Welcome to the January issue of The Sprotbrough Arrow.

I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and managed to spend some quality time with those they love. Congratulations to everyone who has been a part of organising Christmas in Sprotbrough and Warmsworth throughout November and December. Whether you have organised an event, helped out on the day or donated raffle prizes, every bit of help is appreciated at what is the busiest time of the year for us all. Having worked on the Sprotbrough Arrow for the last 12 years, I have been in a very good position to meet so many local people who go out of their way for others. The volunteering so many of you do to keep our villages the friendly, community spirited places they are is appreciated by so many. From organising huge events like the Scout Gala and Road Race to carols around the tree at Christmas, you all make a difference to the people who live in this lovely community. I would like to say thank you to all of the people who deliver the Sprotbrough Arrow every month. Although it is a very good way to keep fit, the winter months can be tough and a bit of extra motivation needed! Also, to Gary Johnson, who is worth his weight in gold with the support he gives me with deliveries. Lastly, a special thank you to all the advertisers as well as the people who supply the Arrow every month with information on what is going on in the villages Schools, Churches, Community Halls and general events. The deadline for the February issue is Wednesday 16th January. The February issue will be distributed the last weekend in January.

I would like to wish you all a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year Michelle Sidebottom Mobile: 07795 387937 email:michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk www.arrowpublications.co.uk

Doncaster Rambler’s Mince Pie Walk Tuesday 4th December The combination of a clear, frosty morning and the promise of Hilda's mince pies tempted 53 ramblers to meet up on the green in Finningley for this figure-of-8, 8 mile winter stroll. After welcoming a few new guests and outlining the details of the walk, Hilda led us off in a north westerly direction through copses and open fields up towards Blaxton Common. On route at the front we could hear Hilda mutter “I hope there are enough pies!” The open field footpaths were dry and solid underfoot, making the going easy for a change. Moving through forests now bear of leaves, felt eerie as you could see far into the wood. At High Common wood we made a couple of left turns, to loop back south on the Thorne Road before detouring right to the outskirts of Blaxton before returning south into Finningley and the pavilion in the local park where friends and family were waiting for our arrival with tea, coffee, sherry and trays of mince pies - what a welcome treat. The Harvey Arms tempted some away, many of us were happy to stay in the pavilion and chat over the refreshments and our pack-ups. The name Finningley comes from Old English and basically means “Clearing of the fen dwellers” but in modern times famous for its 2700m runway and during the Cold War home to the RAF Vulcan Bomber fleet. The first commercial flight took place in April 2005 from the then Robin Hood Airport which has since been renamed Doncaster Sheffield Airport. The afternoon took us south towards Bawtry Golf Club, along the edge of Crow Wood then across the A614, before passing the club house then 200 yards further on taking a sharp right across a very muddy field sinking ankle deep. Thankfully the tarmac surface alongside the airport runway provided ample opportunity to shake off at least some of the clay. On cue an enormous cargo plane came into land. Exciting stuff for the child in us all, as was the walk, the pies and all. Our sincere thanks go to Hilda, her family and Bet for looking after us at lunchtime and for providing such a generous reception. Thanks also to Rob for back marking. A perfect December day out for everyone. Dave Binnington and Peter Rowsell For more information about the Doncaster Ramblers and future activity please visit our Home Page

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club

walk the 1st or 2nd Sunday in every month and we welcome new members. We are not a competitive bunch and our walks are for fun and enjoyment of our beautiful countryside. All our walks are led by experienced leaders and we offer two each month, one of around 8 miles or a slightly longer one of 11 to 13 miles. We set off from Waterdale in Doncaster by private coach and travel to the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District or other equally lovely places. On 9th December we enjoyed a moderate walk in North Nottinghamshire and as is our Christmas tradition our walk was followed by a carvery at The Boat Inn at Hayton. If you fancy joining us, our January walk takes place on the 13th and we will be walking from Harewood to Otley. If you can't make it in January why not join us on 10th February when we are off to The Peak District. It`s a great way to meet like-minded people, enjoy our countryside and get a little bit fitter at the same time!

For more information, you can find us at www.doncasterpathfinders.org.uk/ or search Facebook for Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club.

