Over 1,000 animals given second chance 2019 was another great year for RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch with over 1,000 pets re-homed or wildlife rescued and released. The local animal charity continues to deliver against a vision to live in a world where all animals are respected and treated with compassion. In short, all animals should be valued and loved. The local RSPCA branch provides excellent care at its South Yorkshire Animal Centre, establishing a successful rehoming process, and promoting responsible pet ownership, and working to encourage a more positive, respectful and compassionate attitude towards all animals amongst the general public. The charitable work is made possible by the fundraising efforts of the community. RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch needs to raise 95% of their own funds and receive no government or lottery funding. Fundraising events coming up in 2020 include the annual Easter egg hunt and fun dog show. Keep up to date at www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk. Other services include microchipping, dog training, secure exercise areas and financial assistance for the welfare and neutering of pets. The Branch provides a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pet. There are many ways to help your local RSPCA, including volunteering, donating cash or goods, sponsoring the Safe Haven programme and attending events. There are charity shops at Bawtry, Maltby, Rossington and Thorne as well as an EBay shop. At the Animal Centre, there is a pet supplies store. To donate £5, text ‘RSPCADRB’ to 70085.

Fishlake after the flooding:

After the devastation of the floods on Friday 8 November 2019 which saw around 80% of properties in the village affected, the Fishlake community continues to deal with the challenge of returning to normal. It has undoubtedly been a very challenging, difficult time for all concerned. They have seen a visit from The Prime Minister, HRH The Prince of Wales and also received coverage from lots of local and national media. ‘We are proud as a community HRH The Prince of Wales and Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire meeting emergency workers in Fishlake, December 2019. of how we have pulled together and supported each other and we will continue to do so. We are hugely grateful for the support shown to us by neighbouring villages and we are overwhelmed by the number of messages of support received from across the country. There is still a long way to go before we are anything like back to normal. We need to persist with information as to how and why this happened and to work to prevent this happening again’. Pam Webb, Fishlake business owner. St Cuthbert's Church, The Old Butcher's Café and the Hare and Hounds have all done a tremendous job supporting the community as well as the essential/emergency workers who visited the village. Our thoughts are very much with those residents who are still unable to return to their homes. We hope life returns to normal for everyone as soon as possible and that we all continue to support the businesses there. Work to find a solution is ongoing, all must be done to avoid this disaster ever happening again.

News From Orchard School To kick start the new term here at Orchard, the children had a good think about New Year resolutions. They discussed the celebrations they had had at home to welcome the New Year and conducted some research on what a resolution is. After much thought, here are some examples of what they would like to get better at, and improve on, in 2020. On Wednesday 8th January the Space Dome visited us. Essentially, it is a HUGE, inflatable, silver, shiny dome that almost touched the hall ceiling! The children were very excited to see the happenings inside. A projector cast images onto the curved backdrop to imitate being in space and gave a very realistic 3D experience. Children learnt lots of new information about space travel, the planets and stars in our solar system. Lots of them are eager to now find the Big Dipper in the night sky! Each Wednesday and Friday lunch time, sports coaches come to get our children active. They organise games and activities centred on team spirit and what it takes to be a good team player, ball skills and, of course, having lots of fun! We would like to extend our thanks to Complete Coaching Solutions for their involvement in keeping us on our toes.

Recently, parents have been invited to register for Maths with Parents to support with home learning. This online platform encourages ‘parents have the power to help their children love learning’. Through short video clips and practical, engaging tasks, learning at home can be fun and linked to the real world. We would like to congratulate our Winter Winners for completing all the activities set in the autumn term. This is brilliant work on their part engaging with 100% of the content. Certificates have been printed and presented to the winners during a dedicated assembly. We will be looking at supporting e-Safety day on 11th February 2020. Staff will be running an e-Safety workshop for parents to help support children at home with keeping safe online too. All Orchard parents would be welcome to attend the workshop at 14.45 on Tuesday 4th February

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club Sunday 12th January was the first walk of the year for Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club. The weather was pretty dismal when we set off to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park but we were all looking forward to some fresh air after the excesses of Christmas. Luckily we were rewarded with some sunshine later in the day, as well as a stunning rainbow. Our 11 mile A walk started by walking through the Park where we saw Sculptures by Damien Hurst, Sir Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and others exhibited in the Park. We continued along the edge of Bretton Hall and Bretton Park, picking up the Dearne Way and continued along the Kirklees Way towards Gillcar Farm, with some nice views over the valley and open countryside. We then picked up the Wakefield Way with a mixture of farms, open fields, hedgerows, stepping stones over a stream and woodland. We stopped off at The Reindeer Inn at Overton for a beer and then took a fairly direct route back to the Sculpture Park. Our B walkers followed a similar route which meant they also had the opportunity to see some of the sculptures on display. They then took a different route to a pub stop at the White Horse pub at Emley for a refreshing drink. As the weather had cleared, there were great views of the mast at Emley to enjoy. Although very muddy and a bit on the cold side we all enjoyed the first walk of 2020. We welcome new walkers so if you are interested in joining us, we are off to the Southwell area on 9th February and will be completing part of the Wolds Way on 9th March. For details about how to get in touch, please check out our Facebook page or website www.doncasterpathfinders.org.uk. Our programme for remainder of the year has been finalised and can also be found on Facebook or on our website.

