Welcome to the June issue of The Sprotbrough Arrow.

Sprotbrough, get ready for the family event of the year! Sprotbrough Scouts Gala and Road Race is to be held on Sunday 17th June, have you registered yet? There is also a ‘Party in the Park’ the evening before, so get ready for a busy, fun weekend. The WI are also holding a summer fayre on Saturday 2nd June at the Church Hall in Sprotbrough. Did someone mention Christmas? Sorry, but we have some fabulous news to share, so yes, we are talking about Christmas in June! Read this month’s Arrow for more information... The deadline for the July issue will be Wednesday 13th June. The July Arrow will be delivered by the last full weekend in June.

Community News We aim to provide better refreshments like hot chocolate, mulled wine and cakes. As part of our expansion plans, we need a sponsor to light the tree at the top of Boat Lane (anyone out there please contact us for details). It is hoped to make the event self-sustaining, so would welcome contributions in our buckets on the night! To create a wonderful experience, we will have more lights this year and a better P.A. system so everyone can hear all that goes on! •

I wonder if this is the first mention of Christmas 2018!!! Please read on and you will see why we have asked for this piece to be added in this edition. Last November we laid on Sprotbrough Christmas Lights on the village green and were amazed at the support of so many. There were lights in the Christmas tree, trees around the green, in the Churchyard, outside the tea rooms and the Doctors surgery. The attendance impressed too as did the help we received! With so much support, we intend to make the annual event bigger and better! Last month a group of us met to begin planning this year’s event. Because this necessarily involves parish and local councils we have to make plans early. So in order to keep everyone up to date these are the main points: • We have applied to close off the access roads for about 2 hours in order to allow Santa's sleigh to arrive and to provide more space to enjoy the event. • We intend to erect a small marquee on the grass to hold a band of young musicians and local choir • We aim to provide better refreshments like hot chocolate, mulled wine and cakes.

To make this a truly community event, we would like to involve schools, churches, WI, scouting, music and any other local organisations (please email me if you’d like to take part). We thought that it would be good too to have someone to make the SWITCH-ON and would like nominations. Please e-mail me with your nominated person and why you think they should be the one to switch on! And lastly we need you……Everyone! It WILL certainly be cold. It MIGHT rain. Gales MAY blow and HOWL, but we still need you all to be there! Let’s put Sprotbrough Christmas Lights on the map! Note the date now; Saturday 24th November at 5.30pm. Many thanks, Carol Rees Carolmaryrees@hotmail.co.uk

School News from Copley Junior School Year 5 Residential Visit to Robinwood The Year 5 residential visit to Robinwood has been action packed and a great success. The children took part in such a varied range of activities, including canoeing, Knights’ Challenge, the giant swing, the pirhana pool challenge, raft building, crate challenge, nightline, team building activities, archery, zip wire, caving and climbing. We have covered the entirety of the National Curriculum expectations for outdoor and adventurous activity and the visit has been superb for children’s personal development. We have seen qualities of team work, independence, resilience, decision making and risk taking all flourish. We are really proud of the children’s superb behaviour during the visit and their support of each other. Well done Year 5! Year 5 Visit to the Tropical Butterfly Park Year 5 visited the Tropical Butterfly House in Sheffield to launch their new minibeasts project. The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the venue, taking part in a minibeasts workshop and discovering the butterflies in the Butterfly House. Exciting Science at Copley Year 4’s ‘Potions’ Science project has seen children investigating the properties of solids, liquids and gases. Year 4 learn about sublimation (this is when a solid changes directly into vapour without passing through the liquid phase). As part of their enterprise work Year 4 have been making bath time products to sell to their parents. In Design Technology they have created packaging and in their English lessons children have been writing very persuasive adverts for their products. Children greatly enjoyed a workshop session led by an aroma therapist where they made a chocolate face mask and prepared bath salts. We look forward to seeing which company has the most profit at the end of the enterprise event! We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes,E.A. Crayton, Head teacher
