Welcome

to the July issue of the

Sprotbrough Arrow What an amazing June we had, so many lovely events held all over the country to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It was great to see all the bunting decorating our streets, homes and shops. A huge well done to the Parish Council and everyone else involved in the Jubilee celebrations at Cusworth Hall. Hopefully, you will now have a copy of the registration form for the Scarecrow festival this August/September. Good luck to everyone who takes part in this brilliant community event. Congratulations to all students who have now finished their Sats, GCSE’s, A’ Levels and BTEC qualifications, I wish you all the best of luck with your results and a relaxing summer. The August issue deadline is earlier than usual this month due to the holiday period, please send your adverts and articles no later than Wednesday 13th July. The arrow will be delivered before 1st August. Best wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk arrowpublications.co.uk

Here at the RSPCA Doncaster and Rotherham Branch, we care for over 1000 animals per year ranging from dogs, cats, puppies and kittens to birds, wildlife and rabbits. We aim to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome every animal that we care for. That being said, some animals are in our care longer than others. Below you will find our current long stays residents, all of whom are ready and waiting for

their forever families. Mable and Maple are our current longest stay residents. They are a pair of young sister rabbits who have been in our care for over 7 months, after being found stray at a young age. They have spent the vast majority of their life with us and sadly have never experienced a loving family home. Like most other rabbits, they love their fresh vegetables and will make a great addition to any home. As they are bonded to one another they will need to find a home that is happy to accept both of them. Our longest stay feline residents are Elijah and Erica, this bonded pair started their cattery journey being quite timid, but since settling in and making friends with staff, they are now a super affectionate pair and love having fusses. Since they have been in our care, they are starting to show more of their true selves. They are looking for the perfect home where they can grow their personalities even more.

6

Elijah and Erica would be best suited to a family with no other pets and children over the age of 12. Stella is our longest stay canine. She's only 11 months old and has been with us for almost 4 months now. Stella's a sweet girl and could live with children over 12 years old. She would need to be the only dog in the household for now. Due to a leg injury early on in life, Stella requires physiotherapy treatment and would need a family who understands she may need additional care in the future. Whether you are on the lookout for a dynamic duo or a sole companion, we have a wide variety of animals currently available for adoption – from dogs and cats to rabbits and guinea pigs. When one of our animals becomes available for adoption, they are posted on our website (https:// www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk/animals-foradoption) and Facebook page. If you are interested in adopting an animal, please follow the process that is explained on our website. There are many ways to help RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch with our mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, donating cash or goods, leaving a legacy, and sponsoring through our Safe Haven programme and attending events. We have charity shops at Bawtry, Rossington and Thorne, as well as eBay and Depop. At the Animal Centre, we rehabilitate and rehome the animals in our care and have a pet supplies store on site for all your requirements.

On the 20th May, some of our Year 2 children took part in a sporting event at the Institute of Sport in Sheffield. We were so proud of their enthusiasm and willingness to try new sporting events such as Taekwondo and cricket and their teamwork was inspirational! Go team Orchard! Just before breaking up for the half term holiday, we loved celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee here at Orchard. Children impressed us with their art skills producing paintings and ink pen drawings of our long serving Monarch as well as fabulous colour mixes and work inspired by the Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt! We even had time to try out our baking skills to produce some fabulous regal buns! Every year group played celebratory games and we enjoyed having a whole school picnic lunch. To end the day, all children took part in an amazing ‘crown’ parade! Well done to all the children on their fantastic efforts making their superb crowns to bring into school. As part of the extended celebrations in the local community, a small group of children were able to join members of the Sprotbrough Methodist Church to sing the Gary Barlow and Commonwealth Band song ‘Sing’. We would like to thank Mr Beckingham for giving up his time to come into school to help teach the song. The children impressed us with their singing skills and I think it made Mr Beckingham’s day that one of our Reception children thought it was the REAL Gary Barlow that had visited school! On 22nd June we are looking forward to sharing more of our singing talents at The Dome in Doncaster when some of our Year 2 children will be taking part in this year’s ‘Sing Out’ event so look out for details about this in next month’s issue!

RICHMOND HILL PRIMARY ACADEMY

Platinum Jubilee Celebrations at Richmond Hill We had some Royal visitors to our party in the park event which saw each year group from Nursery to Year 6 perform a song from each decade of the Queen’s reign. The audience were amazing and enjoyed refreshments of a jubilee bun made by the school cook and a ‘jubbly’ ice pop. Afterwards one of our Royal visitors gave a big hooray when they saw our special jubilee planters, where we’ve sown the Queen’s cornflowers, ready to bloom for the children to enjoy. Richmond Hill puts its stamp on the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations - with our fabulous art creation for the Sprotbrough time capsule project - all of our children have contributed. The wonderful Mrs Vickers has co-ordinated the project to create this masterpiece. As part of our Platinum Jubilee celebrations at Richmond Hill we held the ‘Royal Variety Performance’ which was phenomenal! From nursery to Y6 there were great performances, such talent on display and a fabulous audience that appreciated every act. It was lovely to welcome back some of our retired staff as VIPs. Our finale was our Y2 trombonists playing the national anthem accompanied by a very respectful Y2L. Wonderful!

