Community News THE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE IS COMING TO THE DON GORGE

As I’m sure you are aware, the second day of this event is coming from Otley to Doncaster on Saturday 30 April 2016. The route is coming via High Melton, Cadeby, down Nursery Lane, over the canal and river bridges, up the hairpin bend and on to do two circuits of Conisbrough Castle before going on its way to Tickhill, Bawtry and hence back to Doncaster. There will also be two identical races for men and women starting at approx. 12 noon and ending about 5.30 pm.

. Keep an eye on Streetlife.com and our blog, http:// dongorgecommunitygroup.blogspot.com We hope to set up a Facebook and Twitter Account soon. Please contact me if you want to be involved in any way. Liz Reeve, Email: lizreeve@dongorgecommunitygroup.com; Tel: 01302 313030

I have agreed to co-ordinate all activities taking place in the Don Gorge on that day and hope it will be the biggest party ever seen at Lower Sprotbrough, accommodating and entertaining what could be thousands of people, all vying for the best spot to see Bradley Wiggins’ team and all the other riders. We need your help. Imagine the best community party you have ever been to and think what activities you would like to see included and then be prepared to organise them. Artists, musicians and businesses who have something to offer are more than welcome to contribute or sponsor events. I hope to have a meeting of all those who come forward to help in the not too distant future and hope I will not be disappointed. The colours of the race will be blue and yellow. Knitted or sewn bunting in those colours will be required along the route and posters will need to be designed. Old bikes can be painted and positioned around the area nearer the time, hopefully, entertainment will be on hand throughout the day. More information will become available as time goes on, but at this stage we need to get the information out and ideas of what and how we can make it a great all-age event.

New Year, New Home? Try a better way to sell your home. Residents across Doncaster, Sprotbrough and the Woodlands can now benefit from a quicker, no-nonsense way to sell their home with a new local service. A Doncaster branch of Open Door Auctions has been launched by Alistair Boyd-Meaney from Misson offering an innovative, modern approach to property sales. Alistair has teamed up with ex-Nottingham Forrest football player Lee Cowling to start the business and help speed up local house sales, with average sale times in Doncaster currently at 30 weeks. It’s perfect timing as the New Year is often a great time for people looking to sell and buy property. Alistair said: “Sellers on the traditional open market often struggle so fast, transparent property auctions are becoming an increasingly popular choice. We know there’s a real demand for this proven, new way to sell.” For more information about Open Door or to arrange a free property valuation, call 01302 965 360 or email doncaster@opendoorauctions.co.uk.

School News from

Copley Junior School Gods and Mortals in Year 3 Year 3 launched their new project on Gods and Mortals, by dressing as the Ancient Greeks for the day. ‘I am Warrior’ Year 4 started their project on ‘I am Warrior’ with a workshop day in school, led by museum staff from Murton Park. The children enjoyed handling Roman artefacts, playing Roman board games, finding out about the life of a Roman soldier, making clay lamps and even leading a battle charge!

Children’s University

We are pleased to share that Copley Junior School is now a learning destination for the Children’s University. Children's University is an opportunity for children to be rewarded for spending time involved in positive activities outside normal school hours. Children's University is an exciting way for children to learn by having fun and doing things they enjoy! Children record each hour that they do in an extra curricular activity in their Children's University 'Passport to Learning'. Children are encouraged to work towards national certificates that are issued from the Children’s University. Certificates can be awarded up to 1000 hours. The first award starts with the bronze certificate at the Undergraduate level of 30 hours of learning. When children accumulate enough hours to achieve an award, they will be invited to graduate at an annual ceremony. Wearing a 'cap and gown', they will receive their certificate in front of an invited audience of parents. Our enthusiastic children have been keen to participate in this initiative. We hope that by the end of the school year we will have many children attending their first graduation ceremony! We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Musical Success! Our School Choir is currently preparing for their next competition and our recently re-introduced piano and guitar lessons have certainly identified some budding musicians. But we always welcome more musical success! Congratulations and well done to Lewis Hair, Malachi Price, Mia Chambers and Darcie Jackson who recently undertook singing exams held at Hill House School and gained Distinctions from the London College of Music. Perfect Pizza If you want to bring design technology to life then why not design your own pizza. Our Year 3 pupils visited Pizza Express and had a fantastic time creating their own pizzas as well as learning about safe food preparation and healthy food choices.

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School News To kick start the Spring term, on Thursday 7th January Orchard hosted Jules, a zoologist, who visited school to talk to the children about fossils and amber. As part of our centre of interest work this half term, he could evidence to the children that dinosaurs were actually once alive on planet Earth! Also, did you know that Sprotbrough, many many years ago, used to be submerged in water? The children were highly engaged and motivated during their time spent with Jules. They enjoyed exploring the many fossils he brought with him and looking at some of the images of what dinosaurs might have looked like. We don't know anything about dinosaur skin as it is not hard enough to become fossilised, this means that they could have been bright pink! Isobel Dunn, who works as part of Active Fusion, came into school on Monday 11th and 18th, to work with the children on multi-skill activities, specifically ball work. She kept them busy and on their toes with intensive warmups, practising skills and fun games at the end of her sessions! We would like to extend our thanks to both Jules and Isobel for providing quality experiences for the children that we're sure they'll remember for years to come. We are looking forward to next half-term's topic which will be centred around transport. The children will be visiting The South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum close to the Lakeside during our first week back to provide stimulus for this exciting area of learning.
