Welcome to the June issue of The Sprotbrough Arrow.
Well done to everyone who has just taken their SATS exams in year 6. This is the end of what can be a really stressful time for young people (as well as teachers, parents and carers!). Also, good luck to everyone taking their GCSE’s and further education exams. It takes a lot of work and effort to achieve the grades you need but don’t forget to take a break, go outdoors and leave the screens behind, if only for an hour a day. After enjoying a wonderful treat out walking in Derbyshire with a lovely friend, It’s great to see so many walking groups such as the Ramblers, Doncaster Path Finders and the Dearne Valley Walking Group, all providing a fabulous way to keep fit and keep connected to people and the outdoor life. Give them a go, there is nothing better than a good walk somewhere new and even better when someone else has organised it. The deadline for the July issue is Wednesday 19th June. The July issue will be distributed the last weekend in June.
Best wishes Michelle Sidebottom Mobile: 07795 387937 email:michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk

DANUM PROBUS CLUB
Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. Tony Barber was the speaker on Monday 15 April. Tony’s presentation was entitled “The history of the St. Leger, the World’s Oldest Classic Horserace. This was a fascinating account of the ups and downs of the race since its inception in 1776 until the present time. It started as what was called a sprint in the 18th century ie 2miles in one heat only, not about 4 miles in several heats in the same day as sued to be the case. And with coming of the railways, the race became very popular with trainers and spectators. On May 6 Tony Dodsworth was “Following the Much Pichu Trail”. This Presentation was about getting to the Machu Pichu ruins on foot walking from Cusco in 4-5 days. Although the total distance of this hike was not huge (20 odd miles), the fact that it was done at altitude, much of it up and down not very level stairways, makes it quite an achievement. The effort involved in this well organised adventure was eased by having porters carry luggage and set up camps. This was a different insight into what one usually hears about Machu Pichu, and very welcome for that. And on May 20 Neville Williams’ subject was “The Yorkshire Wild Life Park”. On June 3 David Adgar will speak about “The Berlin Wall”, and on June 17 Nicola Fox’s subject will be “Cudworth Hall and the Battie-Wright Family”. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Des Parks (01302 856188), George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information.

Kitchen makeovers
beyond your wildest dreams!
Dream Doors Doncaster Unit 4 Mill Street Shopping Centre Armthorpe DN3 3DL Tel: 01302 639801 Email: dn@dreamdoors.co.uk
Now celebrating its irst anniversary, Dream Doors based at Unit 4 Mill Street Shopping Centre in Armthorpe offers kitchen makeovers and re-designs at less than half the cost of a full kitchen re it.
Owned and managed by husband and wife team Jerry and Emma Innesbeer, along with the Showroom Manager – Abi Sheppard, Dream Doors has gained an impeccable reputation for transforming old and tired looking kitchens by simply replacing and upgrading the constituent parts. This has proved to be a more cost-effective option compared with ripping the entire kitchen out and starting from scratch. Using the highest quality materials with ‘in vogue’ colours such as cashmere, grey and copper, kitchens can be metamorphosed into stunning and contemporary designs. Cupboards, drawer fronts, worktops, taps, loor tiles and appliances can all be exchanged and even moved to create bespoke kitchens to suit individual tastes and preferences. Quartz overlays are very much sought after nowadays, proving to be a very practical and money saving option. “The kitchen is probably the most important room in the whole house” said Jerry. “At Dream Doors we can install a fresh new kitchen within 48 hours,
replacing the doors and worksurfaces for a fraction of the cost of a full re- it. Kitchen makeovers are popular all over the UK and I’m delighted to say that our modern and welcoming Armthorpe showroom has become a lagship one for the Dream Doors franchise. A ‘Checkatrade’ rating of 9.81 from 32 reviews certainly reinforces our high standing”. Jerry and Abi pride themselves on offering the highest professional standards of personal service. Abi runs the showroom and undertakes the initial customer consultation, whilst Jerry project manages every job from home visit and original design to inal installation. They also bene it from having the back up and support of a national organisation, which knows the industry inside out. “The interest in kitchen makeovers shows no sign of
abating” said Abi. “People want lovely kitchens they can be proud of, but do not want the cost and hassle of a full re- it. We offer a wide range of styles, as well as many appliances and white goods, so are able to offer customers a memorable kitchen from a simple door swap, to a full replacement kitchen. Our highly-experienced itting team can cope with any job – however big or small!” As well as kitchen makeovers, Dream Doors can also transform any bedroom to suit individual needs and requirements. Jerry, Emma and Abi are offering 20% off all orders during June 2019* *terms and conditions apply

