. There is lots to do and see for all the family including free competitions. Have you seen the displays for the “Happiness Movement” in Frenchgate Centre? They are designed to get people involved in various projects. There is a garden seating area outside Boots on the ground floor and two i-pads in the Centre where the public can send messages as well as make a donation to DCDT. Also we have fundraising packs available with lots of ideas to raise money for us! If you would like a pack to organise an event on our behalf please get in touch with us. We are at 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. Our Prostate Cancer appeal for the biopsy machine is slowly gathering strength and you can follow our progress with the “thermometer” on our website. All donations are gratefully received whether they are pennies or pounds. Just think – if 1,000 people donated £150 we would reach our £150,000 goal ! Food for thought…..?

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club
Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club were out on Sunday 14 July in the stunning Peak District in Derbyshire. All 3 walks set off from the picturesque small town of Castleton. Our 'C' walkers spent a little time looking around the town before starting their 5.5 mile walk. They went past the famous caverns at Speedwell, Treck and Peak before walking back to Castleton alongside the river Noe. The 'B' walkers completed a slightly longer walk of 8 miles, starting along the Odin Sitch stream, passed the remains of Odin mine with a coffee stop at Hollins Cross. A short walk further brought them to Hope for a pint at the Old Hall pub. They finished the walk along Peakshole water back into Castleton. Our 'A' walkers started with a steep climb up Cavedale, and once at the top there were stunning views over the Peak District and a glimpse of Peverill castle. We went on our way to a lunch stop at the Devonshire Arms in the small village of Peak Forest. The afternoon took us to Dam Hall where we joined the Limestone Way back into Castleton down the spectacular Winnats Pass. Not an easy 10 miles but well worth it for the views. If you would like to join us on our next walk to the Grassington area on 11 August, please search for Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club on Facebook or visit our website www.doncasterpathfinders.org.uk. If you can't
make it in August, why not join us on 8th September when we are back in the Peak District at Eyam.

Summer bargains The local RSPCA Charity Shops are launching their super summer bargains with all four outlets taking advantage of a bumper season of quality donations. The shops at The Courtyard, Bawtry; High Street, Maltby; Field Road, Thorne; and Queen Mary’s Road, Rossington are offering an excellent second-hand range including ladieswear, menswear, children’s and bric-a-brac. Each shop continues to invite quality donations – it is a never ending cycle, or in this case re-cycle. Shop sales help the local RSPCA continue the vital work for animals suffering cruelty and neglect. There are many ways to help us with our mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, donating cash or goods, sponsoring us through our Safe Haven programme and attending our events. We have charity shops at Maltby, Bawtry, Rossington and Thorne. At the Animal Centre we rehome the animals in our care and have a pet supplies store on site for all your requirements. We also provide a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. To donate £5, text ‘RSPCADRB’ to 70085.

School News from Copley Junior School
Children’s University 2019 In July we attended the Children's University Graduation Ceremony at the Hub in Doncaster. Seventy one of our children 'graduated', having achieved at least 30 hours of extra-curricular learning. This year our graduates have achieved an amazing 9 400 hours of extracurricular learning. Wow! Well done to all our graduates, and a special mention to Matilda R who has achieved her aim of over 1000 hours. She has now achieved the highest award of Gold Fellowship.

Year 6 Residential Visit to Northumberland Well done to our Year 6 pupils, who returned from their residential visit to Northumberland with many tales of fun and adventures. The children had a very busy four days, which included a visit to Alnwick Castle and a broomstick workshop, a boat trip to the Farne Islands landing on Inner Farne and visits to Dunstanburgh Castle, Vindolanda and Beamish Museum. The children stayed in Seahouses in a hotel next to the beach so evening activities included cricket, paddling in the very cold sea and playing games on the beautiful sandy beach. Many adults at the venues we visited commented on the interest and enthusiasm of the children, as well as their excellent behaviour and polite manners, so well done to everyone.

AcSEED Award (Supporting Emotional Wellbeing in Schools) We are very proud to share that we have met the national AcSEED criteria for emotional wellbeing and mental health support, and we have therefore been accredited with the AcSEED Award. Copley Junior is the first primary/junior school in Yorkshire to be awarded the AcSEED accreditation! The external AcSEED review team reported back to us to share that they were particularly impressed with many aspects of our work including that of our Anti-Bullying Ambassador pupil team, our peer mentoring group the Mini Life Coaches and the work of our PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education) lead Miss Wright. Well done to everyone! Times Tables ‘Rock Wrangle’ After a year of practising our times tables, we enjoyed the fun, excitement and high tension of our ‘Rock Wrangle’. This saw year group competitions against the clock, supported by rock music backing tracks and our rock star audience of children – who were very active and vocal in their support! The year group finalists all received a certificate and the year group winners were presented with an engraved gold medal. After a final tense round, our 2019 Times Tables Rock Star winner was announced as Afreen N in Year 6. We look forward to sharing more school news soon. E.A. Crayton Head teacher

Doncaster Rambler’s
A Sprotborough Stroll or Cadeby Crawl or Melton Meander I got déjà vu this morning arriving, at the car park alongside the River Don near the Boat Inn. Seemed like only yesterday I’d been on this exact same spot, but it was back in May, when we did a short Thursday walk from here. Today was different, today would be one of our regular monthly ‘mid-range’ walks of about eight miles. Looking about I noticed loads of familiar faces! Some regular ramblers, some regular Thursday walkers, even a few from the occasional Sunday stroll. Word is slowly getting around, and today’s wonder atracted a crowd of sixteen. Now we Ramblers are obsessed with the weather, so today was no different, “Is it warm enough for shorts, and do we need to stow away some wet weather gear?” Luckily we came prepared. Lee our walk leader who planned this circular route began by taking us South West along a forest edge to Sprotborough Flash Nature Reserve, where we picked up the Trans Pennine Trail towards the magnificent Conisbrough Viaduct. By now drizzle was in the air, and with our backs to the wind we headed North West then North through fields of barley and poppy towards Cadeby. On route we learned Barley comes in either two row or four row ears! Continuing North along Cadely Lane we made our way to the collage gates at High Melton for a refreshment break. Fully rested we made our way North across Ox Pasture towards Melton Wood Country Park, a haven for dog walkers, which reminds me we had one canine with us today, and well behaved she was too, even off the lead. We make a big thing about the social side of walking in groups, and it was seen in action today, as we all mixed and mingle with one another, talking politics, leisure, the weather, whatever. As a consequence, the group often broke up, which is why back marking, in this case by Rob Elvidge, is such an important role of our troupe. By now brollies had come down, as we made to right turn in the centre of the park, to head East along a metalised track before making another right passed Fox Flat Plantation, with wind turbines behind us and the start point ahead. A quick march through the outskirts, then passing Sprotbrough Country Club before descending some well maintained steps brought us safely back to our cars. Great walk Lee By Peter Rowsell For more information about the Doncaster Ramblers and future activity please visit our Home Page and download full copy of our walk programme https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/walks/walks-programme-printed-version.html And follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/ where GPS Maps of many of