Volunteers help rescued animals Volunteers are crucial to the operation of the RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch, helping in the shops, caring for animals rescued from cruelty, driving RSPCA vehicles, tending to the grounds or fundraising. Catherine is a regular volunteer who has helped at the Animal Centre on the Great North Road, near Bawtry, for six years. It was her love of animals that encouraged her to volunteer for the RSPCA. “I always love to hear about our animals finding happiness in their new forever homes,” says Catherine. “As a volunteer, the training and support at the Centre is so good. I am now confident in a variety of grooming ad cleaning routines.” Although Catherine primarily works with the rabbits, she has a great love of dogs and owns two of her own – Carly and Roxy. Catherine has experience of working with the Centre’s cats, dogs and rabbits. Being flexible certainly helps when you work with animals! If you would like to know more about the rewarding role of RSPCA volunteer and the varied opportunities at your local branch, call in at the Animal Centre (open six days 11am-4pm, closed Wednesdays), telephone 01302 719790 or email info@rspcadrb.org.uk.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB

Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. On Monday 19 November Richard Wimpenny was our guest speaker whose presentation was entitled “Why Hitler?”. Richard covered Hitler’s life and the events he was involved in or which triggered from his early life in Vienna before WWI until 1939. He told us about how Hitler aspired to be an artist in his youth when he did not have to work for his living, having inherited monies from his mother and father, both of whom died when he was young. The young Hitler served as a runner in WW1 and then began his political career in the chaos of Germany in the 1920’s, first trying for political power through violence, and later cunningly using the democratic system to obtain absolute power. Throughout this time he rode his luck, with eventual devastating consequences for Europe. The beginning of December (3rd) brought us a visit to “The Silver Screen” in the company of William Gildersleve. This was a short history of cinema in the 1950’s when significant changes took place. There was the advent of television, especially in the USA , which resulted in audiences beginning to fall. The film industry fought back with innovations such as wide screen, colour, improved sound, spectacular films, and covering subjects which TV did not dare to touch. This was a nostalgic return to our childhood and youth. Then, on December 17 members held their Annual Christmas Lunch at the Golf Club. On 7 January the Club will be holding its Annual General Meeting and then on Monday 21 January Richard Bell’s presentation will be “The Sand House”, a talk about a historic house near the centre of Doncaster which is now demolished and buried. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Des Parks (01302 856188), George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information.

Help support your local hospice St John’s Hospice in Balby, is a vital community asset, helping Doncaster residents and their families in their time of need. It runs a day hospice as well as an inpatient unit. Do you have a loved one who needs these services? If so, please speak to your GP. Run by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, staff at the hospice continually fundraise with all money pumped into patient care and support and to make patients’ lives more comfortable. Here’s some feedback from loved ones: “Thank you for making my relative feel safe and comfortable at the most awful and frightening time in his life” “We would like to say thank you so much for taking very good care of my relative and also her family and visitors. Nothing was too much trouble at a time when we all needed help and support, it was priceless”. The hospice, which is based off Weston Road at Balby, is currently recruiting for volunteers. Volunteers help in a range of ways including manning the reception, drivers to bring day patients to the hospice, gardening and much more. Fancy volunteering? If so, call Lindsey Richards, who manages the volunteers, on 01302 796662. Lindsey is also the hospice’s fundraiser. Money has been raised is so many unusual ways over the years, from parachute jumping and school reunions to selling a CD. Money is also regularly raised via raffles, coffee mornings and other donations.

School News from Copley Junior School January 2019 Happy New Year from everyone at Copley Junior School! Christmas was celebrated at Copley Junior in a number of ways including Year 5’s nativity; Year 6’s performance of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’; a very busy Christmas Fair; carols to celebrate the Christmas tree lights switching on in Sprotbrough; a choir performance at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Christmas Jumper Day in support of ‘Save the Children’; a ‘Christmas Experience’ for Year 3 at St Mary’s Church; Christmas craft activities for Year 4 at the Methodist Church; Christmas parties; Christmas lunch; Christmas disco and a traditional carols and readings service at St Mary’s Church. Our Year 5 pupils impressed everyone with their wonderful singing as they presented a lively nativity themed performance, ‘The Inn Crowd’. The nativity story was brought to life as seen through the eyes of the animals, who discovered that there was no better place to be than in the stable on the wondrous evening that Jesus was born.

