Welcome

to the June issue of The Sprotbrough Arrow.

It feels so good to be back and we are very sorry we missed the May issue of the Arrow. April was printed and ready to go, then lockdown started so we decided against distribution. We felt it was the right thing to do to protect our delivery staff and readers when there were still many unknowns about Covid 19. We have given careful consideration to when would be the right time to produce a new issue and taken advice from public health, local government, Royal Mail and others within this sector. You will find Sprotbrough and Cusworth Parish Council Newsletter is delivered with this June issue, This should have been delivered in April so please be mindful of dates. I hope this issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow brings you happiness and joy. I asked for photos of your VE celebrations and any lovely stories you wanted to share and you didn’t disappoint. Thank you! I am sure you will have been moved by the generosity of our community, it’s spirit, good humour and positivity. At such a bleak time, there is so much to be thankful for. I am humbled by the commitment and motivation of our NHS staff who are working with this virus daily and carers who are living with it in their care homes. I sincerely hope we never forget your bravery. We have an article written by a local Nurse to help give you an insight into their daily life at work. To the army of support that has kept us all going, our local shop keepers, I don’t know how we could manage without you and hope we continue to repay your hard work and effort in the future by shopping local. Our police, Fire Service, bus drivers, shop workers, DMBC staff, teachers, Ward councillors and of course, everyone

within the community, including the church, who has volunteered their help and support to those in need and looked after their neighbours. From everyone at The Arrow and our sponsors, Thank you. Our next challenge after lockdown is how we learn to live with the threat of this virus. We still need to work, be educated, exercise, care, pray and socialise. It is right to think about how we spend our money and the benefit in doing so. There are many small businesses who may not survive and this is devastating for them and their families, but for our community also. Please, shop local wherever you can. I have spoken with each advertiser in this month’s issue whose main priority is the safety of their customers and themselves. Social distancing is paramount to reducing transmission as well as regular handwashing. We all have a responsibility to beat this virus and this is the only way we can help until our scientists find a treatment or vaccine. So, until we are safe, this community will continue to do what it does best, support one another, look after our most vulnerable and be mindful of how we can reduce the chances of transmission. The deadline for the July issue is Wednesday 17th June. The July issue will be distributed the weekend beginning 26th June. Keep safe everyone.

Community News Lynsey has also taken some to her local surgery, supermarket and pharmacy and is determined to keep her oven going flat out for as long as she can. “My reward comes from the comments and photos I’m receiving on line from key workers enjoying some of my baking with a cuppa in these difficult times. It makes it all worthwhile”, she said Leana Gater, RDasH Health Visitor, said: “The cakes are going down so well! On behalf of my colleagues who have received a cake, ‘thank you’ Lynsey. “

If you would like to donate supplies to help Lynsey’s baking bonanza, please contact her on facebook at Lynsey Chambers or Parti Animals. A former Doncaster nurse turned cake-maker is baking on an industrial scale to ensure former NHS colleagues and other key workers can enjoy a treat during their shift.

Ian Carpenter Communications Team Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust

Since the lockdown, Lynsey Chambers, 43, from Sprotbrough, has now sent more than 6400 portions of home-made cake and buns to the front line, keeping her kitchen production line running six days a week to meet demand. Lynsey, who worked as an operating department practitioner at Doncaster’s Women’s Hospital before leaving to start a family and catering business - Parti Animals - 13 years ago, said: “On a typical day I’ll make 48 cupcakes, a double batch of brownies and a couple of lemon drizzle cakes, which are then portioned up in single use packaging. “I started out using ingredients I had in stock but found some of them hard to replace, but since I posted what I’m doing on facebook I’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of local residents and other people who have donated flour, eggs, cocoa powder and other items to keep me going.” The cakes are collected by Jerry Day, who works in infection control at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI), where they are distributed to staff there and at Montagu, Bassetlaw and Tickhill Road hospitals. Tickhill Road Hospital is run by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH). The pair have been dubbed ‘Jerry and the Cakemaker’.

Heart felt Thank you We would like to say a massive thank you for the support we've had from this lovely community. We are the couple living on the narrowboat opposite the Boat Inn and we've had so many offers to help with fetching shopping and folks asking what we need - and lots of waves and smiles from across the water! I can't tell you what a difference it's made, particularly after all that made up nonsense about us partying which appeared in the press a while back! Thank you lovely Sprotbrough, when we are allowed to move on, it will be with very happy memories of your kind welcome in these strange times! Kate and Ian xx

Covid-19

A day in the life of a nurse in Doncaster A day in the life of a nurse? No two days or nights are the same and therefore it is difficult to say what a typical day or night would be. As a nurse we have tasks that are part of our typical shift but every shift has the potential to be exhilarating, exhausting, momentous and heart-warming (to name just a few). I have been nursing for over 20 years and can honestly say it is a vocation, and that I have loved every role I have had the privilege to do. Not one day have I wished I did something else, as each day is different and I am always developing and learning something new. There have been ups and downs on my journey, but all have made me the nurse I am today. At the beginning of 2020, we were planning events to celebrate ‘International Year of the Nurse’. At no point did we expect to be in the midst of a global pandemic, Covid-19. My colleagues and I have been challenged by these unprecedented times, doing new roles, working in new ways and coping with being redeployed to new teams and departments. I have been redeployed to a ward caring for Covid-19 positive patients. I am proud to be a nurse and able to care for patients when they are at their most vulnerable and sickest, but also support and reassure when they are frightened of this unknown (new) virus. As a nurse I reassure patients, but I am also a parent, so have my own worries and anxieties about what we are going through locally, nationally and internationally. I push these anxieties to the back of my mind to ensure I can focus on giving the best care to my patients. On arrival to the ward for my shift, it is time to don (put on) the personal protective equipment (PPE). The PPE consists of a gown over your scrubs, a hat, a mask, goggles and gloves. The PPE is vital to prevent cross-contamination, but difficult to wear. You have breaks, but wearing the PPE for a 12.5 hour shift is not easy as it is hot, uncomfortable and drying (you are not able to drink until all PPE is removed and hands washed

