Community News AFIA… Away from it all!

The Children’s Society Thanks to residents in Sprotbrough who gave £1423.19 to our collectors between 11 and 25 April. You can bask in your generosity at

AFIA (Away From It All), is a Mothers’ Union holiday scheme to help families who are experiencing stress in their family life, spend quality time together and take a much needed break. Those hoping to have a holiday don’t have to be a member of a church or organisation and Mothers’ Union helps around 2,500 people to have a holiday each year. Sprotbrough Mothers’ Union is proud to be associated with this scheme and being involved helping people, particularly in the Doncaster area.

We hope you can make our cream tea event below!

And all this for £6 only

Tickets will be available in St Mary’s Church or from Victor Hext (854467) All profits will go to the Children’s Society to help it work towards a country where all children are free from disadvantage. You will help, for example, teenager Meg who writes A typical day doesn’t exist. It’s just a good day or a bad day. I care for my mum, my sister 11, and my brother 8, who has learning difficulties. Mum’s mental health issues kicked in when I was about eight – Mum started crying and didn’t want to be a mum any more. The stigma is pretty awful. People don’t understand it but can I blame them? I didn’t know anything about it before Mum got ill. The Children’s Society listened to me and helped me. I like cats because they don’t demand anything – just a bit of love and food. Book your place now Enjoy yourself And help Meg and others who are disadvantaged

School News from

Copley Junior School Many congratulations to our Gymnastics National Gymnastics Success team who competed at the National Gymnastics Finals in Stoke on Sunday 3rd May. Our team competed at county level in the Spring term and we were delighted to be judged as Yorkshire Champions. At the National Finals, the children achieved our highest score ever and were placed 8th out of all the teams in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Many thanks to Miss Hull for her enthusiasm and expertise in coaching the team. Also, we would like to thank one of our parents; his company generously sponsored the new team leotards, to give the final professional touch to the performance! Cross Country Success Many thanks to Miss Hull and Mr Siddall who have coached huge numbers of children in our after school cross country club. A team of 16 children competed at the Cross Country Championships on Saturday 16th May. Well done to everyone who competed in this popular event. Congratulations to:

Cassandre LC - Under 11 – 4th place Our Under 11s Girls’ Team – 7th overall At the end of the whole event our team came 2nd, with Kirk Sandall Junior in first place. We were very proud of the determination and team spirit of our children. Well done to everyone!

‘Wear Something Sporty’ Day

Thank you to everyone who supported our recent ‘Wear Something Sporty Day’. Children and staff dressed in something sporty in support of the Eve Merton Trust. We raised over £150 for this worthwhile charity. Our very own Mr Siddall is playing in a charity football match at the KeepMoat Stadium in a team of Doncaster teachers against ex professional players to raise further funds for the Eve Merton Trust.

Enterprise Skills in Year 4 Well done to our Year 4 children who demonstrated their enterprise skills as part of their creative learning project on ‘Potions’. Writing skills were developed as children wrote adverts, leaflets and persuasive letters to their parents/carers to encourage them to attend and buy products from their bath time shop. The children really enjoyed making a range of bath time treats, including relaxing bath salts, soothing lip balm, soothing body oils, body scrub etc. all packaged beautifully in homemade boxes and packages. We were delighted to see so many parents/carers and relatives at the sale event. The children made just over £350! The project enabled children to develop their enterprise skills and practical mathematics skills as they worked out the costs and profit margins for their products. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher

Orchard Infant School News On Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd of April, all classes at Orchard visited The Deep in Hull as part of this half term’s work. The children really enjoyed the interactive resources available and found out about lots of different sea creatures such as star fish, sting ray, eel and, of course, the new penguins! Our work since has seen us cover animal classifications, food chains and predators. Nursery have been getting green fingered in their garden, growing herbs to sell to raise much needed funds for the new nursery building. Parents will be given opportunity to buy these plants in a little while. Thursday 7th May saw Emma, our local police officer, visiting our Year 2 children to talk about road safety. Although they knew lots of information already, they still learnt lots about toucan and puffin crossings and much much more!

Richmond Hill Primary Academy

Richmond Hill Primary Academy Choir Our School Choir is going from strength to strength. Winners of this year’s Young People’s Choir at the Don Valley Festival, the choir received an ‘outstanding’ rating from the judges. Not resting on our laurels, first prize for the best Junior Choir was well deserved from our next competition the Robin Hood Music and Drama Festival. The competition was held at Hill House School with the judges remarking “you are a focussed, well presented choir, you sing with confidence and a shared identity”. The choir epitomises the school’s focus on perseverance and excellence in all we do, along with the expectation of exemplar behaviour and sportsmanship.

VE DAY – 70th Anniversary Celebrations

18

Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements

Red, White and Blue reigned supreme at Richmond Hill to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of VE Day. A street party helped recreate the mood of the day with jam sandwiches and potted meat sandwiches amongst the frugal fare. South Yorkshire Inter-School Spelling Bee Final The earlier rounds of the Spelling Bee competition were held before Easter in schools in the South Yorkshire area. During the middle of May we played host to the South Yorkshire InterSchool Final with the winners of the preliminary heats from five schools being welcomed to the final competition. Tension was rising as competitors took to the stage to spell it out in triumphant style. After a close fought knock out competition we were delighted that the eventual winner was Dylan Hill from Richmond Hill who thoroughly deserved the accolade. Magical Times! The Wizards and Witches of the Magic Carpet Theatre Company visited school to transport our children to a magical time to meet all manner of creatures including a talking frog and an invisible cat!
