Welcome

to the July issue of

Sprotbrough Arrow

Hey, summer’s here! Hands up who is looking forward to summer? The weather in June was lovely and the light nights are such a treat. As many of us remain in this country for our summer break, I hope the sun continues to shine. You will find an application form in this month’s Arrow for the Scarecrow festival, if you want to join in the fun and raise some money for a very good cause, please complete and follow instructions to return. The scarecrow entries were of a very high standard last year and it’s great to see so many locals taking part. The new date of 19th July for the lifting of restrictions may have delayed some community groups from getting back to normal, hopefully, we should be in a position to meet again safely by September. If you want to share your groups information in the August issue, please let me know. The deadline for the August issue is Wednesday 14th July. The August issue will be distributed the last full weekend in July. Michelle Sidebottom

Community News 67th Sprotbrough Scouts— New location 67th Sprotbrough Scouts no longer meet at the Barn. They have moved to Sprotbrough Methodist Church Hall and will resume to meet once restrictions have lifted. They have just one Cub pack now, the Kestrals and they will meet at 6.00pm until 7.30 pm on a Tuesday evening and the Scout section will start straight after Cubs has finished and go on to 9.30pm. Beavers will be held on a Wednesday evening between 5.30 pm and 6.45pm.

Appeal for Volunteers Are you good at DIY, enjoy gardening and would like to help the community? Then St Mary’s church is looking for you! St Mary’s church, community hall and stable stand proudly at the heart of Sprotbrough and there can be few people in the village who haven’t been in one of these buildings for one reason or another. But have you ever thought about how these buildings are maintained or who looks after them? True they are all owned by the Church of England, but their maintenance and upkeep remains with the local church members. The church is looking for volunteers who would like to help in maintaining these community assets. You don’t need to be a church member but just somebody with the requisite skills and time who wishes to see these community assets remain in use at the centre of Sprotbrough for the good of the village. If you would like to know more then please email the church office and we will be in touch. rachel.stmarys.sprotbrough@gmail.com

It is 14 months since we have been in touch with you and we sincerely hope you have all managed to stay safe and well. We have continued to work behind the scenes on your behalf, albeit on a reduced basis. Your donations still kept rolling in thankfully and some organisations have also been fundraising on our behalf for which we are extremely grateful. As a result we are thrilled to report that we have been able to purchase the biopsy machine for the Urology Department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary! It has taken quite a lot of organising during the pandemic which is why we have not been able to let you know before now. The official handover and photoshoot will be on 22nd June, after which we will put all the information on our website. We must say a very special thank you to one of our volunteers, Jenny Liddle, who has been our main contact with DRI regarding the biopsy machine. She has put in a tremendous amount of time and effort, all while dealing with a very serious family illness. We would also like to thank each and every one of you who has contributed in any way towards our prostate cancer appeal. It has been such a strange time and has been difficult at times for everyone, but we are so very grateful for your support. If you would like to get in touch with us our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. In next month’s issue we hope to launch our new appeal, so please look out for our news then. It is so good to be back again in print!

darts secures Youth Music funding

A young person co-hosting a Sing + Sign event at Doncaster College. Photo credit: James Mulkeen

darts has been successful in its bid for three years of Youth Music funding to continue its music and Makaton programme in Doncaster Special Schools. Professional musicians will create music making opportunities with Disabled children and young people that build choice, voice, independence and confidence. Young people will take the lead, designing their own mini-projects and coming up with new tracks, podcasts, radio shows or musicals. There will be lots of performance opportunities in partnership with Doncaster Music Education Hub so that parents, carers and families can see the young people’s talent and progression. This project is supported by Youth Music, using public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Youth Music is a national charity investing in music-making projects that support children and young people aged 0-25 to develop personally and socially as well as musically. darts’ Assistant Director, Helen Jones says “Disabled young people in Doncaster want opportunities to develop their musical, social and life skills. We know that by using music and Makaton, young people can make huge steps with their confidence, musical ability and independent thinking. We are so grateful to Youth Music for supporting this vital work.” darts will be collaborating with Doncaster SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disabilities) Forum to design and develop this project, meaning that ten Disabled young people will be involved in ensuring that the project meets local needs. To find out more about darts’ work, go to the website www.wearedarts.org.uk and sign up to the e-newsletter or contact hello@wearedarts.org.uk

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School

Last half term our topic was all about Africa. Children in Reception learnt about safari animals through imaginative drawing opportunities, small world play and the creative construction of zoos. They had a marvellous time and can tell you lots of new facts! Alongside this, all year groups did some learning about plants and growing and planted their very own sunflower seeds. Some of their science drawings are displayed and some children even managed to label the different parts J On Friday 28th May, Orchard Infant School had a dress down day in support of animal charities. The idea came via a very persuasive letter from one child currently at Copley Junior School and her love for animals. Children and families were asked to donate £1 for coming in non-uniform and helped to raise £199.81. These funds were donated to an elephant sanctuary abroad who made a cake solely out of fruits for the elephants to enjoy. The cake had our school name on it and a special message of thanks was recorded for the children. The elephants devoured their fruit! Our topic of learning this half term is the Olympics. Children are underway learning about the different sporting events, athletes and training for their own Mini-Olympics instead of our annual sports day. The two sports coaches who are working with us currently have lots of fabulous ideas cooking to engage and inspire the children during this event. Keep posted for photographs in next month’s edition! In the next few weeks children will have opportunity to meet their new class teachers ready for September so we are looking forward to getting to know them.

