Welcome to the February issue of The Sprotbrough Arrow.

Ok folks, wrap up warm, February is going to be cold! According to the forecast, the first few days of February will see the temperatures drop below freezing. Make sure your car is ready for the cold spell and your boiler is in good working order! We have some photos from last year’s Christmas Light switch on in Sprotbrough. What a lovely event and idea. Its great to see the whole community working together to make something happen. Schools break up on Friday 15th February, if you have plans to escape the chill, luck you! If you are staying at home, Maise Maze have a few things planned to entertain the children. What ever you decide to do, I hope you enjoy some quality family time together. The Sprotbrough Arrow is delivered monthly to every home in Sprotbrough and Warmsworth. If you have a group that needs promoted or an event planned for charity/community involvement, please let me know, we can help promote your group, free of charge. The deadline for the March issue is Wednesday 13th February. The March issue will be distributed the last weekend in February.

Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom Mobile: 07795 387937 email:michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk www.arrowpublications.co.uk

Community News SPROTBROUGH LIGHTS UP FOR CHRISTMAS

The Sprotbrough community turned up in their hundred’s to celebrate the switching on of the Sprotbrough Christmas lights, organised by Sprotbrough Community Christmas Lights group. This year we were grateful to so many people that it would be impossible to name everyone. There must however be a special thanks to Keith Mears who provided the marquee, Liz and Terry Bramall who provided funds, Sprotbrough doctors surgery who decorated their area, Doncaster Went Vally Lions who helped Santa and his sleigh into the village, Richmond Hill Academy ,Orchard school and Copley school who raised funds, Ottos who sold muffins and donated the proceeds, Sprotbrough library who had a donation tin, Sprotbrough Country Club who provided the tea urn to heat the mulled wine, St Mary's church bell ringers, Ridgewood school who provided the band, Copley junior school who provided the children's choir and Heather Mears who provided the theatre players. The list above is only a fraction of the numbers of volunteers who helped make the evening a huge success . Mulled wine, cakes and hot chocolate was provided and served by volunteers and DMBC provided road marshals who volunteered their time along with members of the Parish Council. Our small group of organisers has planning throughout the year to help make the event a success and they deserve our thanks for being behind the event every step of the way. So we begin again to organise the event for this year. We are raising funds to light the tree at the top of Boat Lane to complete the display and any donations will be gratefully received. To everyone who came to help celebrate bringing our village from darkness into light..... Thank you so much for your support. Sprotbrough Community Christmas lights

Doncaster Pathfinder’s Walking Club

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club travelled to the Otley area on Sunday 13th January and enjoyed three walks of varying distances. The more energetic of us walked from Harewood to Otley, a distance of around 11 miles. Setting off from Harewood we were on the lookout for Red Kites and deer on the Harewood estate and had a great view of the house at the start of our walk. Following footpaths over the fields, Emmerdale village could be seen in the distance and after a drink or two at lunchtime at the pub in Bramhope we continued on our way to Otley via the Chevin Forest park. A second group set off for a slightly shorter walk of 9 miles, following the Ebor way into Otley. Our third group enjoyed a 6 mile walk following a similar route. Although this walk was shorter it did not detract from the beauty of the area. If you fancy coming along, February's walk will be on the 10th and we are off to the Peak District in Derbyshire. If you can't make it in February why not join us on 10th March when we plan to go up into North Yorkshire. More information can be found on our website www.doncasterpathfinders.org.uk or search Facebook for Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club. We are not a competitive bunch, our walks are for fun and enjoyment of our beautiful countryside and we welcome new members.

