Welcome to the December issue of

The Sprotbrough Arrow.

Ho Ho Ho… It’s the month of mince pies! Oh how I love December (and mince pies). This month’s Arrow has all the latest information on what’s on this month. Yorkshire Wildlife Park have their Christmas Fair over 2 weekends in December, starting Saturday 7th December and features live entertainment and music as well as a festive pantomime. Check their website for details www.yorkshirewildlifepark.com. The recent floods have dominated the news recently, the communities affected have our thoughts and wishes for a rapid recovery. It’s great to see local people doing what they can to help with transporting donations. The deadline for the January issue is Wednesday 11th December. The January issue will be distributed between Boxing Day and New years Eve. Look out for our Black Friday advertising deal which will appear on Facebook, Friday 29th November! facebook@arrowmags

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At this meeting we have a speaker, their subjects covering a wide variety of interests. (see www.probusonline.org/ danum for the ongoing programme). Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the Annual holiday which is usually in late June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Seaton play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. On Monday 21 October, Dave Adgar, who in his spare time is Chairman of the Friends of Doncaster Museums, gave this very informative talk about life in the Old West Berlin before the fall of the Berlin Wall. It included the time before the Wall when Berlin became a divided city as a result of World War 2. Dave described how the City had been divided up between the Allies (some of them) and that the then USSR has not wanted France to be included, And the only way that they were was by the British giving the French some of their allocated territory. Dave spoke from experience, having lived in Berlin when he was a teacher to the children of Births Forces based there. This gave the presentation a distinct 'you were there feel'. This was a very interesting talk about a time when there was a very different political climate. The Ladies’ and Guests Lunch was held at the Old Bell, Barmby Moor on Thursday 24 October. It was a very enjoyable occasion as usual. Then on 4 November Mike Burdis (retired Chief Superintendent of Police in South Yorkshire) made a very thought provoking presentation about the “Stephen Lawrence Enquiry”. After outlining the facts about the murder of Stephen Lawrence, Mike then went into the details of the police investigation which followed and the mistakes which were made. Many of the mistakes were apparently because of poor recording of the information gathered and lack of communication between the investigating officers. Mike noted that the Yorkshire Ripper enquiry had highlighted similar shortcomings and it had said that police forces should adhere to a strict protocol when faced with cases in which lots of information is gathered. It appeared that these lessons had either been forgotten or ignored during the Stephen Lawrence investigation. On 2 December Jane Breach will be giving a presentation about Drax Power Sation and the Members’ Christmas Lunch will take place on 16 December, both at Town Moor Golf Club. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Des Parks (01302 856188), George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information

December is usually a time of reflection (in between the hectic preparations for Christmas!) and we look back on a very busy year. With your help we were able to inform DRI at the beginning of the year that we had the money for another CT scanner. The new CT unit should be operational by March 2020 and we will keep you updated. In April we launched our prostate cancer appeal for a £150,000 biopsy machine, which at the time of writing (beginning of November) had reached £40,000. We are very fortunate to have the continuing support of so many groups, organisations and individuals who fundraise and offer help in many ways. Also our lovely friendly volunteers (we have no paid staff) who do so much during the year, without whose unstinting loyalty we would not be able to function. Our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre continues during December until Friday, 20th December. We are downstairs outside Boots from 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday. Please come along and see us, have a chat and buy a token in memory of your loved one. If you would like to get in touch with us our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. Thank you all so much for your generosity, friendship and help. Our charity strives to raise funds to help faster detection and improve cancer treatment for local people. We wish you all a very happy Christmas and hopefully a healthy New Year.

School News from Copley Junior School Year 5 Get It Wrapped! As part of their creative learning project on the ‘Pharaohs’, Year 5 visited Weston Park Museum in Sheffield. As well as touring the museum, children took part in a workshop to find out about the mummification process! Did you know that the Egyptians used to bury their slaves alive alongside their mummified bodies so that they would have a slave in the afterlife? This didn’t last long because the slaves would run away every time someone in the family fell ill. This is why they began making a ‘shabti’ (a small model of a slave) to be buried alongside their mummified remains. All of the children decided that making a ‘shabti’ was much kinder than being buried alive.

National Anti-Bullying Week The theme for this year’s National AntiBullying Week was ‘Change Starts With Us’. To launch the week we invited all children and staff to wear odd socks – as bright and oddly matched as possible! We used this theme to celebrate our individuality and to reflect that being different is ok. We enjoyed an Anti-Bullying Magic Show and showed a whole school ‘stop’ sign to show our commitment to ensuring there is no bullying in school. Well done to our Y6 Anti-Bullying Ambassadors who prepared a pupil-friendly antibullying leaflet to give to every child in school.

Express Events We invite parents/carers to regular ‘express’ events through the year when the children present (‘express’) their learning. So far this year, Year 3 parents have been invited to the Scrumdiddlyumptious café where they sampled the tasty fruit smoothies designed and created by the children; Year 4 showcased their Vikings project work, demonstrated how Viking guards led an attack and even encouraged parents to have a go and Year 5 led a very active and competitive event that challenged children's problem solving skills as they made rockets using limited materials in a given timescale. For our next express event, Year 6 will open the Copley Museum to share their learning about World War II. We look forward to sharing more school news soon. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club.

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club were out again on Sunday 3rd of November. The walks were really well attended with over 50 of us travelling to the Damflask area of the Peak District. A couple of walks were on offer, the A walk was around 11 miles and started at Lodge Moor, on the outskirts of Sheffield, we headed for the tree line above the Rivelin Valley and then went west along a path which runs very close to a steep edge above Fox Hagg. We soon reached Wyming Brook Nature Reserve to cross Ash Cabin Flat and New Hagg moor. Easy paths took us on a pleasant stroll to emerge later at Damflask Reservoir. From here we made our way to Stacey Bank and The Nags Head for a pint or two of Bradfield Brewery's locally brewed beer. Our thirst having been satiated, we continued along the north eastern flank of the reservoir to Low Bradfield and our awaiting coach. Our B walkers followed a very similar route but at a slightly lower level and shorter distance of just over 7 miles. They also took the opportunity to sample some of the excellent beers on offer at The Nags Head and had the added bonus of coffee at the Schoolhouse Cafe in Low Bradfield at the end of their walk. We are in the process of planning our 2020 programme of walks so if you are interested in joining us in the future and want to enjoy fresh air and exercise with like minded people, please check out our Facebook page or visit our website www.doncasterpathfinders.org.uk