19

The Year 6 performance of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ had something for everyone – fantastic acting, super singing, energetic dance, humour, slapstick comedy, high tension, true love and the triumph of good over evil and, of course, a happy ending.

Year 4 ‘Godly Play’ at the Methodist Church We have a valued link with Sprotbrough Methodist Church. Year 4’s ‘Godly Play’ sessions provide opportunity for children to explore and reflect upon Bible stories and they thoroughly enjoy taking part in the different craft activities too.

Year 3 ‘Christmas Experience’ at St Mary’s Church We are very grateful to members of St Mary's Church for organising a wonderful afternoon workshop session for both Year 3 classes to help them learn more about the Christmas story. Children moved around the different 'stations' meeting the angel Gabriel, finding out more about the journey to Bethlehem, meeting one of the shepherds and a wise man. They took part in activities at each station including craft and dressing up. The children learned many new things about the Christmas story. Thank you to Reverend Amanda and everyone at St Mary's Church for providing such an enjoyable afternoon of learning! Children in Need Well done to our School Council who organised a non-uniform day of stripy and spotty clothes and playtime animation movie sessions to raise funds for this fantastic charity. We raised an amazing £226 so thank you to parents and staff for your generous support! We look forward to sharing more school news soon. Best wishes,E.A. Crayton, Head teacher

Richmond Hill Primary School News from Nov/Dec 2018 Happy New Year from Richmond Hill! We hope you all have had a wonderful Christmas and can’t wait to see everyone back in January. Open Classrooms & Maths Mastery! We hosted our very first 'Open Classroom' event in November, aiming to teach parents/carers about different mindsets and our Maths Mastery learning. The event took place over two separate mornings and invited parents/carers into school to work with staff and children. Parents were informed about the different mindsets (fixed & growth) that we display as learners and how these can affect the way that we learn. Parents also had the opportunity to see Mathematics Mastery actually looks like in the classroom and how daily Maths Meetings enhance previous learning. All parents/carers who attended this event were invited into the classrooms to work with their child within the Maths meeting and Maths lesson. The event was very well attended and gave a great insight into daily classroom practise as well as the theory and research conducted around the Mathematics Mastery approach. Two very positive mornings were enjoyed by all, look out for the next open classroom event which will take place in the Spring term and be centred around strategies for 'Reading'. Hola and Merci, Hill House! Our friends at Hill House School put on another wonderful learning experience for pupils from The Rose Learning Trust this half term. Year 3 pupils from each Trust school attended a special Languages day and spent time learning French and Spanish numbers, French Christmas words, Spanish colour names, and singing songs in both languages. What fun we all had! Thank you once again to Hill House for your continued support.

Y3 & Y4 Football Competition Our Y3 Boys’, Y4 Boys’ and Y3/ Y4 Mixed Girls’ Football teams recently took part in a competition, which saw 56 Boys’ and 20 Girls’ teams compete at the Keepmoat Stadium. In true Richmond Hill style, the teams demonstrated brilliant attacking, defending and goalkeeping skills, playing a total 15 matches. The Y4 Boys’ team put in a magnificent effort and managed to get through to and eventually win the semi-finals, leading them to a final that was described as ‘almost too exciting to watch’! After a tough draw in the final against Rosedale Academy, the team went through to penalties and then a gruelling sudden death. Well done to the Y4 Boys’ who earned a well-fought 2nd place and made it through to the county finals! Well done to our teams for their amazing hard work and effort! Y5 Hockey Competition Our Hockey teams were invited to Doncaster Hockey Club to take part in a tournament against other Doncaster teams, with over 40 teams taking part. Our teams were split in to 3 groups, each playing against other Doncaster schools and were noted for good use of the stick, as well as their attacking and defencing skills, in a tough tournament. Of our three teams, we managed two 4th place and one 2nd place finishes in their respective groups! The Boy’s team nearly made it through to the finals after winning all of their games bar one, which was a draw. Another team did the same and the organisers decided to go to goal average, which meant we were awarded 2nd place. A fabulous, fun packed day was had by all. Well done teams, you all made your school proud!
