Welcome
to the December issue of
Sprotbrough Arrow As we prepare to say good bye to 2021 it’s great to see the Arrow packed once more with our usual Christmas events and some new ones too. How lovely it is to be able to enjoy Christmas as we normally would without the restrictions in place this time last year. Hoping everyone continues to keep safe, I have just had my covid booster, and apart from a sore arm for 24 hours, all went well. Whatever your plans are this Christmas, I hope you have a wonderful time with those you love. The January issue deadline is very early due to the Christmas break, please let me have your adverts and community information no later than Wednesday 8th December2021 Merry Christmas 2021 style Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk arrowpublications.co.uk

Can hardly believe we are into the last month of 2021 already. This is just a reminder that our Memory Tree will take place in the Frenchgate Centre from Monday, 29th November until Tuesday, 21st December. Our stall will be downstairs adjacent to Boots and will be open from 10.00am to 3.00pm every day except Sundays. We have some new items for sale as well as the familiar ones which you can purchase in memory of a loved one. We will also have heart-shaped labels available on which to write a message and hang on the Christmas tree in the Centre. We look forward to seeing you all. We are also in discussions with Doncaster Royal Infirmary with a view to purchasing a piece of equipment for our local GP surgeries. Talks are still in the early stages, but we will hopefully be able to give you more information next month. Should you need to get in touch with us our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. We have details on our website regarding forthcoming events including the annual Christmas concert at Doncaster Minster. We hope you all have a lovely Christmas and wish you a happy and healthy 2022. Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us in any way, especially during the pandemic. We really do appreciate you all.

DONCASTER RAMBLERS
We did this walk several times before, the latest in May 2021 when we were accosted by a herd of Friesian calves curious to get into our rucksacks. On another occasion part of the route was closed due to engineering works, but we were advised to go ahead anyway. Then there was the original route over the spoil heap to reach Torne FB, and that was like walking on the moon. All of which made for a bit of apprehension as seven of us gathered outside the White Rose Pub for a ten-o-clock start. Then the phone range “Can I come, I love walking I’ll be there in 15” “Make it 10 I replied, and we’ll wait” We at Doncaster Ramblers never turn away a willing walker, and in fact today along with an anxious late comer we also had a quest from Plymouth Ramblers spending a few days in South Yorkshire. So, there were eight. It was agreed we’d forgo the moonscape trek in favour of a circumnavigation of the slag heap, which was beginning to hide its origins beneath rows of newly cultivated trees. Everyone was in good spirits, and we soon forgot the morning chill which greeted us at ten. There are numerous possibilities getting round but “Rossington 14” https://www.doncaster.gov.uk/maps/ walking-map has become the defined route. Public rights of way give access to walkers, riders, and cyclists but not motorists, although one made the attempt but failed (see photo). Crossing the FB over the River Thorne the walk along Carr Bank became a trial by puddle and our boots only getting a clean up as we made our way along the grassy Egg Lane. Egg Lane does not qualify as a RoW although the final stretch across fields does, “Wadworth 4” leading to Wellingley Grange a small hamlet where we stopped for ten by a wall sheltering from the wind and warmed by the sun. Then there was no where else to go but along Wellingley Lane and the long, very long Stancil Lane to Stancil (where else) where Sue a naturalist gave a short lecture on sugar beet. Eager though we were to learn, we were also eager to get on the final leg, “Wadworth 6” and “Rossington 11” where previously it was the cows that distracted this time mushrooms which Tony was eager to forage though we all declined an invite to dinner! Although the RoW at this stage went diagonally across fields the established route went around the field edges, but all routes lead to Hunsters Flat Lane and the heart of New Rossington “The Crescent” which is dissected by Central Drive with both fine and neglected properties. Back at the start and time to reflect, “Was this a walk that I wanted, and where will the Doncaster Ramblers be taking me next?” Please visit our website https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/ for latest information, including future activity. Also follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/ for details of past Rambler outings. Remember while out observe the Countryside Code and give way to other walkers.

NEWS FROM RICHMOND HILL
It’s a 10 from Richmond Hill – keeeeep reading! We were excited to raise £341.70 by all at Richmond Hill to support Young Minds through the ‘Hello Yellow’ campaign and ‘Take 10 to Read’. Take 10 to Read saw our children taking up 10 minutes in the day to read, which is known to be good for mental health and wellbeing - no matter what activity they were engaged in. Thank you to our school nurses who were in school that day giving the flu immunisations, whilst one of our children joined in with the activity! Supporting our Local Library Our Reception children have enjoyed a visit to our local Sprotbrough Library. The staff helped to launch their new topic - what a wonderful experience they had, only a walk away. A Significant Visit With educational visits resuming, our Year 2 children had the opportunity to visit Danum Gallery, Library and Museum. As they have been studying significant people through their History Topic, this room was especially interesting to them with an exhibition of 20 significant women in history.

