Welcome to the December issue of the Sprotbrough

Arrow.

Apparently, we will soon be saying goodbye to the warmest year on record. Let’s hope we don’t pay for it over the winter months with Arctic conditions! We all like a bit of seasonal weather (but just a bit). This month’s issue has lots of information on all the local Christmas fayres, activities and events as well as an update from the local primary schools on what everyone has been up to this month. As always, the schools will be busy in December with plays and concerts so we look forward to finding out about it all in the January issue. I hope everyone enjoys the fun and excitement of this festive month but please, if you can, spare a thought for our elderly neighbours who may not have any visitors this Christmas.

The deadline for the January issue will be Monday 12th December. The Arrow will be delivered the last full weekend in December. I Want to Buy Your

This cute boy is Jools, a four year old Jack Russell Terrier. Jools is great with peoplevery friendly, but a bit shy at first. He is very well-behaved and loves to play ball! He is not good with other dogs or cats, so would need to be the only pet in a home with older children. Jools is neutered and fully vaccinated. If you are interested in meeting this smashing boy, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705.

RAISING FUNDS FOR MACMILLAN We wanted to do something different for this year’s Harvest Festival. So we came up with the idea to get our children to gather the ingredients to make cakes and buns to sell to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. We raised a phenomenal total of £335 for this very worthy cause. CHILDREN IN NEED -Our nursery children loved raising money for Pudsey Bear!

@ the rear of Jay Cee Autos Enthralling Experience Dyzelle Sutherland, a classically trained violinist and Gary Hammond a percussionist with the ability to play over 600 different kinds of instrument, recently visited Richmond Hill Primary Academy. They performed an interactive music piece ‘Yana’s Long Journey’ which showcases the violin and introduces children to high quality pieces from different musical cultures. Our younger children followed 7 year old Yana as she flees Syria with her family and begins the long journey in search of a new place to call home. Opus 100 We are delighted to be part of Ridgewood School’s vision to create a school band – Opus 100. As one of their partner primaries some of our pupils are taking the lead in the brass and the percussion sections!

Sprotbrough Orchard News On the last day of Autumn Term 1, we celebrated our Harvest Festival with a special assembly led by our chair of governors, Mr Banks. He told a story with wooden figures to demonstrate to the children the effect of having no food. We donated our collection to the M25 Housing and Support Group in Doncaster and they were greatly received.

On Monday 31st October, the first day of Autumn Term 2, Mary and Bhadri from Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS) came into school to talk to the children about the celebration of Diwali. Each class had a workshop where they saw traditional rangoli patterns, Hindu clothing and heard the story of Rama and Sita. From this, children

have produced mehndi pattern artwork and retold the Diwali story. We would like to extend our thanks to Mary and Bhadri for their efforts here at Orchard. All children in school have made a clay diva lamp which they will be able to bring home closer to the Christmas holidays. They enjoyed moulding the clay and designing them using different tools and techniques. Linking to our centre of interest this half term, Year Two children have investigated the effects of heat on different materials. They looked at the principles of fair testing and observed closely what happened to each material as it was heated. They then recorded their findings and discussed at length the different effects. On Thursday 10th November, Rev. Amanda from St. Mary’s Church came to conduct a Remembrance assembly in honour of the veterans who fought in various wars over time. Our children participated in holding a two minute silence to mark the occasion on Friday 11th November. All children were very respectful and mature about this and we are very proud of them all for their achievement. On Friday 18th November we will be celebrating Children in Need to raise money for a well deserving charity. Keep your eyes peeled for our happenings in next month’s issue!

School News from Copley Junior School Anti-Bullying Week Our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors have done a fantastic job as they planned and led activities across school to promote National Anti-Bullying Week. The Magic Club of Great Britain presented a magic show that promoted the anti-bullying message. Our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors organised different activities for every year group and led our assembly to share their PowerPoint presentation. We are very proud of our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors team; children promoting the importance of a friendly and caring school helps to maintain our excellent standards of behaviour. Year 3 launched their new creative learning project on 'Predator' with an exciting visit to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. The day included a tour of the Wildlife Park, an outdoor 'Deadly Bugs' teaching session and an indoor teaching session where children could handle minibeasts and even stroke a snake! Teachers reported that the children's behaviour was exemplary, so well done to everyone in Year 3! Remembrance Day Thank you to everyone who contributed to our British Legion Poppy Appeal. All the children wrote their names on a poppy to create our display.

Year 6 – ‘A Child’s War’

In November, Year 6 children from Copley Junior School were evacuated from Doncaster to Murton Park. On arrival, they were met by an evacuation officer who escorted them to the village hall. During their visit, children experienced what life was like for children during World War Two. Activities included: washing and ironing clothes; making farmhouse crunch and butter; blast taping windows; carpet making; air raid drills and most children’s favourite - extinguishing a small incendiary bomb! Back at school Year 6 have had a busy time, learning all about what life was like for children living through World War Two. After two fun-filled sessions of painting silhouettes of London during the Blitz and creating large A1 posters, the children enjoyed learning about evacuation and produced excellent descriptive recounts, focusing on characterisation and speech. They were also able to use emotive language, which they had been working on in class, to create beautiful poems that included a variety of similes, metaphors and personification. Project work has included making Anderson shelters and baking using war time rations.

Children in Need Last month we launched our Times Tables Rockstars initiative to motivate children to learn their times tables and to have lots of fun at the same time. We decided that we would raise money by dressing as rock stars for Children in Need. As you can see from the photos, the children did this in great style! We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton
