Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School What a fantastic start to the final half term we have had here at Orchard! During week commencing 6th June, we found out lots of fun and interesting facts about Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the royal family before wrapping up our project on Friday 10th June with a traditional British garden party. The children designed and created unique hats to wear for the day and participated in a parade for the judges to select a winner from each class. We joined in activities such as hook a duck, limbo, ten pin bowling, croquet and welly wanging to name just a few. Children had the opportunity to help bake scones in an end to our traditional British theme. One of our dedicated parent helpers, Mrs Brown, baked a replica cake just like the one Her Majesty herself tucked into. Mrs Rimmer kindly served fish and chips for lunch, in individual boxes so the children could eat in a picnic fashion. The rest of this half term will be spent learning about the Olympics and other sporting events. We have a week jam packed with fun activities for the children to engage in during week commencing 20th June as part of National Sports Week. Please keep an eye out in next month’s issue for an update of the fun we have had!

Richmond Hill Primary Academy Magnificent Marvellous Magic As part of their topic exploring everything ‘Enchanted and Magical’ a fun-filled time was enjoyed by our Year 1 children, including experiencing the delights of singing and dancing along to ‘The Monster Mash’. Sporting Stars In a summer so far awash with ‘typical British weather’ we managed to enjoy a dry sports day. Birthday Greetings Your Majesty Richmond Hill celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday by designing and making cards and bunting. The children particularly enjoyed watching the live internet stream of her birthday celebrations from St. Paul’s Cathedral and learning all about her fascinating life.

Catch of the Day Congratulations to our girls’ kwick cricket team who competed in the Doncaster finals and achieved 2nd place – just pipped to the crease by the winners who had 4 more points! Team Work Makes the Dream Work Year 6 pupils used their team building skills to produce some elaborate dens!

School News from Copley Junior School Year 6 Residential Visit to Northumberland An evening on the beach

Well done to our Year 6 pupils, who have returned from a very enjoyable residential visit to Northumberland. The children had a very busy four days, which included a visit to Vindolanda, the Roman Army Museum, a journey over the causeway to explore the island of Lindisfarne, a boat trip to the Farne Islands landing on Inner Farne and visits to Dunstanburgh Castle, the Grace Darling Museum, Bamburgh Church and Beamish Museum. The children stayed in Seahouses in a hotel next to the beach so evening activities included cricket, paddling in the very cold sea and playing games on the beautiful sandy beach. Many adults at the venues we visited commented on the interest and enthusiasm of the children, as well as their excellent behaviour and polite manners. Of course we expect this from our Copley children, but it is always lovely to hear.

Express Events At Copley we regularly invite parents/carers in to share the children’s learning. At the end of their ‘Beast Creator’ project Year 5 prepared an informative and creative parent presentation with many fascinating facts aboutminibeasts. As part of their ‘Potions’ project about the properties of materials children in Year 4 made bath time products and sold these at their express event. This activity enabled children to develop many skills – persuasive writing in the form of posters and adverts, maths skills in working out the cost of making the products and profit margins, making packaging and then running their stall at the event. We have some budding entrepreneurs in Year 4 as they made an amazing £415! Year 4 Visit to Castleton To launch this half term’s Geography project, Year 4 explorers took part in a long hike around the beautiful landscape of Castleton and compared the landscape of Sprotbrough with that of Castleton. Happy Birthday to Her Majesty To celebrate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty The Queen we held a birthday card design competition. Our winning two entries were posted to The Queen at Buckingham Palace and hampers full of commemorative goodies were presented as prizes. A selection of birthday cards made for Her Majesty One of the winning designs – we loved all the pop out and 3D features of this card, which has been posted to Buckingham Palace. I am sure it will look lovely on The Queen’s mantelpiece.

Our plans for a street party had to be moved inside, thanks to the great British weather! We enjoyed our special party lunch in the hall as a school community, with a rousing rendition of the National Anthem and three cheers for The Queen. Thank you to CSA members who purchased a commemorative coin for each child to keep as a memory of the occasion.

Eve Merton Dreams Trust – Thank You! As part of our recent Sporty Week the children in our Sports Council organised a sponsored walk to raise funds for the Eve Merton Dreams Trust. This is a local charity that helps local people living with cancer to achieve their dreams. Thanks to the generosity of children, staff and parents we raised an amazing £1200 from our sponsored walk for the Eve Merton Dreams Trust. Mr Johnson from the charity came to talk about the work of the Eve Merton Dreams Trust and how it has helped many local people. The charity is a small local one so they are keen to spread news of their work. You can visit their website at www.evestrust.co.uk. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton, Head teacher