We shall remember them At Richmond Hill we have been marking Remembrance Day in a variety of ways. As it has been 100 years since the nation’s collective remembrance celebrations were brought together. Our children, with the help of our Y6 teacher Mrs Dugdale, have produced a wonderful video available to view on our website in the Twitter feed. Year 3 have produced these wonderful poppies using photography mixed media. Raising Awareness To begin Anti-bullying week we have explored, alongside ‘One Kind Word’ which is this year’s focus – ‘being different but the same’. We chose to hold a ‘Type Onesie Day’ to focus on our children who have a difference of diabetes. A brilliant pupil led assembly by the children in Y5 took place to mark Type 1 Diabetes awareness day. We think we have some children who will contribute to the medical profession in the future, their knowledge was amazing and raised awareness for all.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is a group of men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. Recent speakers have included Denis Ashton who talked about the Apollo Programme to take men to the moon. Dennis has been a regular visitor over the past few years and as usual gave an enlightening presentation. Other presentations have included amusing anecdotes about funerals and support dogs. We have also had a Special General Meeting to discuss changes to the constitution and elect officers for the coming year. The decisions from this meeting will be reported next month. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Des Parks (01302 856188), George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table.
REMEMBRANCE DAY POPPIES AT ST MARY’S Congratulations to everyone who took part in the poppy display at St Mary’s Church in Sprotbrough. Over 50 people took part in crocheting or knitting poppies and Carole Hall coordinated the final result. I am sure you will agree, it looked spectacular, such a beautiful visual reminder of this very special time of the year. Thank you.

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School During the second half of Autumn Term, children in key stage one have been learning about Victorians. On Thursday 11th and Monday 15th November, children in Year One and Year Two went to the DANUM Gallery in town. They participated in a Victorian workshop where the focus was the life of children during this era. They explored jobs, schooling and home life and what it would have been like for them if they had lived over 100 years ago. They handled genuine Victorian artefacts including a Guzunder (a local, Yorkshire term for a chamber pot! Because it Guz-under the bed ;)), early curling tongs, toys and games and carbolic soap. All children had the opportunity to wash a tea towel using a washboard, scrubbing brush and dolly peg! On Thursday 11th November, we held our annual Remembrance Service in school. At 11am the children fell silent to think about things that mean something to them. We were exceptionally proud of all our children who did a fabulous job of sitting quietly deep in thought paying their respects. On Friday 12th November, we welcomed an external company to perform Sleeping Beauty to children from all year groups. This is the first time in over two years we have been able to come together and experience a performance. Children were thoroughly engaged and eager to participate in songs and chants. Their reactions at such an experience with all their friends close by really was priceless! On Monday 15th November, children wore Odd Socks to school to mark the start of Kindness Week. Kindness is more important today than it has ever been. The isolation of the last year has underlined how little acts of consideration can break down barriers and brighten the lives of the people around
Children in all year groups have been thinking

about what it is to be kind to our friends and making pledges to each other.

Christmas Events
Last year, coronavirus restrictions meant we had to cancel our Christmas events. That is why, this year, we are starting early with the aim of spreading festive cheer far and wide. We will be hosting and attending a number of events, and hope that you will be able to join us. We are officially kick-starting our Christmas events on Saturday 20th November when we will be hosting our very own Christmas Fair. This is being held at the New Hall in Bawtry, and with over 20 stalls, you are sure to find something that tickles your fancy. The stalls will feature a wide variety of goodies from independent businesses. We will also have our own pet supplies stall, selling treats and merchandise. As well as this, there will be tea, coffee, hot chocolate, cake and mince pies available. For the children, there will be a face painting station and a Santa’s grotto. What type of Fair would it be without a raffle and tombola? We will be having both so there are lots of prizes to be won, plus a special bearbola with lots of teddies up for grabs for our younger customers. On the 5th December, we will be at two separate events and will have a stall at each – the Bawtry Christmas Market and the Christmas Fair at Doncaster Lawn Tennis Club. At Bawtry Christmas Market, you’ll be able to find us situated in the Crown Hotel main car park from 12pm until 6pm. We’ll also be at the Doncaster Lawn Tennis Club Christmas Fair from 12pm until 6pm. At both events, we will be selling Christmas treats for your furry friends, as well as sweet treats for you too. There will be Christmas boxes made up for the dogs and cats, plus some every day essentials for your pet. For the humans, there will be hot chocolate reindeer and chocolate stirrers, as well as a range of merchandise. These events are the perfect chance for you to grab yourself one of our 2022 rescue animal calendars or alternatively, they will make a great stocking filler for a friend or loved one. Each month is represented by a gorgeous animal that was adopted from our animal centre. The Tennis Club has lots of events planned throughout the day to ensure all ages are kept satisfied, such as fairground rides, a live brass band, and a Santa Claus experience. Whilst the children are playing on the rides, parents can enjoy the community spirit in a fun family atmosphere, drinking mulled wine and indulging in cakes and mince pies. At 4pm, the Christmas lights will be turned on with lots of photo opportunities so you can remember the day forever. We hope that you will be able to join us at one of our Christmas events. In doing so, you will be helping to raise much needed funds for our RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch. In addition to these events, we will also be relaunching our much-loved ‘Stock the Sleigh’ annual appeal. From Thursday 2nd December, we invite keen animal lovers and RSPCA supporters to donate items that will benefit the animals in our care. These items can come in a variety of forms: Food, Bedding, Toys and Treats. The animals will also benefit from financial donations and appreciate any items purchased from our Amazon wish list. There are many ways that your vital donations can reach us. Items can be dropped off at our animal centre located on Great North Road, DN10 6DE. Alternatively, they can be safely left at one of our charity shops. For anyone who is unable to reach these locations, you can still support us by purchasing an item from our Amazon wish list. There are many ways to help RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch with their mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals, including volunteering, leaving a legacy, donating cash or goods, sponsoring them through their Safe Haven programme and attending our events. They have charity shops at Bawtry, Maltby, Rossington and Thorne, as well as an EBay and online shops. At the Animal Centre, they rehome the animals in their care and have a pet supplies store on site and online for all your requirements. They also provide a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. To donate £5, text ‘RSPCADRB’ to 70085.
