Welcome
to the June issue of the
Sprotbrough Arrow What an amazing gift to be granted as we start the celebrations of Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The Arrow is so proud to be part of Doncaster City and very excited for the future.
Jubilee plans are well under way throughout the villages with something planned for everyone. Check with your Parish Council for details. Many residents are organising their own street parties for Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June so check for any road closures. The Scarecrow festival is warming up for September, you will find a registration form delivered to all Sprotbrough residents with this month’s Arrow. The July issue deadline is Wednesday 15th June. The magazines will be delivered the last full weekend in June. I hope everyone has a wonderful Jubilee weekend making special memories with friends and family. Best wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk arrowpublications.co.uk

Community News
Doncaster is a City!
Many of us woke up to the news on Friday 20th May that Her Majesty the Queen has given Doncaster town, City status along with a number of other UK towns. This is amazing news and I am so excited to see what we can achieve in the coming years. Doncaster has so much already going for it with Doncaster Sheffield Airport, Yorkshire Wildlife Park, IPORT, Great Yorkshire Way, Danum Gallery, Library and Museum, Cast and of course, the famous Doncaster Racecourse, not to mention the fantastic people and businesses. There are of course, areas that are in great need of improvement and this new City status takes us one step closer to achieving a better place to live and work for us all. Nick Fletcher MP for Don Valley said ‘I am delighted that after such a long campaign against many worthy other towns the bid put in by Doncaster Council has been recognised and Doncaster has finally been granted City status. I have worked hard for this moment as have others. This will help us build a strong local economy in Doncaster. New businesses. New jobs. New money. City status will really stimulate this. This is what I was elected to do. Bring change that is positive in every respect. Fantastic news!’ Doncaster MBC put out a statement on facebook to say ‘We are VERY pleased to confirm that Doncaster has won City Status as part of Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations! Doncaster is one of 8 new cities to have won the honour. Thank you to everyone who gave us such amazing support to make our bid a winning one!’ There will no doubt be many more questions raised as to what next, but this is a fabulous start to the new future of Doncaster City.

Community News Rev. John Lyth Memorial Plaque Refurbished Not long after the Reverend John Lyth’s death, a memorial plaque was commissioned and installed in front of a tree on the corner of Farcliff and Main Street in Sprotbrough. The location was considered ideal as Rev. Lyth would be seen there, usually daily and in his cassock, greeting parents and children as they passed to and from the schools and nursery. He was Rector of Sprotbrough for thirty years (1952 -1982), appointed Rural Dean of Doncaster in 1959 and Canon of Sheffield Cathedral in 1966. A popular figure in the village, John Lyth took great interest in the conservation and preservation of Sprotbrough. Community engagement was also important to him as was his support for and involvement in community events. Over the years, the memorial plaque suffered deterioration and was restored some years ago but recently the plaque looked sad again. Parishioner, Raymond Ekins suggested that a comprehensive refurbishment was necessary and that he would take on the responsibility on behalf of the church if wished. St Mary’s Church covered his expenses for paint and Ray removed the sign, had it shot blasted and treated courtesy of Polydon Industries Ltd. He highlighted the lettering in gold, lacquered and then re-affixed the sign. Our photo shows Ray tightening the fixings, completing the installation. He's made a firstclass job of the refurbishment which should now last many years more! Dave Mears

We have had a super busy half term at Orchard so far! It has been amazing to finally welcome people back into school and our children have started enjoying many of the experiences they used to have pre co-vid. Year 2 children have been baking once again and many parents have expressed their interest in coming in to school to whip up tasty crea ons with a small group of friends. It is our hope that all Year 2 children will have had the opportunity to bake before they leave us in the summer. On Monday 25th and Thursday 28th April, children had the opportunity to share their work with their parents through a ‘Work Share’ workshop. Parents were welcomed into school by the class teachers and spent half an hour looking through work from this year with their child. Children were excited and enthusias c to talk about their learning and share their achievements.