Action for animals Last year, RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch spent over 18,500 hours caring for animals brought to us in need; we found homes for over 870 domestic animals and cared for over 350 wildlife; all of which was made possible by generous donations, whether in the form of time, money or items for our shops. We could not survive as a branch without the continued support from our community, so from the team and the animals at your local RSPCA branch, we would like to say a huge ‘thank you’. Going forward, there are many ways to help us with our mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, donating cash or goods, sponsoring us through our Safe Haven programme and attending our events. We have charity shops at Bawtry, Rotherham, Rossington and Thorne. At the Animal Centre we rehome the animals in our care and have a pet shop on site for all your requirements. We also provide a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk

Richmond Hill Primary School News from February 2019 Absolute Stars! We recently had our first Star Status assembly of the year, in which an astounding 217 pupils received their Bronze award! A huge well done to all who achieved their badge, we might have to find a bigger stage to fit you all on for the next assembly! Y6 Book Launch Y6 have had another exciting book launch, in which they discovered their new novel study book – Trash by Andy Mulligan! Pupils had to crack a series of codes and scour the school for the answers to clues they had been given. After all of their sleuthing, they realised there was buried treasure on the school field, and went out to dig up their hard earned reward. They also found a (tightly sealed) box of sweets, but we are sure that they were more excited about the books.

Help support your local hospice St John’s Hospice in Balby, is a vital community asset, helping Doncaster residents and their families in their time of need. It runs a day hospice as well as an inpatient unit. Do you have a loved one who needs these services? If so, please speak to your GP. Run by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, staff at the hospice continually fundraise with all money pumped into patient care and support and to make patients’ lives more comfortable. Here’s some feedback from loved ones: “Thank you for making my relative feel safe and comfortable at the most awful and frightening time in his life” “We would like to say thank you so much for taking very good care of my relative and also her family and visitors. Nothing was too much trouble at a time when we all needed help and support, it was priceless”. The hospice, which is based off Weston Road at Balby, is currently recruiting for volunteers. Volunteers help in a range of ways including manning the reception, drivers to bring day patients to the hospice, gardening and much more. Fancy volunteering? If so, call Lindsey Richards, who manages the volunteers, on 01302 796662. Lindsey is also the hospice’s fundraiser. Money has been raised is so many unusual ways over the years, from parachute jumping and school reunions to selling a CD. Money is also regularly raised via raffles, coffee mornings and other donations.

Want to help fundraise for the hospice? If so, call Lindsey on 01302 796662.

School News from Copley Junior School

Year 3 Gods and Goddesses Children in Year 3 launched their new project on ‘Gods and Mortals’ by dressing up as Ancient Greeks. Well done to all the children for your creative costumes.

Year 4 Training for the Roman Army To launch their new creative learning project on ‘I am Warrior’, museum staff from Murton Park visited school. Children enjoyed an exciting day full of activities including a themed presentation and interactive talk, illustrated with a wide range of authentic artefacts. This was followed with craft and artefact handling activities and an active session practising preparations for a Roman battle. By the end of the day, all children successfully passed their Diploma and are all now fierce members of the Roman Army!

Homework Superstars We are delighted with the creative home learning projects completed by the children. For each project, children are given a choice of activities so that they can present research in their own way and can develop independent learning skills. Below are just a few examples from our recent projects on ‘Predators’, ‘Road Trip USA’, ‘Pharaohs’ and ‘A Child’s War’. Young Voices Concert Once again, our enthusiastic Year 5 and 6 choir of over 60 children took part in the Young Voices Concert at Sheffield Arena. After months of practising the songs and dances with Mrs Havercroft, the children were very excited to attend the afternoon rehearsal, followed by the concert itself. The whole performance with the dancers and vocalists was amazing, not to mention of course the incredible 5500 children in the Young Voices choir. We greatly appreciate that so many parents/carers and relatives were able to come in the evening to enjoy the performance. Well done to all the children for putting in so much effort to learn the songs and dance moves. As usual, the children were an absolute credit to the school with their enthusiasm and excellent behaviour. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best Wishes, E.A. DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. In a change to the published programme, the Club met of Monday 7 January, when Richard Bell gave a presentation about “The Sand House”, a feature in Doncaster from the 1850’s until the Second World War. It was a mansion sized dwelling carved from sandstone and featured a network of tunnels decorated with carvings. It stood north east of Balby Bridge, the site now being occupied by a block of flats. On Monday 21 January the Club held its Annual General Meeting report in next month’s edition. On 7 January the Club will be holding its Annual General Meeting and then on Monday 21 January Richard Bell’s presentation will be “The Sand House”, a talk about a historic house near the centre of Doncaster which is now demolished and buried. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Des Parks (01302 856188), George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information.
