Welcome to the January issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow. You may well be suffering from the annual feast known as Christmas. The only time of the year where food contains no calories! If that’s you, don’t worry, there are plenty of sales to visit to keep you busy and burn off those extra pounds ;) Unfortunately, due to the early deadline for this issue, we have not been able to bring you news and photos of the Christmas celebrations, however, we will share these with you in the February issue. If you have any photographs you would like to share, please send them to me at my e-mail address below. Thank you to all the Arrow readers, advertisers and contributors, I wish you all a wonderful New Year filled with family, friends and good health. Cheers! The deadline for the February issue is Wednesday 20th January. The February Arrow will be delivered the last weekend in January.

Community News Warmsworth W.I. Can you believe this is our 3rd year? And once again we have had a very full and enjoyable calendar along with some fantastic days out. Our Christmas Lunch was thoroughly enjoyed by all at the Stables Restaurant, in May we visited Renishaw Hall and in June we held another successful Beetle Drive. Our Faith Supper was also a great success as well as the visit in July to the vineyard in Holmfirth where we sampled their wines. Jean Thompson visited Buckingham Palace as our WI representative to celebrate 100 years of the WI and we also hosted the Harvest Supper. This year our quiz team won the South Yorkshire federation quiz competition so congratulations to them. Our treasure hunt and annual stall at the gala were also both a great success with interesting speakers being invited to our group session meetings at regular intervals though out the year. This year there has also been a lot of media coverage about the WI through the TV programmes Home Fires and the Great British Menu. Hopefully this will spur greater interest in the WI in the future. If you are interested in joining us or know of anyone who might, we hold our local meetings on the first Thursday of each month from 7pm at the Community Centre, Low Road West in Warmsworth. Finally we must take this opportunity to thank the management and staff at the Holiday Inn, Warmsworth for providing judging at our cake stall at the annual Apple Day event. We would also like to thank them for the generous donation of the raffle prize. Further information can be obtained from Janice on 01302 854167.

Perfect Project Work
Our creative children have produced high quality project work over the last few weeks. Year 5 have been researching information about Space, designing rockets and moon buggies and making their own orreries (models of the solar system). Year 4’s project has been ‘Road Trip USA’. The children have made wonderful Native American dream catchers, totem poles and have developed their baking skills, with traditional American recipes. Year 3’s project on Predators has resulted in some amazing art work and models. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School News As usual, December has been a very busy month at Orchard! And we still have lots more to pack in before the end of term. Our Nursery children kick off the concert season with their performances on Tuesday 8th of December. Reception are performing in their own miniconcert this year on Thursday 10th December and the Key Stage 1 concert performances are scheduled for Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th December. We hope to include lots of the photographs from these magical productions in the next issue of Sprotbrough Arrow, keep your eyes peeled! Marilyn, our school cleaner was nominated for a LASER (Local Authority Service Excellence Recognition) award and attended the function at Mansion House in November. She was up for 'Cleaner of the Year' award and we are pleased that her work has been recognised and celebrated by clinching the accolade! Marilyn received a certificate in recognition of her nomination and a bottle of champagne as the winner of her category. Staff at Orchard would like to extend their appreciation and thanks to an integral member of our team. Well done Marilyn, we couldn't think of a more deserving person! On Friday 4th December Year Two visited St. Mary's Church in the village for Rev. Amanda to retell the first Christmas story. Year One and Reception will be visiting in the next few days. Our children were highly engaged during this experience and relished the opportunity to use puppets and singing to broaden their understanding. The staff at Orchard would like to take this opportunity to thank Rev. Amanda for the hard work and time she has dedicated to our children.

Victorian School Days Our Year 6 pupils recently experienced what it would be like as a pupil in a Victorian school. The 3Rs, Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic were regimentally delivered by the stern teachers. It certainly was a contrast to today’s school life. Pupils decided overwhelmingly that they much preferred the 2015 version of school! Sleeping Beauty and Magna In the lead up to Christmas, many of our pupils have enjoyed visits out of school. Some pupils have been to the Cast Theatre in town to see the fantastic production of Sleeping Beauty - well worth the visit according to those who watched it. Some of our children were chosen to join the merriment on stage, which made it even more memorable for them. Other pupils have visited Magna, the science adventure centre and got creative with electrical circuits and experienced an array of experiments.
