Richmond Hill Primary Academy

Y6 SATs We would like to say congratulations and well done to our fabulous Year 6 pupils, who have recently undertaken their SATs. Pupils gave it their all during SATs week, doing themselves and Richmond Hill proud! After what must have been an incredibly tough week, the staff and pupils of Year 6 treated themselves to a well-deserved picnic, complete with food, drink and music! Thank you parents/carers for your continued support of both the pupils and the Academy, which remains a driving force behind our success.

KS1 Growing Area The staff in Key Stage 1 were hard at work giving their playground a makeover during the Easter holidays creating a Music Wall, a stage, an outdoor classroom and a Growing Area! The Growing Area has been set up to help move the curriculum outside, encouraging the children to learn about plant life cycles and how to care for the environment. The Key Stage 1 staff are also hoping to use the Growing Area to plant and grow seeds for the children to sell, encouraging enterprise work. We would like to say a huge thank you to Mr & Mrs Tinker, Ms Hepworth, Mr & Mrs Hayes and The Lumleys for their generous donations, which have helped to give a fantastic start to the Growing Area!

School News from Copley Junior School

Year 5 Residential Visit to Robinwood

The Year 5 residential visit to Robinwood has been action packed and a great success. The children took part in such a varied range of activities, including canoeing, Knights’ Challenge, the giant swing, the pirhana pool challenge, raft building, crate challenge, nightline, team building activities, archery, zip wire, caving and climbing, not to mention rocket building! We have covered the entirety of the National Curriculum expectations for outdoor and adventurous activity and the visit has been superb for children’s personal development. We have seen qualities of team work, independence, resilience, decision making and risk taking all flourish. We are really proud of the children’s superb behaviour during the visit and their support of each other. Well done Year 5!

Exciting Science at Copley Year 4’s ‘Potions’ Science project has seen children investigating the properties of solids, liquids and gases. We are very grateful to Dr Fran from Cornerstones who visited school to lead a morning full of learning and exciting experiments Year 4 learn about sublimation (this is when a solid changes directly into vapour without passing through the liquid phase) As part of their enterprise work Year 4 have been making bath time products to sell to their parents. In Design Technology they have created packaging and in their English lessons children have been writing very persuasive adverts for their products. Children greatly enjoyed a workshop session led by an aromatherapist where they made bubble bath and prepared bath salts. We look forward to seeing which company has the most profit at the end of the enterprise event! We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher

Orchard Infant School News During week commencing 24th April all classes visited Austerfield Study Centre on the outskirts of Doncaster. Here children had some wonderful opportunities to get close to mini-beasts such as a hissing cockroach, tree frog, giant snail and fire bellied toad. The children also got chance to experience pond dipping in the centre’s natural and man-made ponds. They caught some really interesting pond animals which they took back to the centre’s classroom to study under microscopes! This trip has been an excellent stimulus for producing work back in school including recount writing and science work linking to food chains and animal habitats. Orchard staff would like to extend thanks to the centre staff at Austerfield for sharing their expertise and knowledge.

DON GORGE COMMUNITY GROUP NEWS UPDATE – 1 MAY 2017

CALLING ALL TESCO EXTRA SHOPPERS. We have been short-listed for the Tesco BAGS OF HELP fund. From anytime within the next few days until the end of June 2017, you will be able to vote for us at Tesco Extra at Balby and the Bessacarr Express by placing the token provided when you shop in the slot allocated to us. There are three grants of £1000, £2000 and £5000 so we are hoping for the larger of the three which will go towards our latest conservation project. Please support our grant application by voting for us. NEW CONSERVATION PROJECT Our conservation volunteers have now commenced work on this project which is adjacent to the Fish & Eel Pass on the south side of the River Don. The aim is to clear a footpath, take out trees and rebuild an historic wall and steps from the area of the house that was originally sited near the Fulling/Flint Mill. £2000 has already been received from The Don Network towards this project. It is possible that in addition to their normal Tuesday working, our volunteers may also work on some Thursdays. Contact us to find out. The normal Tuesday dates for May and June are as follows: 9 and 23 May, 6 and 20 June and every other Tuesday after that. Meet at 10 am. All our conservation volunteers are currently from Sprotbrough, so, as this project is on the Warmsworth side of the Gorge, residents from there would be particularly welcome. If weekdays are impossible, it is possible a weekend could be organised now and again. ROTARY CLUB GRANTS We are currently making an application for a grant to purchase equipment stolen when our container was broken into last year so that the volunteers can continue to do regular maintenance work which is always necessary. TREES OVERHANGING THE RIVER You may have noticed that the large tree that had been overhanging the river near the river bridge for some years has now been cut back. Other trees further up the river have also received the same treatment by the Environment Agency’s (EA) contractor and we are now expecting them to return to shred the brash and make log piles with the bigger pieces. Anyone walking down the footpath from Warmsworth to the hairpin bend will have noticed that the steps at the bottom have been renewed. Damage had been caused, probably by motorcyclists and other offroad vehicles, but was finished off by the EA’s contractor getting a tractor to the riverside. Very kindly the contractor has taken responsibility for the repair and has done an excellent job so a big thank you to them. AUDIO TRAILS As part of their plan to increase access to the River Don, the Don Catchment River Trust (DCRT) is creating the Don Valley Way Heritage Trail from Sheffield to Doncaster, with a series of walks branching off from it. Two of these cover Sprotbrough, ie the Don Gorge and Sprotbrough Village. These will be available as leaflets as well as audio trails for use with mobile ‘phones. Recording is starting soon, so look out for further information. THEMED WALKS The next one is “Beating the Bounds of Warmsworth Parish” on Sunday 21 May, led by Cllr Alan Bennett of Warmsworth. Meet at the Sibelco Quarry entrance on Sheffield Road at 10 am. Following that, “A Brief History of Time – a Geological walk through the Don Gorge” will take place on Sunday 4 June. Meet at the car park on Boat Lane at 10.30 am. Strong shoes/boots recommended. Please let me know if you would like to join this as numbers will be limited. New conservation volunteers are always welcome and for more information, please contact: Liz Reeve, Secretary to the Don Gorge Community Group Tel: 01302 313030 – Email: lizreeve@dongorgecommunitygroup.com

