elcome to the January issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow. After the buzz of December, January peeks around the corner and the thought of a new year dawns. New healthy eating plans, exercise regimes and resolutions fly around our heads making us feel ready and motivated for 2017. What ever your aim, whether it be fitness, new career or just a change of routine, I hope you manage to achieve your goal… but don’t be too hard on yourself, there's always 2018! I hope everyone had their most perfect Christmas whatever that may be. If you are stuck for choice on how you are going to celebrate the start of a new year, all of our local pubs have something lined up to keep you entertained. A great choice if you feel like an evening out but don’t want to travel far and rely on taxis. Whatever you choose to do, I hope you have a great time with your family and friends and that 2017 is a year filled with good health and happiness. The deadline for the February issue will be Wednesday 18th January. The Arrow will be delivered the last full weekend in January.

Community News The Christmas tree lighting event took place on Saturday November 26th. The event was enjoyed by around 300 people who came along to support the second year of the event. Ottos lighted the trees on the edge of the green, and the still developing Sprotbrough Tea Rooms situated in the old post office , joined in by lighting the large tree on the perimeter of their site. St Mary's church and Scott practice joined in with lights of their own and the growing Christmas tree was decorated with hundreds of ice white and blue lights. The whole event was supported by funds from the recent tour de Yorkshire and a generous donation from Dorothy Weaver. Beavers and Rainbows entered a competition to draw a poster advertising the event and everyone taking part received a small gift. Copley school choir led the community singing of three festive songs and everyone was offered mince pies or cakes. There were so many people to thank but space limits naming them all. Suffice it to say that it is becoming a real community event. Planning for next year has already begun. If you would like to, donate, sponsor, help or support this event, please contact me below. Everyone is welcome. Contact carolmaryrees@hotmail.co.uk.

Richmond Hill Primary Academy KS1 Christmas Performance It’s that special time of year! Our Y1 and Y2 Christmas Performance was ‘A Magical Journey’, which received an abundance of fantastic comments and praise from the audience.

Christmas Fayre

We always look forward to our Christmas Fayre with lots of games to play like the classic Wheel of Fortune!

Nursery Christmas

Our Nursery children welcomed parents into Nursery for a little gathering to enjoy hot chocolate and festive biscuits and to listen to them singing some Christmas songs. Next step the stage to join the Reception children in the Foundation Christmas Performance in front of a bigger audience.

Thank you Sainsbury’s!

A great big massive thank you to our Sainsbury’s Local for donating a scrumptious food hamper for our Christmas raffle.

Sprotbrough Orchard News What a busy month December has been here at Orchard! Our children have been super excited about all the activities we’ve had planned and they’ve been involved with. On Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd December, children in school visited St. Mary’s church to listen to the first nativity story told by Reverend Amanda in the chapel. They were actively involved in the story using puppets to symbolise the main characters. Afterwards, they were given opportunity to view the nativity display before heading back to school. School would like to extend their thanks to Rev. Amanda for her continued support and links with us. On Monday 5th December, the Children’s Society came to make Christingles with the children. They talked with them about the Christingle symbol and what it represents. That afternoon we invited the Children’s Society back into school to participate in our Christingle assembly where the children presented their donations. On Tuesday 6th December we held our Nursery concert where the youngest children in school sang a selection of their favourite Christmas songs. On Wednesday 7th December the two Reception classes performed their take on the first nativity and it was greatly received by our fabulous audience. The Key Stage One concert will be held on Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th December. On Thursday 8th December, Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School turned the big 5-0! To celebrate fifty years of the school being open, Mrs Rimmer cooked a birthday lunch and children participated in traditional party games in the afternoon. We also held our termly school disco which was well attended as usual and raised £378 for school funds. We would like to extend our thanks to the parents who help to make these events happen and the support from all parents who brought their children along. With a week still left at school, there’s still so much more happening before the long awaited break. Keep your eyes peeled in next month’s issue for the activities we have yet to tell you about.

This very pretty girl is Amber, an 18 month old Plummer Terrier cross Whippet. Amber is an adorable girl – very friendly and affectionate, and loves to play. She is wellbehaved in the house and has lived with children. She is ok with other dogs when out on walks, but needs to be the only pet in the home. Amber is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. If you are interested in meeting this lovely girl, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705

School News from Copley Junior School Christmas was celebrated at Copley Junior in a number of ways including Year 5’s Space themed presentation, Year 6’s performance of ‘Snow White and the Seventeen Dwarfs’, a very busy Christmas Fair, carols to celebrate the Christmas tree lights switching on in Sprotbrough, Christmas Jumper Day in support of ‘Save the Children’, Christmas parties, Christmas lunch, Christmas disco and a traditional carols and readings service at St Mary’s Church. The photographs below show just a few of the characters from our Christmas performances. The Year 5 children impressed everyone with their fantastic knowledge about Space with their performance of ‘Into the Great Unnknown’. The Year 6 performance of ‘Snow White and the Seventeen Dwarfs’ had something for everyone – fantastic acting, super singing, dramatic dance, humour, slapstick comedy, high tension, true love, tragedy and the triumph of good over evil! Express Events Over the last few weeks we have welcomed parents/carers and relatives into school to share in the children’s learning. As part of their project on ‘Predators’ Year 3 designed and made some wonderful models. These were displayed to create our gallery together with writing and Science work. As part of their work children also created life size paintings of an elephant and a bear! In Year 4 children demonstrated their knowledge about ‘Raiders and Traders’ with group presentations of their work, which included extended writing, models, sewing, paintings, fact files, PowerPoint presentations and posters. They even demonstrated their skills as powerful Viking guards! The Year 6 express was entirely pupil led, with the different groups deciding how they would present their learning about what life was like in World War 2. There was a great variety of work presented from models, posters, PowerPoints, poetry, factual writing, painting, quizzes etc. It was lovely to see the children sharing their work with such enthusiasm and confidence.

Young Shakespeare Visit for Year 5 and 6 Our children in Year 5 and 6 have had the fantastic experience of engaging in ‘theatre in the round’ with the Young Shakespeare Company. We organise this for Years 5-6 every year so that by the time children leave Copley they have had live theatre experience of two Shakespeare plays. The Young Shakespeare Company visits provide a wonderful first experience of Shakespeare. Their performance of ‘Macbeth’ was, quite simply, electrifying, and the children were completely absorbed. At points children were actively involved in the performance and afterwards there was opportunity to ask the very talented actors questions about the plot and the motivation of the characters. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher
