Welcome to the June issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow So far, so good! Things are looking up for us all to finally get back to something which resembles normality. It has been so nice to be able to sit inside a restaurant or enjoy a glass of wine with friends without worrying about how many layers you need. It’s great to see our fitness classes and gyms reopening and people getting back into a routine. Still got my fingers crossed we will be safe to reopen as usual from 21st June. Best of luck to all of our local pubs, cafes, wine bars and restaurants! So pleased to see the scarecrow festival is back on for 2021! Can’t wait to see the fantastic creations in your gardens soon, The deadline for the July issue is Wednesday 16th June. The July issue will be distributed the last weekend in June.

Doncaster Rambler’s
A local walk from New Rossington
Doncaster Ramblers have climbed this hill in Rosso many times, and reaching the summit with boots blackened by slag, then confronted by a featureless moonscape, decided this time to take the longer route around the base. Although adding ¾ mile and 30 minutes to the journey the detour allowed us to examine where volunteers, including one of our keen Rambler members, planted trees on this former colliery spoil heap. Ten of us set out at just after 10 on a dull spring day, full of summer spirit, towards the burial ground east of New Rossington. Having agreed not to make the arduous climb, we took a short cut to avoid the boggy ground behind the burial ground eventually reaching the familiar bridge over the Torne. Continuing along Carr Bank with the Iport buildings to the right we turned left along Egg Lane then along a recently mowed path to reach Wellington Lane and on to Billy Wright ‘s Lane. Although walking on metalised roads, it felt like countryside being out here, not more so than when crossing fields near Stancil and being accosted by a herd of calves, whose nosy antics were comical enough sniffing our rucksacks and searching our pockets for foods to start with but finding none became more aggressive and pushed us physically out of their field.

Saved by a style we pushed on, on a welltrodden path, first north east, passing newly concreted water holes, then north back into New Rossington via the diameter Central Drive and back to the start. Virtual hugs all round and a promise to meet next time Doncaster Ramblers Rules continue to change regarding outdoor exercise and group activity so please visit our website https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/ for latest, including future activity. Also follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ doncasterramblers/ for details of past Rambler outings. Remember while out observe social distancing, carry a mask, hand sanitiser, and gloves. Obey the Countryside Code and give way to other walkers.

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School This half term the staff in Nursery have planned an unforgettable opportunity for children to watch caterpillars grow, change into chrysalides and emerge as beautiful Painted Lady Butterflies. They have been observing closely the changes in the caterpillars and the process of metamorphosis with wonder and excitement. We hope to show you more photographs once the butterflies have emerged from their slumber! Year 1 have been exploring our extensive grounds here at Orchard and looking at plants that are currently growing. They can already name a variety of common wild plants including evergreen and deciduous trees and are now looking to more specific vegetable plants. After discussions about different vegetables and experiences children already have about growing, they decided to pot tomato, cucumber, lettuce, peppers and peas. They talked about what seeds need to be able to grow and learnt the word ‘germination’. They also learnt that the first seedling leaves are called ‘cotyledon’ leaves (every day is a school day!). Some of the scientists of the year group were even able to talk about photosynthesis! The plants were re-potted into bigger pots to avoid them getting root bound and now they’re measuring the plants every two days to see how quickly they grow. The potato crop in Year 2 is really starting to take shape as the grow bags are overflowing with green leaves. Children have been meticulous in their care for their plants, remembering to water them and bring them indoors during the cold, frosty nights (which we’ve probably had more than our fair share of for May!) We have continued our science learning by looking at which insects live in and around our potato plant and assess whether they are helpful to the growth or a pest. Fingers crossed their efforts will be rewarded when we come to harvest them later in the term.

In an effort to spread hope and lift spirits during these uncertain times, Year 2 are looking to plant sunflowers over the coming days as part of the Seeds of Hope project. We will be planting seeds in individual pots and observing them grow into dwarf sunflowers between six to fourteen inches tall. Keep checking to see the progress of all our green fingered efforts in the coming months! Sarah Belk from Active Fusion and our two sports apprentices have continued their wonderful work with children specifically on agility and ball control this half term. Children have been massively engaged in team games and have learnt new concepts such as aiming and interception. Years 1 and 2 have also been enjoying the opportunity to engage with multi skills after school club with Callum. We know how important sport and physical activity is for health and wellbeing and children continue to really enjoy and thrive at these opportunities. Thank you to our extended team for their continued support. We will have more news in next month’s issue of the Arrow.

School News from Copley Junior School Year 4 ‘Mountain Explorer’ Academy To launch their geography project on mountains, Year 4 entered the Mountain Explorer Academy on Monday for an action packed day of learning and activities. Delivered by an experienced mountaineer and expedition leader, the workshop was a mixture of short, interactive presentations (full of photos, videos and stories from recent mountaineering expeditions) and hands-on activities in small teams (e.g. mapping exercises, mountain-themed problem solving challenges, a quiz on the hazards of mountain travel, a wildlife identification competition etc). What a fantastic day of learning and exploration!
Spelling Bee Preparation
Children have been very practising their spellings in preparation for Copley Junior’s annual Spelling Bee.

We have seen so many children who have made fantastic progress and soon we will be announcing the most improved spellers of the year. Finalists from each class have been selected for our Grand Final in a few weeks, so keep practising everyone! Celebrating Earth Day To celebrate Earth Day, Year 3 learned about carbon footprints and considered the small changes we can make to help to reduce pollution and protect our planet. Using word play and thoughtful illustrations, Year 5 created Earth Day posters to make us realise that we need to save our planet before it is too late! We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best Wishes E.A. Crayton Head teacher

You asked us for ways to help you improve relaxation and mindfulness. So, we wanted to share a wonderful Sound Healing session with you.
How does Sound Healing work? Each organism has its own vibratory rate. Every object in the universe has its unique resonant frequency. Tap a wineglass, and it will emit a ringing sound determined by its size, shape and thickness. When an opera singer vibrates a glass with her voice, the singer has matched her voice to the glass's resonant frequency and set it into vibration. As the singer increases the volume, the resonance becomes too great for the forces that hold the glass together, and it shatters. Luckily, our bodies are more flexible than glass! The cells of our body enjoy the vibration of sound. Julian, our tutor, will give an introductory talk and demonstration of the healing power of Tibetan and Crystal Singing Bowls. All ages and abilities are welcome.

Richmond Hill Academy
Let’s Think in English Richmond Hill’s taster session for Let’s Think in English was a resounding success. Our children and staff demonstrated just why we have been selected as the northern training hub. Evident were quality discussions, children supportive of one another’s views and teachers skilfully encouraging deeper thinking and understanding. Thanks to the colleagues from other South Yorkshire schools who joined us and provided such excellent feedback. We are looking forward to our first cohort training with us from September. Scavenger Hunt Year 4 have been enjoying a scavenger hunt in the wild area of the school grounds, finding clues and using orienteering skills to problem solve in groups and pairs. Fantastic team work was demonstrated by all. Maths Catch-ups Our maths catch-up classes have got off to a flying start. This half term our children are enjoying the partner work and collaboration they so missed during zoom school. They especially loved this session using counting sticks for counting in multiples.