School News from Copley Junior School Young Voices Concert Once again, our enthusiastic Year 5 and 6 choir of over 60 children took part in the Young Voices Concert at Sheffield Arena. After months of practising the songs and dances, the children were very excited to attend the afternoon rehearsal, followed by the concert itself. The whole performance with the dancers and vocalists was amazing, not to mention of course the incredible 8000 children in the Young Voices choir. We greatly appreciate that so many parents/carers and relatives were able to come in the evening to enjoy the performance. Well done to all the children for putting in so much effort to learn the songs and dance moves. As usual, the children were an absolute credit to the school with their enthusiasm and excellent behaviour.

Year 3 Gods and Goddesses Children in Year 3 launched their new project on ‘Gods and Mortals’ by dressing up as Ancient Greeks. Well done to all the children for your creative costumes. Year 4 Training for the Roman Army To launch their new creative learning project on ‘I am Warrior’, museum staff from Murton Park visited school. Children enjoyed an exciting day full of activities including a themed presentation and interactive talk, illustrated with a wide range of authentic artefacts. This was followed with craft and artefact handling activities and an active session practising preparations for a Roman battle. By the end of the day, all children successfully passed their Diploma and are all now fierce members of the Roman Army!

Doncaster Rambler’s

A Local walk from Newington (Nr Bawtry)

To say I was impressed is an understatement, what was it? Brian Swift (our walk leader’s) charm, or the adventurous route he’d picked though forest and field, or maybe those new year resolutions we all promise to keep? But by heck, to get twenty-eight out on Thursday is a record. What’s brilliant is that among the familiar faces there were loads of first times, giving it a go, and you know what, they were loving it! Heading west from the Ship Inn on Newington Road we reached the T Junction with Bawtry Rd A614 then headed north into Austerfield (Birthplace of William Bradford one of the Mayflower Pilgrims who celebrate their 400th anniversary in 2020). After a short stretch passing roadside houses, we took a left turn at a footpath sign to head into woodland, initially passing the factory of Bawtry Carbon, (Manufacturer and 100% exporter of carbon blocks for the aluminium industries) of which one of our group was proud to be part. There was still a very distinct feel of winter about, chill in the air, bare trees, leaves everywhere, but the atmosphere was electric, just being out! Several high-speed trains passed as we walked adjacent to the main line, but glad we were going at our own pace. At the Great North Road A638 we headed a short way north before turning right onto High Field Lane. Much of the surrounding area had been quarried for sand and gravel, but has long been returned to nature, and popular with dog walkers. High Fields Lane ends at a T junction with the A614 where we turned right heading back towards Austerfield, but before reaching the centre, we turned left at a way-marker onto Low Common Lane (said to be the site of some of the earliest dwellings in Austerfield) which led to the village common, and the ideal spot (despite having only a single bench) for a break.

22

Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements

Continuing north on Low Common Lane, we soon reached the edge of Bawtry Golf Club, where a few were swinging their 9 irons but thankfully not at us. We continued on our way across first one, and then a second footbridge (GR SK671954) from where our colleague Hilda, and several others managed after months if not years, to get an ancient footpath reinstated. Today we celebrate being the first group of Ramblers to march this footpath south Newington. This offers both Mission and Austerfield residence short safe local walks. We completed our ramble in 2hrs 15min, and covered 4.86miles. A big huge thank you to everyone who turned out to support Doncaster Ramblers local Thursday walks. For more information about the Doncaster Ramblers and future activity please visit our Home Page and download full copy of our walk programme https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/walks/walks-programme-printed-version.html And follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/ where GPS Maps of many of our past walks can also be found.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB danum probus.co.uk Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At this meeting we have a speaker whose subjects cover a wide variety of interests, the programme can be found on our website, www.danumprobus.co.uk. Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the annual holiday which is usually in early June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Section play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. We finished off our meetings in 2019 with an enjoyable Christmas Lunch at the Golf Club which featured the ‘ceremonial/ cutting of the Club’s 40th Anniversary Cake. We spent a very enjoyable three hours. Then at our first meeting in the New Year on 6 January Roy Gunson was our speaker which “The Uncertainty of Mr Heisenberg”. The was a presentation about the German theoretical physicist, Werner Heisenberg. Heisenberg is celebrated for his work on quantum mechanics including his famous paper relating to his Uncertainty Principle. During the 1930’s, he was one of the German physicist who did not leave Germany because of Nazi persecution, and became a member of the team trying to build a German atom bomb. His role is to a certain extent ambiguous because he took part in the research, but there are suggestions that he tried to hinder progress. What is not denied is that he loved the limelight, and that this might have been helped by his wife’s friendship with Himmler’s wife.

In February our speaker on Monday 3 February is Brian Downes with “Remap Doncaster Panel”, and the subject for Monday 17 February is “The Journal of Amelia Stanforth - Firbeck Hall”.
