Welcome to the December

Issue of the The Arrow this month is packed with ideas to help get you in the mood for Christmas. We have visits to Father Christmas, Christmas craft events, fayres, carol singing, and much more. What ever you plan to do this season, I hope it’s a jolly one. On a more sombre note, November seen one of the most tragic loss of lives in Doncaster for some time. The whole Doncaster community came together to offer support and condolences to the families and friends who have lost their loved ones. All five teenagers who lost their lives were past or present students of Danum Academy in Armthorpe. The Head Teacher, Rebecca Staples and her team of staff have done an amazing job, opening the school on Sunday morning as soon as they were aware of the news, offering support to anyone who needed it and providing a source of comfort to students and their families as well as staff within school who have known these people for so long. Area Dean, Rev’d Neil Redeyoff from the Finningley, Auckley and Blaxton Parish offered his support along with other local clergy. Doncaster has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons lately, it’s inspiring to see what our community is capable of when needed. The deadline for the January issue for advertising and articles is Wednesday 10th December. The January Arrow will be delivered between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve.

Merry Christmas

School News from

Copley Junior School

Copley Superheroes!

Copley Junior was full of superheroes on the day of Children in Need. We enjoyed a disco catwalk (teachers too!) at the end of the day so that everyone could showcase their costume. Thank you to everyone who brought a donation on the day, helping us to raise over £200 for Children in Need.

2014 Bake Off Winner

Copley Bake Off Champion 2014 Our House leadership teams organised a Bake Off Competition over the half term holiday. Two of our House Captains dressed up (see ‘Paul Hollywood’ and ‘Mary Berry’ below) for the occasion. Here is their description of the winning entry. “Well done to the Copley ‘Bake Off’ Champion 2014. The winning entry was called ‘Cookie Monster’. We chose this as our championship bake for the following reasons… The bun texture was light and fluffy and the flavour combinations, although unusual, complemented each other perfectly. The cookie in

the Cookie Monster’s mouth gave a tasty crunch which added to the overall texture. The cookie monster bun had a unique look as well as flavour. Best of all, the bun had no soggy bottom!” From Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton

HOW MUCH DO YOU CARE ABOUT THE DON GORGE? It’s a well-known fact that we only miss something when it’s gone and then we make a great deal of fuss. The Don Gorge isn’t likely to disappear anytime soon, but it might change for the worse, which might be just as bad, and will we all complain then? It’s a question that keeps coming into my mind. The Don Gorge Community Group has been running since the beginning of 2007 and existed in a different form for a long time before that. But in 2007, we began with a new Constitution and two main aims: To promote for the benefit of the public, and to advance the education of the public, in the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment of the area known as ‘The Don Gorge“. During its life, the Group has been responsible for setting up a group of conservation volunteers which meets on a fortnightly basis, has produced an Education Pack for primary-aged children, a leaflet about the Gorge and a booklet of ‘Walks from Warmsworth’. It has organised walks, put up displays at galas, etc, and participated in a Park and Float and other fun days. We were involved in the Lock Open Day and have attended meetings for the fish and eel pass throughout its planning and creation and have been listened to as we held out for changes which would be sympathetic to the area rather than detrimental. We feel we have succeeded in a good many of our aims, but still we have failed in the one great thing that the area continues to need: Parking. We still haven’t given up, but it is very dispiriting going over the same old ground again and again. We also worry about continuity and sustainability of the group. We are all getting older, but some are older than others and some of us would like a bit more help from YOU. At present we have no Treasurer, no community representatives from Warmsworth and more conservation volunteers are always needed. We have no education programme because we have no-one capable of fulfilling such a role or with the enthusiasm and energy to give it a go. Wouldn’t it be great to have people falling over themselves to come on board and help us? I know there are other groups within our community and that many people are already involved in them, but there must be people out there who are dying to get involved with something worthwhile, who really value the Don Gorge as the great resource it is and want to protect it. So, how much do you care about the Don Gorge? I’d love to hear from you. Remembrance Commemorations at Richmond Hill

The Remembrance Commemorations at our school this year had an added poignancy, marking the centenary of the outbreak of World War One. Our outdoor ceremony was very moving and a fitting tribute where pupils planted poppies in remembrance and pupils were commended for the exceptional way they conducted themselves, they were a credit to the school! Jeff Swift from the British Legion joins us every year to be part of our service. We always appreciate his participation as it is a good way for the children to understand why we all should never forget. And finally - the Team from ITV who came to school to cover the event were very impressed with Richmond Hill. Included in one of their numerous televised national and local reports was this comment “We’ve seen an outstanding amount of respect shown here today from such young children”.

Children In Need Batman, Supergirl and Iron Man battled it out on the corridors of Richmond Hill when all manner of Super Heroes flew in as part of our fundraising for Children in Need.

Cupcakes Galore! The theme for this year’s Bake Off was ‘Cupcake Carnival’. Entries into the competition were exceptional with Cayden Graham, Isabel Robinson and Olivia Goldsmith being voted by the parents and pupils as the crème de la crème!
