Welcome

to the February issue of

Sprotbrough Arrow Ooooh February, what have you in store for us? Snow? Sun? A new Prime Minister? Who knows… With the first school holiday of the year, Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Maise Maze has lots going on to keep everyone entertained throughout the week. Congratulations to Janet Graves who features in this month’s issue. Janet has started a drop in Café in Sprotbrough to support patients, carers, friends and relatives of those suffering from Brain Tumours. See p12 for the full article. Have you tried the Jazz Bar/Café in town? They have a special Valentine’s bottomless brunch menu which looks delicious. Sounds like the perfect way to celebrate with your other half, however, the other half is not essential! The March issue deadline is Wednesday 16th February. The magazines will be delivered the last full weekend in February. Best wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk arrowpublications.co.uk

Community News The Charity Christmas Concert organised by the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers and supported by The Co-op was fortunately able to go ahead on Saturday 18th December 2021 at Doncaster Minster. The concert once again featured performances by The Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers and Hatfield & Askern Colliery Band. The performers, The Minster staff, Co-op Food, Funeralcare and our local Co-op Member Pioneers all worked together both before the event and on the night to provide a wonderful evening's entertainment and individually wrapped festive refreshments and raffle prizes were once again provided by our local Coop stores. This was yet again a fantastic turnout by the people of Doncaster to support a great cause, Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust as they celebrate their 50th Anniversary year. Proceeds from the concert raised £1500 and a cheque was presented to members of the charity in Doncaster Minster on Monday 17th January 2022. The money will be put toward a new Skin Cancer Detection machine. Dorothy Miller, Chairman of the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers who organised the concert wished to extend her thanks to all involved in making this event such a highlight of the Christmas celebrations in Doncaster. From left to right - Dorothy Miller (Chair DWS + Coop Member Pioneer), Jenny Liddle (DCDT), Clive Howarth (Doncaster Minster) Yvonne Woodcock (DCDT), Tracy Clark (Coop Food), Elizabeth Taylor (DCDT) and Lyn Hunter Coop National Members Councillor.

Can't praise Matt's work enough. He fitted a kitchen for us about 12 months ago and we were so impressed we invited him back to panel our staircase and landing. We were not disappointed. His attention to detail is second to none. Matt is a true perfectionist and we would highly recommend his excellent skills to anyone.

Margaret, Tickhill.

Sprotbrough mum starts drop-in brain tumour support group after losing husband Mother of two Janet Graves, 59 from Sprotbrough, lost her husband Alastair in 2013 to an aggressive brain tumour. Ever since, Janet and her family and friends have tirelessly fundraised for Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity, the region’s leading charity dedicated to funding life-changing research and patient support. Her children have climbed Kilimanjaro, skydived and completed the Great North Run, while Janet regularly organises successful charity balls, cricket days and New Year parties. In total, Janet has helped raise over £30,000 for the charity to date. Janet was determined to raise funds “not only to support research but also to provide practical help for those going through the same difficulties as we did – not just for the person with the brain tumour but for those around them caring and trying to keep going.” This year, Janet is helping out the charity and its supporters in a new way. Instead of organising a party or running a marathon, she will be leading a Drop-In Café for patients, carers and loved ones in the Doncaster area.

Janet with her daughter Sarah and son Chris.