6

they cannot see nursing staff’s faces. They can’t see that reassuring smile behind the mask, and everyone looks the same. No-one is identifiable in the PPE. Once on the ward, the shift starts with handover (from the previous shift) before commencement of nursing tasks. These tasks include assisting with patient hygiene needs, medication rounds, doctor ward rounds, and checking patients vital signs (again, just to name a few). All the time we are monitoring patients to assess for any improvement or deterioration in condition and act on the assessments. An important role is to offer reassurance to patients to relieve their fears and anxieties, and also speaking with family members on the telephone to update and reassure them, with the current visiting restrictions in place due to Covid-19. I am the nurse I am because of the colleagues I have had the privilege to work with, but also because of the patients I have had the privilege to care for. The Covid-19 pandemic was not predicted, and is tough, but all members of the NHS have stepped up and we will beat this virus together! Stay safe and well. Nicola Severein-Kirk.

My Dad, Shaun Perry, is a professional singer who travels the country performing on cruise ships, high end golf resorts and has spent many years touring along side the well known cornish comedian Jethro. When we went into lockdown, my Dad wanted to help in any way he could so decided to sing on the street and live stream his performances on Facebook, originally to lift the spirits of the community. After his first performance, he had over 6000 views, so we decided to do this on a weekly basis and try to raise money for our NHS. If each person who watched just donated ÂŁ1 we could have made over ÂŁ10,000. We have raised over ÂŁ700 so far. It would be great if you could help, please find the links below to one of his performances as well as the just giving page for anyone who would like to donate. Many thanks, Natalie Bell facebook.com/groups/1379310128825912 www.justgiving.com/fundraising/natalie-bell2020

Well Covid 19 certainly changed what ever plans we had to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of VE day. But wow, we still celebrated and came together as a (Socially distanced) community and demonstrated our love for our neighbours, our elderly and our country. There wasn’t a street without bunting, most of which was handmade, posters of tommy in our windows, music, quizzes, street bingo, afternoon tea, singing and lots and lots of fun and laughs. We made sure our children will remember this special day as we remember street parties gone by. Another memory of this time will be that of Captain Tom, or soon to be Captain Sir Thomas Moore! Boris Johnson nominated Captain Tom for a knighthood for his services to the NHS. Captain Tom’s fundraising efforts raised over 32million pounds, 20 million has already been divided between many trusts throughout the country. Some of the money has been used to set up well being areas in hospitals for staff to provide a safe area to release emotions after traumatic experiences. Electronic devices have been purchased to allow patients some contact with their loved ones whilst in isolation. In the long run, it is expected that the money will be used in planning for patients to leave hospital quicker and safer than before as well as mental health support for staff. This amazing gentleman set out to walk 100 laps of his garden as a thank you to the NHS, no one could have ever predicted our nations response. Such an inspiration and as Boris Johnson said, he provided a beacon of light through the fog of coronavirus. We have here some photographs that you have sent me of your VE day celebrations and bunting. Congratulations to everyone who took part, it brightened up this difficult time and demonstrates the love and thanks we have in our villages for our key workers everywhere.

Here are some photos from our garden when our street, Kelso Drive in Warmsworth celebrated VE Day. It was the best community spirit I’ve ever seen and cheered people up so much. We all brought our table and chairs in front of our drives onto the street socially distancing but still being able to talk. It was lovely for the older people on the street who don’t get out because of the pandemic. There was a lot of laughter and also tears. Warmsworth resident.

School News from Copley Junior School We send everyone our best wishes in these challenging times. Copley Junior has remained open to provide childcare to enable parents who are key workers to continue with their essential roles. We have provided online distancing learning materials to pupils through our app and we have been incredibly proud of the support from parents and how our children have responded to this – we have received well over 8000 posts of work so far! We are able to see and comment on all the children’s wonderful work – we really are so impressed. We have also had a focus on being kind, being grateful to our key workers and celebrating all the new skills children have been developing during this time. New Skills

The children have developed so many new skills during the period of school closure – gardening, cooking and DIY to name just a few! Rainbow Pictures Children at home and at our child care group created rainbow pictures to cheer us all up. Many pictures were displayed in the windows of our homes so the pictures could cheer up passersby. Acts of Kindness We celebrated small acts of kindness – well done everyone!

DANUM PROBUS CLUB - danum probus.co.uk

Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Because of the Covid19 lockdown we are not able to meet at present. In normal times Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At this meeting we have a speaker whose subjects cover a wide variety of interests, the programme can be found on our website, www.danumprobus.co.uk. Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the annual holiday which is usually in early June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Section play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. Because of the lockdown we have no plans to have Monday meetings at the golf club before September, and any restart will depend on the prevailing government advice. We will not be running any if our internal crown green bowling competitions this season because we will not have time to finish them. We are hoping to get on the greens at Armthorpe later in the year for social bowling. When we restart, we invite any men who would like to come to these meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, to call either Des Parks (01302 856188), George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table. Information on when we will restart will be published in this magazine and also on the website (danumprobus.co.uk).
