Community News A True Legend! The sad news of Tony Storey will have touched many people in Doncaster. With a headship at Hayfield School which spanned more than a generation, Mr Storey was the longest serving Headteacher in our country and retired in 2007. Mr Storey was a well loved and inspirational role model for many young people who passed through the doors of Hayfield school, whose reputation was of being one of the best schools in Doncaster. Hayfield School held a memorial on Monday 22nd June giving the community a chance to say goodbye together and remember this very special person. In 2006 The Arrow’s Junior reporter, Lucy Warnock interviewed Mr Storey and this was the only time I had the pleasure of meeting him. Lucy asked Mr Storey ‘What’s your favourite part of working at a school?’ Mr Storey replied ‘The best part is working with people– whether it’s colleagues, pupils, kitchen staff, librarians, it keeps me young! You learn from people with different backgrounds which is very interesting. We employ about 135 staff in total, and there are the pupils as well, so it is a big organisation. So the best part will always be working with people.’ Tony Storeys enthusiasm for people was one of his many strengths but the one he is most likely to be remembered for. Caroline Flint MP said “Tony Storey served for nearly four decades as a headteacher and generations of young people flourished at Hayfield School during that time. He was passionate about education; passionate about our airport and passionate about Doncaster being a great place to live and work. Tony was a straight-talking, larger than life character and a great ambassador for our town. When they made Tony, they broke the mould. I’m not sure we will ever see his like again.
The Children’s Society A SUMMER CELEBRATION LUNCH in St Mary’s Church Hall on Friday 3 July from 12 noon to 2pm As you arrive there will be a glass of Buck’s Fizz to sharpen your appetite There will be a raffle for you to chance your luck There will be a meal and dessert to satisfy your taste buds There will be good company to keep your conversational skills
And all this for £6 only
Tickets will be available in St Mary’s Church or from Victor Hext (854467) All profits will go to the Children’s Society to help it work towards a country where all children are free from disadvantage. You will help, for example, teenager Meg who writes A typical day doesn’t exist. It’s just a good day or a bad day. I care for my mum, my sister 11, and my brother 8, who has learning difficulties. Mum’s mental health issues kicked in when I was about eight – Mum started crying and didn’t want to be a mum any more. The stigma is pretty awful. People don’t understand it but can I blame them? I didn’t know anything about it before Mum got ill. The Children’s Society listened to me and helped me. I like cats because they don’t demand anything – just a bit of love and food. Book your place now Enjoy yourself And help Meg and others who are disadvantaged
My thoughts are with his partner Jan and his family, and I hope they are comforted by the warm tributes from those who knew him well.” A sentiment shared by us all.

School News from
Copley Junior School Young Heart Hero Award We are very proud to share that one of pupils has been named as the national ‘Young Heart Hero’ of 2015 by the British Heart Foundation. Jemma organised a fund raising day at Copley Junior for the British Heart Foundation in memory of her father and raised over £700. Jemma and her family attended an awards ceremony in Manchester when her special award was presented to her. Well done Jemma – what a fantastic achievement! Year 6 Residential Visit to Northumberland Taking part in a residential visit is an important part of children’s educational experience in Years 5 and 6 at Copley Junior. Children have opportunity to develop independence and to develop skills of team work and cooperation as they take part in a varied and active programme of visits and activities. Our Year 6 residential visit included a visit to Hadrian’s Wall, Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum, a drive over the causeway to the island of Lindisfarne, a visit to the Grace Darling Museum and Bamburgh Church, a walk to Dunstanburgh Castle, a boat trip to Inner Farne and a visit to Beamish. We were fortunate to have fantastic weather and so evening activities included playing cricket and football on the beach, rock pooling, digging huge holes in the sand as well as very creative sand art! Our Year 6 classes were a pleasure to take on the residential visit showing great enthusiasm and team work. Well done to all Year 6 pupils and a huge thank you to the teaching team who accompanied them.