The Drop-In Café will afford patients and their relatives and friends a chance to chat, ask questions, enjoy refreshments and meet others in a similar situation. Sprotbrough Cricket Club has kindly offered free use of their venue to help Janet and the charity run the monthly group. Speaking about why she decided to run the drop-in, Janet said: “My family experienced the shock and devastation of losing my husband and father to our two children. Alastair suddenly was unable to continue working in the NHS when the grade 4 glioma became evident. I drove Alistair daily to Sheffield for medical interventions, but the emotional and practical support was not always there as we did not live close to the central services which were so precious and limited. “It was an unreal experience even for us as NHS professionals. I was only too aware that not everyone is able to ask questions and know the ‘pathways’ and minefields that face you. I wanted to do something to ease that for others. “I was so excited when I heard about the idea of the drop-in café because it gives an opportunity to meet up with others locally going through journeys of their own; it could provide a sound board, support network, advice; even just giving a reason to go out and socialise. I hope the groups evolve in a way that the members want them to and am very pleased that I can help.” The Doncaster Drop-In Café will take place at Sprotbrough Cricket Club on the last Friday of the month from 1-3pm, with the first session on Friday 28th January. For more information, go to yorksbtc.org.uk/drop-in-cafes Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity also offers a specific fortnightly bereavement support group, as well as monthly support meetups for patients and loved ones in the South Yorkshire area, wellbeing walks, patient grants and much more. Doncaster Rambler’s Cusworth Circular This walk in december felt like an early Christmas present. On the shortest day of the year and with the ever present threat of 'further restrictions' hanging in the air it provided a real tonic. Before the walk proper we met at Angela's house to enjoy seasonal fare of mince pies, sherry, flapjack, cake and port; with festive music playing in the background. Our cheerful chattering was then interrupted by the surprise arrival of a bag-piper (Janette's husband Terry) who serenaded us with Christmas tunes and Happy Birthday for Kim. It would have been easy to stay put but like the dedicated and disciplined walkers we are we assembled promptly at 10.00 to be briefed by Angela. And so it was that 21 suitably fortified walkers set off to do the 9 mile hike. Crossing the road we went through Cusworth village and, with the hall on our right, down the hill and along the far side of the lake. Then across the fields and under the motorway tunnel into Sprotborough. After crossing the road and the cricket field we went through the village and down the slope to the lock beside the Boat Inn where we had a coffee break. Then it was south along the river side and a sharp right and up into the woods to loop around Sprotborough Flash Nature Reserve; returning to the Boat Inn for a lunch stop. The afternoon half of the walk took us north by the river Don and then over the railway onto a short section of the Trans Pennine Trail back towards Cusworth Hall. A last loop around the lower ponds, up the hill, through the village and we were back at Angela's. Some stayed on to celebrate Kim's birthday with pizza at Cusworth Hall. Others just had a last mince pie before leaving for home. All left with a goody bag from Angela. Thanks go to everyone who provided food, drink and music. Thanks also go to those who provided good company along the way and to Neil for backmarking. But special thanks go to Angela for being an excellent leader and host. A Christmas Cracker of a day ! Charlie

Welcome to our first news of 2022. We are very happy to report that our Memory Tree during December made £3,943. It is testament to our wonderful supporters who every year visit us to make a donation in memory of loved ones and also those new to us. Hundreds also wrote messages to put on the Tree in the Centre which created a lot of interest. Our very grateful thanks to everyone who donated, whether it was pence or pounds. We would also like to sincerely thank all the management and staff at Frenchgate Shopping Centre, especially Karen and Abby, who have continued to support our charity over the years. Also our wonderful volunteers who willingly “manned” the stand on the run-up to Christmas. Amongst them was Thorne Rural Lions Group who help every year. Without all these volunteers the Memory Tree would not be possible. 2022 is a special year for our charity as we are celebrating our 50th anniversary. Since 1972 we have raised millions of pounds to buy various pieces of equipment for Doncaster Royal Infirmary and we also built and equipped St John’s Hospice in 1992. (The Hospice is now independent of DCDT and they have their own fundraising team.) All this would not have been possible without the generous help and donations from Doncaster and district residents, organisations, various groups and individuals. You are magnificent and we salute you all. If you have any fundraising ideas, especially in our 50th year, please do get in touch with us. Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. Since our inception in 1972 our charity remains completely run by volunteers. All our staff, whether Trustees, administrators or secretaries, are not paid. Also, your donations are spent locally which means you can see where your money goes. These are traditions we are proud of and ones we will continue to deliver.
