Welcome to the July issue of The Sprotbrough Arrow.

Well, what a watering we had in June, preparing us for the heatwave in July and August (I hope!). Anyone running (or walking) the Sprotbrough annual road race? The race supports 67th Scouts division and as always, promises to be a great family weekend. If you want to get some practice in, visit your local park run at Sandall Park. A 5k run held every Saturday morning at 9am. It’s great fun and attended by a couple of hundred people a week of all abilities. I am sure you have heard of the famous Auckley Show? The show, held this year on Saturday 17th August, is a great opportunity for young and old to get creative and show off their skills. You can enter all sorts of competitions from growing vegetables, taking photographs, making cakes to the best lego model. Check out their website for the full list of competitions. www.auckleyshow.co.uk/html/schedule.html Tickets for the Auckley Show evening event are now available. Find further details on how to get yours on p18, they have a super evening of music lined up from Glam Rock Group ‘The Glamned’ featuring music from the seventies. The deadline for the August issue is Wednesday 10th July. The August issue will be distributed the last weekend in July.

Best wishes Michelle Sidebottom Mobile: 07795 387937 email:michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk

Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semiretired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At our meeting on May 20, Neville Williams spoke about “The Yorkshire Wildlife Park”. Neville took us through the history of the Park, situated near Branton, beginning with Mrs Williams’ original idea, then buying the property in Branton which was a riding stable and small animal attraction at that time, followed by the gradual expansion to the present day. The Park got off to a good start, and then they acquired the lions from Romania, which provided a lot of publicity and further boosted attendances. The Park has developed with new collections of animals as well as being part of international breeding programmes. Our meeting on June 8 was cancelled because it clashed with the Group’s holiday at Slaley Hall in Northumbria. Dave Adgar will now be giving his presentation about the Berlin Wall later in the year. On June wish to thank everyone for suppor ng their recent Nicola Fox spoke about Cusworth Hall and the Spring Fayre at the Stable when over £500 was Battie-Wright family.

The Sprotbrough Knit & Na er Group

raised on the day. This, together with money raised through the sale of handmade goods during the last six months, the ladies were pleased to donate £1500 to local charity Firefly Express. ------------------------------------------------------------------The Jigsaw Puzzle Library and Coffee Mornings held each month at the Stable have been pleased to donate £100 to Yorkshire Air Ambulance and £100 to "b:friend", a local charity suppor ng local people living alone who would welcome a friendly face and chat. If you know someone who would like a call then phone 07523 698530 to speak to a member of their staff. In the seven years the Jigsaw Library has been open £3802 has been donated to over 40 different worthy causes. It wasn't our inten on to raise money but to offer a friendly 'meet and greet place', which has gone from strength to strength. The volunteer team wish to thank everyone for your con nued support. Carole Hall

On July 1 Neil McGregor, of Doncaster Heritage Services, will speak about “Doncaster in Art”, and the following meeting (July 15) will be the Members’ Lunch at the Golf Club. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Des Parks (01302 856188), George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information.

Prince Charming

Prince is one of the long stay rescue dogs at the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre. He is a handsome boy, full of energy and life when outside, who loves running around the paddock with his favourite toy - he is also partial to a good snooze in his kennel. Prince has been at the Centre for many months and his successful re-homing into a loving home is a priority. Caring for animals like Prince, who are in the Animal Centre through no fault of their own requires considerable funding. With rehabilitation high on the list of priorities for the Branch, time and resources are central to achieving our aim and these need funding. One way RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch achieves this is through events that offer supporters a chance to enjoy quality time with friends and family and raise funds to support vital welfare work with animals such as Prince. 2019 has already seen some fantastic events: the Easter Egg Puzzle Hunt was hugely successful and drew in over twice the number of people than it did last year; Big Walkies around the beautiful Thrybergh was a great event, giving folk time to share their love of dogs and dog walking and the Pea ‘n’ Pie Supper and Pub Quiz was a sell-out success, which raised vital funds. All of the money raised is used to support the animal welfare work at the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre and so far this year over 330 dogs, cats, rabbits and small animals have been successfully rehabilitated and re-homed With even more exciting events coming soon, such as the annual Fun Dog Show, Zip Line Challenge and Glitter Disco we will be able to support even more animals like Prince, who depend on us for that second chance. So please come and join us at our events.

If you would like to meet Prince (or any of our animals), contact the Animal Centre – 01302 719790 or visit www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club were out on 2 June enjoying our wonderful countryside. Once again we were lucky with the weather, managing to keep dry in the pub when there was a shower! Three great walks around Ladybower Reservoir in the Peak District were on offer. There was a more challenging walk of 11 miles where we could enjoy spectacular views from Bamford Edge, a mid level walk of 8 miles and a shorter walk of 6 miles. All our walkers, new and old, really enjoyed the day. If you would like to join us on our next walk to the Castleton area on 14 July, please search for Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club on Facebook or visit our website www.doncasterpathfinders.org.uk. If you can't make it in July, why not join us on 11 August when we are off to Grassington in the YorkshireDales

Year 4 Enterprise Event

Well done to Year 4, our budding entrepreneurs, who made a range of bath products in lovely packaging as part of their ‘Potions’ project. With persuasive adverts and promotional materials, the children proved to be very persuasive salespeople when parents/carers and relatives joined us for the express event.

Mountain Explorer Academy

To launch their geography project on mountains, Year 4 entered the Mountain Explorer Academy for an action packed day of learning and activities. Delivered by an experienced mountaineer and expedition leader, the workshop was a mixture of short, interactive presentations and hands-on activities in small teams.

Hopefully the sun will be shining by the time you read this after a wet start to June! We haven’t a final figure yet for the Midsummer Walk donations as Christine from Thorne Rural Lions has been on holiday. Will report back as soon as possible. In the meantime our sincere thanks to everyone who took part (and their sponsors) – we had almost 200 walkers and thankfully it was a dry day. Our grateful thanks also to Lions International, particularly Thorne Rural Lions, for all their hard work. A reminder that we have a stall at Bentley Gala on Sunday, 14th July where we will be selling jewellery and other goodies. The Gala will be in Bentley Park from 1-5pm with lots to do and see for all the family. Come along and join in the fun.

Success in the Spelling Bee Copley Junior’s Spelling Bee was a great success – and a lot of fun too!

A huge well done to our spelling bee competitors from every year group and also to our enthusiastic pupil audience. We saw a very tightly contested competition with six rounds before a single mistake was made and a record-breaking eleven rounds in all. Featured above are our medal and prize winners! We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Mrs Crayton Head teacher

Also Optima International on Askern Road at Toll Bar will be holding their annual Open Day on Friday, 26th July from 12-5pm. Entry is £5 on the day, but £4 if bought from the company beforehand. All rides are free and unlimited. A bar and refreshments are available. This is another popular event and money raised goes to charities (including DCDT). A reminder that we will also have a stall at Auckley Show on Saturday, 17th August. Details will be in next publication. Let’s hope the sun shines for all these events as there is a lot of hard work behind the scenes in organising them. Please let us know if you have any unwanted scarves or jewellery or any tombola/raffle prizes. If you are planning a fundraising event on our behalf we can supply you with T-shirts, sponsor forms, etc. We are at 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far to our Prostate Cancer appeal and to the many groups and organisations who support us.