Registered Charity 1026781 Children at Sprotbrough Park Playgroup have had an exciting few weeks with visitors to the group. With the help of Michelle from Forest Friends we went on a Gruffalo hunt –we followed his footprints, finding different animals on the way before discovering where he was hiding. The children also tried some different art and craft ideas – doing Hapa Zome hammering -using hammers and cloths to make leaf pictures and they got messy making mud spiders. We had a visit from Emma the Community police officer who let the children try on police uniforms and have a sit in the police car. They loved the lights and sirens going off best. We are also arranging visits from our local lollipop lady and nursery school teacher to help the children with the transition from Playgroup to nursery school. We’ve been busy baking – making sandwiches, making our own butter and baking our own bread which the children loved taking home – although some couldn’t wait that long and ate it on their way! This week they are taking a tour around the world with activities based on different countries. We’ll be making passports too so they can travel where they want. Playgroup is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings 9.15 – 12-15 for 2 – 3 year olds. If eligible, two and three year old funding can be used. We still have places available for September 2015. If you’re interested contact Alison sprotbroughpark@gmail.com or call in to our Baby and Toddler sessions on a Monday and Thursday mornings 9.30 – 11.00a.m (for 0-3 year olds) where you can stay and play with your child.

Orchard Infant School News
On Friday 5th June, Quantum Theatre came to deliver a new play entitled 'The Writing on the Wall'. This was designed to show children how sequencing sentences can form short narratives. Our children were highly engaged and were encouraged to participate in the play. There has been lots of fabulous independent writing across school as a result! Wednesday 10th June saw Orchard host Doncaster Knight's star Matt Challinor, with his sponsor, Andy Leslie. The rugby player came into school to help our children learn about rugby as part of our sport and human body centre of interest work. Our children had prepared questions to ask Matt, which he answered with enthusiasm. The children then progressed to some practical work on the school field, building on team work and tag rugby skills. The children were highly motivated and engaged in what he and Mr Leslie had planned! A big thank you from all Orchard staff to the pair, the children enjoyed themselves tremendously! Miss Langton (a parent of the school) contributed her efforts to nursery's fund raising for new equipment, by swimming 1500m at Ellerton Water Park in Richmond, North Yorkshire (31st May). She came second in her category and raised a fantastic ÂŁ820, which will be put towards a new outdoor chalkboard, octagonal bench and water tray. Another massive thank you from all the staff! As part of our centre of interest work, children have been asked to 'Keep Active' by logging their exercise in a fitness diary. Children have been eager to share their diverse and exciting fitness examples such as cricket, football, ice skating and dancing. We are also encouraging a healthy and balanced diet to keep our bodies fit and healthy. We will be following a vibrant timetable of sporting events during National School Sport Week (22nd26th June inclusive). Mr Dan will be volunteering his skills alongside other parents and helpers within school. Please see next month's issue for all the highlights!

Richmond Hill Primary School Sherwood Forest All pupils from Year 1 through to Year 5 recently visited Sherwood Forest. Although Robin Hood remained elusive we did discover that Richmond Hill are fantastic nature detectives.
Year 6 History Day Year 6 stepped back in time to experience what it was like living in medieval times with epic battles, jousting tournaments, royal feasts, knights and even a visit to the Apothecary. Staying Healthy The sun was shining as an array of sporting activities adorned the green lush grass of the school field (yet to be scorched by the impending summer heat!). Healthy week is an opportunity for pupils to look at different ways to keep healthy as well as activities around healthy eating and staying safe.

Sporting Achievements Our sporting success goes from strength to strength, here’s a snap shot of our recent achievements! Y5/Y6 Girls’ Kwick Cricket Team travelled to Brodsworth Cricket Club where they won all their matches taking them to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, rain stopped play! We came 3rd in the Y3/Y4 Mixed Kwick Cricket also held at Brodsworth. The Y3 Tennis Team competed against Y4 pupils from eleven different Doncaster schools at Wheatley Tennis Club where they won lots of matches, narrowly missing the semi-finals by just ONE game! Y5/Y6 Boys’ Kwick Cricket Team won the semi-finals held at Richmond Hill which takes them into the Doncaster Finals.
