Welcome to the June issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow Wow! Sprotbrough, you are amazing! The effort and commitment from residents and local business to show off your village in the Tour De Yorkshire was astonishing. The village looked superb and your spirit was full of encouragement and team work. The day was buzzing despite the weather and the turnout was fantastic. A huge well done to all the organisers and everyone who contributed to the event. Credit to Dave Glover for Last month’s Arrow front cover. As usual, we have lots of lovely news from our primary schools giving us an insight into what the children in the village have been up to. A huge well done to all of them who have now finished their SATS and assessments. I wish our young people who are embarking on GCSE’s and A levels, the very best of luck with their exams and their chosen next steps. The deadline for the July issue is Wednesday 15th June. The July Arrow will be delivered the last full weekend in June.

School News from Copley Junior School
Music at Copley Junior School We are grateful to Sprotbrough Music Society for organising a professional performance from ‘Travelling by Tuba’ for us. The concert took children around the world, with instruments and pieces of music from different countries. The experience was educational and great fun too! Cross Country Success Well done to our Copley Cross Country Team who were very successful in the Doncaster Championship. Our boys’ team came 1st in the Under 11 boys’ event, retaining the trophy for the age group. Team members were placed 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th! All the team represented the school very well with excellent sporting behaviour, so well done to everyone.

Extra-Curricular Activities This year we launched the Children’s University initiative. Over 60% of pupils now have a Children’s University passport. The children record all the hours they spend at extra-curricular activities in their passport. In a recent Achievement assembly we presented over 70 certificates to children to recognise the learning they are undertaking after the end of the school day. A special mention to Grace M who has completed an amazing 265 hours of learning outside school – and we only started our Children’s University initiative in November! We offer a huge range of extra-curricular activities in school to extend children’s learning and to provide enjoyable and fun activities too. This includes archery, cadet club (military exercises), art, cross country, Spanish, multi skills, gym, magic, aromatherapy, street dance, musical theatre, skipping, yoga and balloon modelling! This week, children made a relaxing bath oil or bubble bath, choosing the fragrance and the colour of their product and as you can see, the balloon modelling club members are becoming very skilled!
We are very proud of all our Year 6 pupils as they tackled their Year 6 SATs tests. Year 6 responded with their usual enthusiasm to our offer of early morning yoga and breakfast sessions and the hall was full at 8am each day. Our yoga teacher led a variety of exercises, stretches and meditation activities to calm, energise and motivate the children followed by plenty of toast and juice!

Ofsted Inspection Copley Junior School was inspected by Ofsted in April and our report is now published. Ofsted awarded the following grades following our inspection:
Overall Effectiveness: Good Effectiveness of leadership and management: Outstanding Quality of teaching, learning and assessment: Good Personal development, behaviour and welfare: Outstanding Outcomes for pupils: Good
Ofsted said:
“‘My child is thriving and coming on in leaps and bounds’ is typical of the many comments from parents.” “The school motto ‘Believe, Achieve, Succeed’ amply reflects the culture of ambition within the school community.” “The school’s rich and exciting curriculum provides many enjoyable learning experiences. Pupils say they often find their lessons fun.” “Teachers and learning support assistants skilfully ask probing questions to get pupils thinking hard about their work.” “Outstanding leadership at all levels has driven rapid improvement since the previous inspection.” “This is a school that is going from strength to strength. A very strong shared sense of vision and purpose, underpinned by detailed and thorough management systems, has enabled the school to improve rapidly.” “The school’s work to promote pupil’s personal development and welfare is outstanding.” “Parents who made their views known to an inspector were overwhelmingly supportive of the school and highly appreciative of the school’s work to promote pupils’ welfare. ‘A lovely, caring school; like a family unit’ and ‘a very happy school’ are typical of the many comments from parents.” “There is a tangible sense of belonging in school. A group of pupils agreed: ‘Copley is about bonding. We are a community here.’” “The behaviour of pupils is outstanding.” “During the inspection there was a hard-working ‘buzz’ in every classroom. Pupils demonstrated unfailingly positive attitudes to learning. No pupils were observed off-task at all.” “Pupils have extremely positive attitudes to learning. Indeed, there was an audible gasp of disappointment when a mathematics lesson ended during the inspection. The pupils explained: ‘We were really enjoying our work and lost track of time.’” The last three years have seen significant school improvement work at Copley Junior, with changes to all aspects of our provision. I am so proud of everyone in our school community for what we have achieved together. The report praises the work of everyone – children, supportive parents, teachers, support staff, middle and senior leaders and governors. We are well placed to develop outstanding practice across all areas as we move forward and plan for further school improvement. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. Crayton Head teacher

Tour De Yorkshire A great success for Sprotbrough The Tour De Yorkshire came through Sprotbrough on Saturday the 30th thanks to pleas from local residents to change the route. Despite the weather, Sprotbrough saw residents and visitors alike turn out for the cycle race passing through, 15000 people in total enjoyed the festivities throughout the village. The bands at Sprotbrough Country club drew many people to the centre of the village giving them a chance to see the queen’s guard and the royal British legion call the cubs, scouts and beavers to arms as the men’s race passed. The Sprotbrough community fund, that was set up by Paul Hall at Sprotbrough Club managed to raise £3100 that will be put back in to projects within Sprotbrough. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this amazing day.

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School What an exciting time our children here at Orchard have had during May! At the end of April they enjoyed participating in the activities centred around the Tour de Yorkshire. We created a large piece of artwork from tractor tyres and potted plants which was located on our school field. Additionally, we produced lettering from Easter egg foil for the community work on the field. Although the helicopter didn’t pass over Sprotbrough, we did manage to capture some of our own unique photographs to remember the event by. One of our pupil’s designs was selected to be printed in large format to create a banner which was later taken onto the route for the cyclists to see as they were passing. Another one of our exciting activities including making bunting from jerseys similar to those worn by the cyclists which was then displayed outside the school building.

James from Active Fusion has been working with our year two children to teach them some cricket skills and will be coming into school for the next few weeks to continue with his work. The children have been very engaged and enthusiastic about the additional PE time they have got to spend outdoors on such a great team sport!

Harmonious Harmonicas Year 1 pupils learning to play the harmonica. What a delight! HITTING THE RIGHT NOTE! Music has increasingly become part of our fabric, with a great breadth of activities available for our pupils to enjoy. We have a school choir; individual singing lessons; guitar/piano tuition; KS2 pupils have whole class singing lessons as part of their electives programme, Y4 have weekly flute lessons and Y1 are learning how to play the harmonica. To cap all of that, our Y5 pupils have been receiving opera lessons from Opera North which will lead to a performance at The Cast Theatre in July! Our Choir recently delivered a phenomenal performance at the Robin Hood Festival and were awarded First Place. The feedback from the Adjudicator was glowing with a category of ‘Outstanding’ being given. We are extremely proud that following our success at the 2015 event, we were able to return to Hill House School and retain the 2016 championship. This is extremely good news for a school choir which was only formed less than 18 months ago. We are delighted that the following pupils achieved Distinctions or Merits in their recent London College of Music singing exams. What an achievement! Well done to Emma Wiggins, Holly Heptinstall, Lily Fletcher, Jessica Dixon, Eve Holmes, Ella Mackland.

MATHS MONARCHY The gauntlet was recently thrown down to pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 to participate in our first Maths Monarchy Competition to find our ‘Mathstermind’ Champions. They certainly rose to the times table challenge and following a thrilling final, Jasmine Dong was crowned KS1 Champion and Abigail Greaves our KS2 Champion.