Fun Dog Show

Lass the Lurcher is looking forward to the RSPCA Fun Dog Show at the Animal Centre on Great North Road, Bawtry, on June 11th from 11am to 3pm. There are plenty of classes to enter for both adult and child handlers and lots of stalls and refreshments to complete a great family day out. Lass will be at the show, but what she really wants is a forever home. She has been with the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre for quite a while now, always overlooked in favour of younger dogs. She is a lovely girl who in spite of her 12 years doesn’t act her age. She is a little timid at first but she soon comes around for a fuss and a cuddle and loves to be groomed. She has limited movement in her hips and suffers from carpal (wrist) hyperextension. The injury is unfortunately degenerative and usually associated with older dogs. She gets on with some dogs but is looking for a quiet home with no other animals to live out the remainder of her life in a loving and peaceful environment. Ideally a home with older children (12+) who can respect her needs as an older dog. If you are able to offer Lass a forever home, please contact us on 01302 719790 or email info@rspcadrb.org.uk. Visit www.rspcadrb.org.uk to view our other animals looking for a new home. And don’t forget to come along to the Fun Dog Show to meet Lass and the team – everyone is welcome whatever shape or size your dog is! The Centre receives no Government or lottery money. You can help by bringing in unwanted clothes, toys, bedding, curtains, books and bric a brac (phone 01302 719790 if you need it collecting); or make a mobile donation – text SYAC14 £5 to 70070. Keep up to date with local RSPCA news at www.facebook.com/rscpadrb. The Centre is open six days a week 11am to 4pm (closed Wednesdays).

Beware of Sneak in Burglaries...

In South Yorkshire, we the Police, refer to a ‘Crime calendar’ in relation to the type and volume of crime we expect to occur. Crime statistics prove that at different times of the year, certain crimes increase in number. We adapt or introduce a strategy in an effort to combat these increases. During early spring and into summer, the number of sneak-in burglary offences increase, along with thefts from sheds and outbuildings in gardens. As the good weather improves, people often spend more time outside in their garden; this can be time spent relaxing or working in the garden itself. Whatever your reason for being in the garden do not leave your house door unlocked. If you are in the rear garden and not in sight of the rear door, secure that door as well. Offenders have and will continue to take advantage of the weather and simply walk into houses with unlocked and in some cases, open doors. If you are inside the house, require some ventilation, and decide to open a window, always secure that window when you leave that particular room. If a window is open, the thief can reach in and steal anything within reach or open the window and climb into the room. I am preparing my garden for the growing season. My lawnmower and garden tools have been serviced, cleaned and sharpened. I am lucky in that I can secure my garden tools and car in my garage. Garden tools such as mowers, trimmers and strimmer’s are in demand during the summer and if left unattended in a garden or an open shed or garage, they will be an easy target for a thief. Lock away your property when not in use. I have marked my lawn mower, hedge trimmers etc. with my postcode and house number using an electric engraving tool and then highlighting this using bright yellow paint. By marking it visibly, you are making less attractive to someone else and therefore it is less likely to be stolen. Even thieves prefer pristine unmarked tools; they can sell it for a higher price. Burglary prevention advice can be found on the South Yorkshire police website at

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. On Monday 1 May our guest speaker was Steve Payne whose subject was Myanmar, the Time Machine. This was an illustrated presentation about the country Myamarr, which those of us of a certain age still think of as Burma. The “Time Machine” in the title referred to the fact that the year date in Myamarr is in the 1300’s, not the 2000’s of the Western world and although businesses use the current Western date, many in the countryside prefer their own system. The talk covered the extensive culture of the country as well as comments on the political situation. Later in the month, on the 15th, we welcomed for the first time Peter Davis, the former Elected Mayor of Doncaster. This was a timely presentation, falling as it did just after the Mayoral and Local elections in Doncaster. There was an outing to The National Memorial Arboretum near Lichfield on Thursday 10 May. On the ’sporting’ front, the Danum Probus crown green bowling season got underway towards the end of April at Armthorpe Community Centre. Janet Canning from English Nature will be our speaker on June 5 the speaker and the subject will be the Humberhead Peatlands. There is also a meeting on Monday June 19. Any interested men who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Geoff Firth (01302 849734), David Allen (01302 885813 or John Gregory (01302 532032) for more information.

These two lovely crossbreed girls are looking for a new home together. Lily (black & white)- is 10, and Sasha is 7, and they have lived together from puppies. They are really affectionate, happy dogs who would love a new sofa to curl up on. They are still quite lively, and would really enjoy nice walks and a garden to play in. They are both good with other dogs, cats and children, and are no trouble in the house. They are neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you are interested in meeting these smashing girls, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705