Our nursery were so inspired by our Queen they have been developing their fine motor skills using pencil and colours to create some wonderful portraits. Dressed to Impress Our Year 3 pupils recently visited Murton Park near York to experience life as a Roman Centurion and had an absolutely fantastic time.

Spectacular St. Mary’s Our Year 6 had a lovely walk to St Mary’s church to carry out some art sketching in the area. They were also fortunate to drop in to listen to the organ being played and found out some interesting information about learning to play the instrument.

SPROTBROUGH VILLAGE HISTORY GROUP JUBILEE PARTY – 27 May 2022 What a celebration we had yesterday. Because we meet on the last Friday of each month, we took advantage to have an early party to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II 70th year on the throne and I think we did her proud. I think we had 37 people turn up. Having only catered for 25 and had registered 34 on the morning of the event, I was a little concerned that the buffet might not go round. I needn’t have been. The caterer, Sue Batty of Catering Occasions of Adwick really came up trumps with a fantastic display of many different kinds of food and desserts so that there was more than enough to go round and to enable food to be taken home at the end by participants (with trays and covers included in the service). Sue’s number is 07486 656936 if anyone is looking for a caterer and I can thoroughly recommend her for any occasion. We were a little worried about getting set up on time, but a few people arrived early and set about setting the tables and putting on table cloths, putting up bunting and balloons and generally giving the hall a party atmosphere. Memorabilia of the Coronation had also been brought along by members to share with each other. We started the meeting with just a few introductions of new people and visitors: Gordon Smith, who now lives in Egypt for most of the year, but has written extensively about Cusworth Hall, where he lived in the gatehouse and was custodian for some years, was welcomed and explained how he came to live in Alexandria. Two daughters of Derek Barnard, (star of Oswin Avenue Schools’ presentation on YouTube!) brought him along on his decorated mobility scooter. Both now live away, one in Truro and one Italy, but were here on a visit, whilst Tracy, the daughter who usually brings him, was away. It was also lovely to see Richard Watson, who had brought his mum and dad, Jean and Geoff, and was able to stay for a short time. Lastly, Eunice Atkin, in her fabulous Union Jack dress, very enthusiastically regaled us with a description of her visit to London with a friend when they checked out all the jubilee decorations there, as well as a very expensive afternoon tea and visits to other places of interest, which produced much laughter and enjoyment. A little later, we were also pleased to welcome Cllr Allan Jones, retiring Civic Mayor, and today dressed for the occasion, who had arranged out tour of the Mansion House in April, and his wife, Liz. Before we settled down to eat, we each had a class of Prosecco to toast the Queen with a few hurrahs, which further set the tone for the fabulous food and lots of gossip round the table. The final act was to distribute small tins of M&S Jubilee Biscuits to each family, which were accepted with surprise and thanks. And so to clearing up, when again everyone mucked in and we were soon cleared away leaving the hall as we had found it. It has been lovely to receive many texts and emails of thanks from members for arranging the event, which is appreciated, but we couldn’t have done it as well without your help, as well as a Cynthia’s Council grant, so a big thank you all round. Just one request: Someone brought a book “Great Events of the Royal Year 1953’ was left behind, so if anyone knows who it was, please get in touch so that it can be returned. Finally, if I can use this space to advertise the oral history book we produced, “Sprotbrough: from Rural Estate to Real Estate, 1925-1964”, more copies are now available, price £13, from me. Please message on Facebook, or email me to order. Thanks.

Doncaster Rambler’s Conisbrough Parks Exploration Seven of us, including new member Tracey and her friend Jane, met at the church at Old Edlington. We walked towards the shops in Edlington, pausing to read the story of the white greyhound, before turning left immediately after the Asda store, and walking towards the old brickyards - the scene in 2009 where two bothers attacked two younger boys, who survived the onslaught but needed hospital treatment. The Brick Pond as it is known today was the last of three clay pits; the other two opened in the early 1900’s with the bricks produced being used for the construction of Yorkshire Main Colliery and local housing. These two clay pits were worked out in the early 1950’s. Along with Yorkshire Main Colliery, now closed, the Brick Yard provided much needed employment for local people. On the site of the current Brick Pond, the clay was dug out and used to make clay bricks. The site was closed for a brief period of four to five years and re-opened by the Hepworth Iron Co. to make land drainage pipes. Production ceased in 1970 and the site was then left derelict for several years. Some time during the 1980’s, the site was landscaped to include pathways around the pond which had become considerably larger and of course deeper over the years. Boardwalks were installed at either side of the pond and steps created out of railways sleepers on the embankments to allow easy access from a nearby housing estate. Trees and shrubs were planted by local school-children. Leaving the area we walked towards Conisbrough, passing Stringers nursery, before turning left and following the course of an old railway line. Turning left onto the busy road at the end for 50 yards we then turned left onto a minor road, then left again onto a footpath which took us to the semi-derelict Conisbrough Parks Farm, where we began the gentle climb initially but steep climb for the final section towards Beacon Hill. Here, we rested, dmired the views and refreshed ourselves. Walking through the village of Clifton we joined a track which took us back to Old Edlington. Also follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/ for details of past Rambler outings. Remember while out observe the Countryside Code and give way to other walkers.
