elcome to the July issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow. After the recent horrific events at Manchester and London, followed quickly by the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower, it’s easy to feel heavy hearted and quite helpless. The one thing that has shone brightly throughout these dark days is the human spirit. It has been heart warming to see how all of these communities have supported each other throughout. They have proven we are strong in the face of evil and can find kindness and compassion when tragedy calls. The Scouts annual Gala weekend kicks off on Saturday 15th July with the festival featuring The Torn as well as other live bands. The run will take place as usual on Sunday 16th July with lots of fun activities for everyone. These events are so important to our communities, as well as fund raising for a great cause, its gives us all the opportunity to bump into our neighbours, old and new and encourages us all to feel part and take part in community life. As I send the July issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow to print, we are experiencing one of the hottest weekends I remember. My fingers are crossed for a glorious summer ahead. (just a little cooler please!) The deadline for the August issue will be Wednesday 12th July. The Arrow will be delivered by the last weekend in July.

Richmond Hill Primary Academy
Y2 SATs The Y2 SATs took place over the end of May and we would just like to congratulate all of Year 2 for their brilliant enthusiasm, work and behaviour during their exams. We couldn’t be more proud! It wasn’t all hard work, though. In their down time, pupils took part in an array of activities, including crafting, bug making and even learning about Victorian life! To celebrate the end of SATs week, pupils enjoyed a film afternoon, complete with popcorn and a sing-along! We would like to thank our Y2 parents/carers for all their support, especially leading up to and during SATs. Their support remains such a big part of the pupils’ and the schools success.
Frenchgate Flower Show Update As announced last month, Richmond Hill were delighted to have been chosen as one of the four winners of the Frenchgate Centre’s Flower Show competition. Our garden won for the Imagination Garden category and was inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Our garden was beautifully brought to life by the Frenchgate Centre’s gardening team, unveiled to invited guests and the press on Friday 26th May and was available to view between 26th May – 11th June. Congratulations once again to the pupils and teachers who participated in the design of the garden for creating such a fantastical and whimsical space!

Star Status Awards With the end of the last half term came another Star Status Award group! 135 pupils were awarded with badges; 67 achieved their very first Bronze Award and 68 went on to receive their fabulous Silver Badge, moving up from the Bronze they received in the last half term! Well done to all the pupils who received Star badges today! Year 4 Visit to Doncaster Museum Year 4 pupils visited Doncaster Museum in May to learn all about Romans! Pupils took part in two activities, the first of which was ‘Look Out, The Romans Are Coming’. Pupils dressed up in Roman clothes and learned about lots of different aspects of Roman life, including board games, jewellery, mosaics and pottery! They also participated in a ‘Roman Dig’, trying their hand at archaeology. They were able to look at and learn about Roman artefacts, the history of Romans and even a Roman skeleton! The staff at Doncaster Museum said that the pupils were ‘outstanding’ and they they showed great listening skills. They also commented on how brilliant the pupils’ attitudes towards the work were! Well done Year 4! Spring Fayre In a lovely send-off to last half term, Richmond Hill Spring Fayre was held this afternoon, complete with fairground games, music and even an ice cream stall! Our hall was filled to the brim with activities and treats, which were run by pupil volunteers and staff. Pupils had the opportunity to let loose and enjoy activities including Hoopla, Wheel of Fortune, Camel Treasure Hunt, Splat the Rat and many more. There was even a pupil-led Slime Stall, which proved to be the hit of the fayre! Thank you to everyone who donated cakes & buns for the bake sale and thank you to everyone who donated tombola prizes! We would like to also say a huge thank you to all the pupil volunteers who did an amazing job and were such a huge help to staff today!

School News from Copley Junior School Year 5 ‘Beast Creator’ Express Event After an exceedingly busy half term learning about everything bug-related, Year 5 were ready to showcase their learning to their adults through their all-singing, all-dancing Express event. The children had a brilliant time, sharing all of the interesting facts that they have learned about mini-beasts throughout their ‘Beast Creator’ Cornerstones project. Year 3 Visit to Magna To launch their new Science project on ‘Mighty Metals’ Year 3 visited the Magna Science Adventure Centre. The children had a day of hands-on experiences as they experienced the wonders of Science and Technology by watching displays, taking part in workshops and exploring the interactive exhibits. Highlights of the visit included seeing ‘The Big Melt’; the ‘Fire Pavilion’ in which children found out how heat causes change as well as experiencing the awesome five metre fire tornado, the arc furnace and the electromagnetic crane; investigating magnets; making and testing a hot air balloon; finding out what makes a rocket move and investigating making one from everyday materials.

BBC Music Day Our Year 4 Samba players joined schools across Doncaster for a massed samba workshop and performance. The children played with great enthusiasm and kept the shoppers in Doncaster thoroughly entertained! Year 4 Enterprise Event Well done to Year 4, our budding entrepreneurs, who made a range of bath products in lovely packaging as part of their ‘Potions’ project. With persuasive adverts and promotional materials, the children proved to be very persuasive salespeople
when parents/carers and relatives joined us for the express event. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher

Orchard Infant School
As part of our centre of interest work this half term, all children have had the experience of visiting the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Our topic is focused on Safari Animals and their habitats. Children attended an educational workshop where they learnt about different habitats and the needs of animals to survive there. They were able (if they were brave enough!) to hold some animals including Millie the millipede, Colin the cockroach and Shelley the giant African snail. Of course, there was lots of free time for children to explore the park and learn more facts about different safari animals including lions, tigers and (polar) bears, Oh My! We also enjoyed watching our caterpillars metamorphose into Painted Lady butterflies. Children observed closely over time the changes in the caterpillars including the moulting of their exoskeletons so they could grow. When the caterpillars had transformed into their pupas all children waited eagerly for them to hatch. We are pleased to say that most of them emerged from their chrysalides successfully!

This lovely boy is Roman, a 7 year old Tabby. Roman is a friendly, affectionate cat who is very playful and mischievous, but really likes his own space and will hide when he’s had enough of humanS!. He is fine with other cats, but would be better in a quieter, experienced home with no young children. Roman is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped, and is just one of the cats in our Rescue looking for their new homes. Please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705 if you are interested