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club The Peak District was the destination for this months walk with Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club. It was a special occasion as we were celebrating the 80th birthday of one of our long standing members, John Swift. Three walks were organised, a challenging A walk of 12 miles, a shorter B walk of 9 miles and a C walk of around 6 miles. All the walks centred around Monsal Head and Bakewell, and all walkers finished at the Bulls Head, Ashford. At the Bulls Head we surprised John with a small celebration as he has been a key member of our walking club for many years. He has led many walks, been a committee member and in honour of this he has been awarded life time membership. If you would like to join us on our next walk to the Ladybower Reservoir area on 2 June, please search for Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club on Facebook or visit our website www.doncasterpathfinders.org.uk. If you can't make it in June, why not join us on 14 July when we are off to Castleton.

Cliff proves a healthy body can lead to a healthy mind It’s a Mans World at slimming World Having retired to Yorkshire to help with the care of his grandchildren Cliff HammondReed learned that losing weight not only helps him be healthy but helps with mental health too. After losing 2 stone at his local group in just 6 weeks Cliff wanted to share his story so others know that losing weight will help the mind as well as the body. Cliff started Slimming in September 2017. Cliff says “Being a suffer of depression and anxiety my weight does fluctuate depending on my mood but before joining Slimming World I had no control measure and found that
my weight was only going up and up, this acted as part of a vicious cycle making my mood lower every time I got on the scales.” Cliffs medical condition meant that he was on antidepressant medication as well as sleeping tablets to help him sleep, in addition he did little exercise, no housework and struggled to interact with people. His GP felt his weight was directly related to his mental health and that reducing weight through better diet and exercising would improve his mood and physical wellbeing.

Having low mood & no self-confidence it took Cliff a while to wrestle with the idea of attending a Slimming World group but his very supportive daughter suggested they attend together and the rest is history as they say. Cliff says “From the moment I walked through the doors I felt I was among friends and as a result lost 5½lbs in my first week and 4½ in my second week, I’d swapped my foods from eating fast food, such as fish & chips & KFC, as well as snacking on chocolate and sweets. I now eat meals like cooked breakfasts, roast dinner chilli’s, curries and I’m loving it! My Slimming World Consultant couldn’t have been more helpful”. The Consultant keeps the group on track with oodles of support as well as feeding new ideas around Image Therapy and Cliff believes it wouldn’t have been so easy without the Consultant recognising when he’d been in a low mood and needed help to keep on track. “I have been at target for a while now but without the support of my group I know I’d just slip back again to my old habits” Losing his excess weight has made a huge difference to Cliffs life now being physically fit, more willing to interact with people due to a higher level of confidence and also his mood is more manageable without medication. He has reduced antidepressant medication by 75% and no longer relies on sleeping tablets to get a good night sleep. He says he feels more in control of his life focusing his spare time on eating healthily using the Slimming World Extra Easy Plan and Image Therapy. “My health has improved, I’ve reduced medication, improved my exercise regime and I’ve found a way to live life and stay in control too! Slimming World’s Extra Easy plan means I never feel hungry or deprived. I love to cook and have found ways to still enjoy all of my favourite meals just cooked differently. It’s so easy and I can still eat Lasagne, Chilli as well as enjoying a full English breakfast with all the trimmings, oh and the odd G&T. I really couldn’t believe I could eat so much and still lose weight. Slimming World Image Therapy has led to me taking up yoga, walking, cycling, swimming and of course the proverbial gym!” Cliff has trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s leading slimming club, and is delighted to be relaunching a group in Sprotbrough as a new Consultant on Thursday 20th June. “Losing weight and gaining control has made such a difference to my life, I feel so much more confident and am looking forward to sharing my journey and supporting my members to achieve their own weight loss dreams. I’m living my dream thanks to Slimming World”.
For more information or to join Cliff’s group either pop along to the Sprotbrough Community Library on a Thursday (3:00pm, 5:00pm or 7:00pm) or call him on 07821 158191

We are so grateful to everyone who has already made a donation to this very worthwhile cause. If you are planning to hold a fundraising event or joining in an organised event on our behalf please do get in touch with us. We can provide you with leaflets, sponsor forms, T-shirts and include your photo taken at the event on our website. Do come along - this is always a popular event and there is something for all ages. We are still collecting scarves, jewellery and other items for tombola/raffles. We do try and collect wherever possible, but alternatively you can drop them off at our office in Wood Street which is where some of the buses now stop.