Open the Book’ came back into school for their first post co-vid performance on Wednesday 11th May. The children were so excited to join in with their introductory song and watching their ac ng of Nehemiah. The key message was about endurance through the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. The staff would like to extend their sincere thanks to the volunteers of St Mary’s Church for their con nued commitment to the religious educa on of our children. On Thursday 12th May, parents were welcomed into school for an Internet Safety workshop led by the Compu ng coordinator. We aimed to help parents understand what they can do to give children the best experience of going on the internet. We explored age boundaries, safe searching and useful ps to keep children safe online.

RICHMOND HILL PRIMARY ACADEMY
Ofsted Inspection We are very proud to officially share the news that Richmond Hill Primary Academy remains a good school following a Section 8 inspection in February. Inspectors noted that the academy’s values of collaboration, aspiration, resilience and endeavour are promoted through the school. They also said pupils contribute well to the community. The school’s support team provides pupils with effective social and emotional support. Pupils listen carefully in lessons and join in class discussions enthusiastically. Staff and leaders work well as a team to help each other and share ideas. We are delighted that Richmond Hill is again acknowledged by Ofsted as a good school. We are very proud of the education that is provided for our children along with the thorough SEND and safeguarding practices which have been recognised. We are the champions! What an amazing day our Y4 and Y5 mixed football team had when taking part in the ‘Stoneacre Cup’ at the Eco-Power Stadium. We were thrilled that they were the winning team and what a journey they had throughout the whole tournament. Pure teamwork co-ordinated expertly by their coach Mr Burke. Congratulations, we are all so very proud of you all - and an amazing £625 as a prize along with a full football kit.

SATs Superstars We are so very proud of our wonderful Y6 pupils for how utterly amazing they have been during SATs week. Absolute superstars ⭐ Also our caring dedicated staff who have provided not only the learning to help them, but the nurture and support to let them fly. They certainly enjoyed their treat of a movie afternoon along with popcorn and hotdogs to celebrate the end of the week.

Sprotbrough MU’s Platinum Jubilee Cream Tea is a hit! Many from the community came to Sprotbrough Mothers’ Union Cream Tea to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee on 26th April 2022. (The Queen is Mothers’ Union’s patron). Such was the turnout, that extra chairs and tables were needed; so, well done the bakers as everyone was able to enjoy homemade scones, jam and cream and a cuppa. Stalls included: homemade cakes, books, crafts, plants, two raffles, mystery gifts (this proved really popular) and Royal Teddy (you had to guess the place he was to visit!) £820 was raised with all funds going to AFIA (Away From It All), Mothers’ Union’s charitable holiday scheme. A most enjoyable and worthwhile afternoon, thanks to everyone who helped and supported the event.

DON GORGE COMMUNITY GROUP
On the 16 May, Emma will notify everyone of a meeting to be held on Monday 13 June 2022 at 10 am at the Goldsmith Centre, thereby giving a clear 28 days’ notice (in accordance with the Constitution), at which voting can take place.
It is with some sadness that I have to report that the Don Gorge Community Group, as it has existed since 2006, is ending. However, it is hoped that it will begin a new life under the same name and Constitution, but with a different committee structure. Following the issuing of this letter to everyone involved, I will be retiring completely and I am hoping that, although with a different focus, the same ethos will continue and that the conservation volunteer team will thrive and strengthen into the future to continue the excellent work it has done for the past 16 years. A proposal has been put forward that the membership of the Committee currently stated in the Constitution should in future be as follows:
This invitation is open to Friends as interested parties, as well as more regular associates, such as committee members and conservations volunteers, so please feel free to put your name forward if you wish to do so. Elizabeth Reeve Trustee
“The Committee, when complete, shall consist of seven (7) people who are resident in the parishes of Sprotbrough & Cusworth and Warmsworth, (with the possible exception of the DMBC representative) ie Chair, Secretary, Treasurer A conservation volunteer A councillor appointed by Sprotbrough and Cusworth Parish Council A councillor appointed by Warmsworth Parish Council A representative appointed by DMBC”