Doncaster Rambler’s Conisbrough Sprotbrough River View

Well it was in February when I received this walk, a River View, today much of the Don was obscured by foliage, not that we minded a bit of shade, as the sun blazed down on us from time to time during the day. The route although relatively simple did require a couple of nifty about turns to stay on the PRoW. Adds to the excitement and mystery of a Ramblers tour. Anyway ten of us set off from Dale Road heading north east up Windgate Hill hugging the tree line on a wide path to pass first under Conisbrough Viaduct then the railway line to reach Sprotbrough Bridge about two and quarter miles later, but not before negotiating two iron “kissing gates” and a heavily rutted tracks. After luncheon on the banks of the Don the return route took us not on the familiar Trans Pennine Trail, but the elevated footpath through Sprotborough Flash where we got the occasional flash of sunlight off the mighty Don. Descending onto the TPT the tarmacked surface providing the ideal substrate for cyclists, who we managed to dodge right and left as we shared the trail. The climb by the side of the viaduct left everyone a little breathless and not just because of the view. We crossed the Don by the Earth Centre and exited via the railway station before a final dramatic view of Conisbrough Castle guided us back to the start. It’s a privilege to lead these Doncaster Ramblers walks and not more so than when a new comer remarks “That was great, loved the walk, loved the company, book me on the next two”! Six and half miles in total PR Doncaster Ramblers The River Don The River Don is a river in South Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It rises in the Pennines, west of Dunford Bridge, and flows for 70 miles (110 km) eastwards, through the Don Valley, via Penistone, Sheffield, Rotherham, Mexborough, Conisbrough, Doncaster and Stainforth. It originally joined the Trent but was re-engineered by Cornelius Vermuyden as the Dutch River in the 1620s, and now joins the River Ouse at Goole.

School News from Copley Junior School

Sports Day Success Our Sports HLTA, Mr Henry, planned a morning of sports for everyone to enjoy, including seated throw, cricket, basketball shot, hockey dribble and javelin to name a few! We all had a wonderful time developing our skills and demonstrated great sporting attitude by cheering and encouraging our team mates! Our Sports Day afternoon continued with a very active theme with the track events, which included: sprint, hurdles, skipping, egg and spoon, football dribble, bat and ball, potato race, bean bag on head, sack race, relay races and Copley's very own spoke relay races as the grand finale. Our Sports Day gave all children so much opportunity to be actively involved. Well done to all the children for trying so hard in their events and for cheering on team mates with great sporting spirit.

Richmond Hill Academy Sports Activity Week Assembly with 200m Champion Beth Dobbin Richmond Hill had a fantastic start to our Sports Activity Week with a Zoom assembly which included special guest Sprotbrough born 200m champion Beth Dobbin. This was Beth’s first Zoom assembly and she was truly inspiring with her messages of hard work, perseverance, resilience and never give up attitude. Inquisitive questions were asked from each year group. We’d like to thank Beth for providing such sporting aspiration to our pupils and congratulate her on her win at the European team champions which took place after her virtual visit with us.

Cre8tive Dance All year groups enjoyed learning street dance skills with Cre8tive Dance. Learning some basic moves then working together as a team to produce a short performance. Developing new skills Kixx Uk provided all year groups with a session on ball skills and team work which was thoroughly enjoyed by all pupils. Inspired by Ash Randall freestyle footballer, our children took to trying out their own ball skills with great success. Healthy Minds Our pupils enjoyed sessions of yoga and activities for healthy minds, here Y2 are enjoying their mindfulness session. Thank you James Ward and his team of fantastic coaches The backbone to our sports activity week activities was Sprotbrough based James Ward and his team from Complete Coaching Solutions @CCSLTDCoach. Here our Y1s are enjoying hockey skills and Y4 loving cricket.

Novel study book launch Y5’s book launch for ‘The Secret Garden’ was an exciting day, split into learning about Yorkshire and about the Punjab. The children completed a treasure hunt of the book themes then also had a science lesson dissecting parts of flowers.

DARTs Up until the summer break Richmond Hill is fortunate to be welcoming weekly visits by members of DARTs (Doncaster Community Arts) who are working with Year 2, 3 and 4 developing the English curriculum with drama. Life goes on! Our school pheasants that moved into the school wild area during lockdown and have stayed with us, have had babies - our children have loved seeing these emerge and flourish.
